They did SO much right! Serious kudos for re-introducing the RJ45 Ethernet port. Serious kudos for the replaceable, non-soldered RAM! One miss though is the soldered wifi card. 9/10. The new Ryzen processors are the closest thing on the market to approaching Apple's power and efficiency with the M1/2/3 processors. I have a P16s AMD that I use as my daily driver and the battery life is amazing with it's 15w 8 core AMD processor.

Is the repairability similar on the P14s? Or is your review limited to the T14?
@anoraker
@anoraker 27 күн бұрын
Based on repair guides I can find online, it appears as though the P14S Gen 5 has similar levels of repairability. The Gen 4 and earlier does not (soldered RAM for instance). support.lenovo.com/us/en/selfrepair/sr500049-thinkpad-p14s-gen-5-amd-21me-21mf-self-repair-guide Hope that helps!

(second comment but idc) The Thinkbook 14 and Thinkpad L series were always more repairable than Every other Thinkpad Glad that Lenovo is finally coming into their senses and ditching soldered ram on T/Ps series Thinkpads for good, but knowing companies, that change is most likely temporary

Repairability looks great, but is the charging port soldered onto the motherboard? Guess have to be extra careful when it's plugged it if it is.

Yes it is, unfortunately. Steps in the right direction, but not everything we'd want just yet.

Even though they worked together with iFixit and finally made RAM replacable again (which I really like!), they still solder down the effing WiFi-module! So, if you don't have WiFi7 from the start, you will never get it! And only on T-, P- and L-series, while E-series, Thinkbooks and ideapads still have M.2-2230-adapters.

It's definitely not perfect, I agree. It's a step in the right direction.

Is this an Intel based one? Would the AMD motherboard also be similar? I would like to upgrade storage and memory with the AMD one as well.
@anoraker

This is the Intel based one! But the AMD one is similar, yes, and should be nearly (if not equally) as repairable.

How about Fan Noise? Disturbing noise?

It's there, but no worse than most modern laptops. If you try to do something really intensive like gaming it'll kick up louder.

Thanks for the video! If I upgrade the ssd myself, I would need to reinstall windows. How would that work with the authorization, would I need to buy a license key or does that transfer automatically?
@anoraker
@anoraker 2 ай бұрын
These days, license keys are tied to motherboards. So as long as you install the same version of Windows (11 Home as memory serves) it should activate without issue.

Honestly a bit lame. My 2018 omen is as repairable and so is the average gaming laptop today. Removable keyboards, non glued display assemblies and upgradable cpus and gpus are what we need. If you get a 1700$ gamong laptop it will be just as chonky, have ethernet and all of the upgradability you see here.
@anoraker
@anoraker 2 ай бұрын
You're comparing gaming laptops to ultrabooks and um... that's kind of pointless? Sure if you spend $500 more you'll get something else. But what does that matter? Not everyone needs or wants a gaming laptop. Not everyone can afford to spend another $500. And most people can't settle for the incredibly poor battery life a gaming laptop affords. So sure, it's good that (some) gaming laptops are more repairable, but that doesn't do much good for most people so it's not all that great. And while I would like to see MORE repairability, I like to celebrate any strides towards repairability we get.
@davitdavid7165

@@anoraker you can easily get a 1700$ gaming laptop which has the same upgradability as this one while also getting a free GPU. This thing looks chilly and heavy for an ultra book anyway. The legion 7i 2024 is a particularly premium laptop, weight less than most in its category, has 2 ram slots lasts 6 hours KZbin as measured by jarrods tech. And it starts at 1699 with a 4060. Also the WiFi is socketed, as are 2 ram and m.2 SSD slots. The 2023 g14 is a 14 inch laptop, it dominated every other gaming laptop in battery life and has 1 ram slot with 16 gigs soldered, socketed WiFi, 1 m.2 slot. The battery in all of these laptops is held by screws. The lack of a cable connector is something I don't think is common nowadays but my 2018 omen 15 from the DC series has it (Google the sr03xl battery to see it). The only company I know which glues batteries is apple and being more upgradable than apple is hardly praiseworthy. The only unique feature here is captive screws, which is not an expensive or particularly meaningful addition. The removable keyboard and display are the 2 features repair shops have been asking for. Lenovo did nothing here. They put sodimm and an ethernet port into a laptop, an ifixit sticker and jacked up the price. I think framework laptops are overpriced for what they are but at least those have magnetic bezzels, removable keyboards and interesting io. This laptop should be 1200 tops to even be worthwhile. Lenovo could have used lpcamm2 memory (which they helped develop and is featured in the more expensive P1 ThinkPad), they could have made the WiFi socketed, they could have used the new AMD CPU, they could have used a more unique form factor and they did nothing. I would suggest getting a 1000-1200 dollar laptop, configuring it with as much ram as the manufacturer allows, putting a 2tb SSD in it and pairing it with a 50 dollar ethernet dongle. You can 3d print a xhonky chassis for nostalgia with the money you saved. Alternatively get a slimmer gaming laptop with a particularly large battery and at least 1 sodimm slot.

@@anoraker I still don't like it. It is overpriced for what it is and you praising the nonglued battery (only apple does that) and ignoring the soldered WiFi (which is very rare) gives me little hope.

I missheard that you said this thing costs 1700dollars. Now that i checked it is not a bad deal. There are 1200 dollar gamomg laptops around but most of them are bad, you could get a food model used or refurbished at that price instead@@anoraker

@@davitdavid7165 ... in ultrabooks, soldered WIFI is common. As is soldered RAM, storage, and the completely inability to replace displays. Again, compare apples to apples [and not Apple). This is a good step forward (or backward, considering it gets there by embracing older more repairable design).

maybe thats just me but i i find lenovos current lineup ugly. and i dont mean the "boxy" thing with the thinkpad range, actually liking that because there is a lot of benefits connected with that (better cooling, better keyboard etc.) but: the silver logo badge on the side, thinpad logo 45° in the corner, the camera ridge ... all of them scream "unnecessary" and "not designed to work with each other". putting ugly ogos and badges on something is really the most clumsy attempt to make something unique.

You're not... wrong... technically. Lenovo's ThinkPad is a very "I can take this to work and not have the manager judge me" look... and there's a place for that.
