Satch is going out with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony this year and they'll be paying tribute to the Mighty Van Halen!

"Summer Song" was my introduction to Joe, decades ago. Been loving it ever since. When "Surfing with the Alien" came out, there was no turning back. One of the greats.

I first heard this song on WXRT in Chicago about 30 years ago. Even now, as I listen to this absolute GEM, I close my eyes at the beginning and I feel like I am literally FLYING through an intensely blue sky as the clouds zoom by below..... poetic beautiful stunning ..... I enjoyed your reaction ✌️🙏

You're right - Satriani can be *very* lyrical with his lead playing. He can also shred your face off with crazy mixed-modal virtuosity! LOL There's a reason his students included Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Andy Timmons etc etc. Having bought this CD around '91 (yes, I was a couple of years late to the party, but hey, I was a teenager with limited funds!), I *still* listen thru this album regularly - it's well worth setting aside an hour of zero interruptions & letting it wash over you. ;)

Listen to all of Surfing with the Alien! Satch will always be my #1. Saw him the first time on the Blue Dream tour back in 1990. Next was the first G3 tour with Vai and Johnson. Can't wait to see him with Sammy and Mike in August. Will be surreal hearing Satch play VH tunes.

I saw Satriani live in New Orleans about 20 years ago and he was incredible. Ever song played note for note perfect and so loud it made my bones ache . He had another awesome player open for him, Chris Duarte. Check him out too.

Joe and Eddie were contemporaries. They were both working and coming into public recognition at the same time, late 70s early 80s. A few months ago I saw Joe (again) on tour with his buddy Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, during their latest G3 tour. It was a great performance, and Joe has always been a class act. The G3 tour has been going on for about 30 years or so, and is put together by Joe and Steve Vai. Every tour they get some other high profile guitarist to tour with them. Over the years they've tried to get Eddie to tour, but for whatever reason(s) he never did it. Likely because of his health and addiction issues, and issues with the band, etc. But that would have been great, to see all three of them at the same time.

I got into Joe Satriani basically right after getting a guitar for my birthday in 93 ...and Joe's long ago student who you heard on Yankee Rose, Steve Vai (check his piece "Tender Surrender," it's sinful what he does to a guitar). The way you fret and pluck *definitely makes it talk different. Man I'm a fan of seeing instrumentals pop up in reactions and get some love, it's what I'm making right now with a focus on 1970s/80s prog rock type of stuff.

Good song for first listen. Not a solo, just an instrumental. But, what's interesting is that he does sing with the guitar. There are verses, choruses and a solo section. Ppl always talked about his drum "loop" but he has been setting ppl straight for 35 years. He had a studio drummer and he's played with different drummers on tour. Next Joe recommendation? "Surfing With the Alien"

Joe Satriani had a band called the Squares in the 80's and only recently released their recordings... While Eddie Van Halen was famous and playing arenas in America w/ Van Halen, Joe Satriani was struggling to pay bills and taught guitar to earn extra ca$h... but some of his students became more famous than he did... including Kirk Hammett of Metallica... Steve Vai ... etc. Unable to find any labels for the Squares, Joe Satriani made an instrumental record showcasing his guitar playing in 1986 which he sold out of the trunk of his car... the album 'Not of this Earth'... He even wrote a track named 'Rubina' for his wife Rubina Satriani (They r still married) The record sold decently (it was re-released in 1988) and got the guitarist signed and Joe Satriani would defy all expectations w/ his 1987 release 'Surfing with the Alien'... a guitar instrumental album recorded for only $13K on which he played guitar, bass and keyboards... the album cover featured Marvel Comics superhero The Silver Surfer... 'Surfing with the Alien' sold gold... then platinum (1 million copies) in the US and is one of the biggest guitar instrumental records of all time w/ tracks like - 'Surfing with the Alien'... 'Circles' ... 'Always with you, always with me'... 'Satch boogie'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 After the re-release of 'Not of this Earth' in 1988... the next album 'Flying in a blue dream' in 1989 was another success, selling gold (half million copies) in the US and charting at #23... We even got to hear Joe Satriani sing on the track "I believe"... His 1992 album 'The Extremist' also sold gold w/ standout instrumental tracks like - 'Summer song' ... "Cryin'"... 'Friends'... 'Time machine' was his 5th album in 1993, comprised of 2 CD's - an album of studio tracks... and a live record of his best performances. His 1995 self-titled album was rather jazzy and delivered subtle tunes like 'Cool #9' ... 'Moroccan sunset'... It was around this time Joe Satriani noticed that his hairline was receding and made the expected image change by shaving his head bald... he also launched the 1st of his guitar-oriented tours w/ guitarist Steve Vai, called 'G3' in 1996... he released a live record from the tour - "G3: Live in concert" in 1997 feat. himself, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. Since then, Joe Satriani has released a string of instrumental records... some experimental albums... other the traditional guitar rock instrumentals... and has toured consistently over time. He's currently on his 18th studio album 'The Elephants of Mars'... His tours w/ friend & former student Steve Vai have also been in huge demand. His connection w/ Van Halen also began when he formed the band Chickenfoot w/ former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony (w/ drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers)... and released 2 albums - 'Chickenfoot' (2009) and 'Chickenfoot III' (2011) ... as well as live records. In 2024, Joe Satriani signed on to play Eddie Van Halen's guitar parts on a Sammy Hagar summer tour which will include Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham on drums (the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham)

I went to the Satch/Vai tour on 4/20....he played this song. All of the songs he played sounded EXACTLY like the album version. It was pretty amazing! This entire album is amazing. If you haven't listened to Steve Vai yet, you should. You should react to Vai's album version, not the live stuff unless it's "Live In Astoria", which is the best "live" version of his music.

You should listen to Satriani's 'Satch Boogie', 'Circles' and 'Surfing with the Alien' all from the same album but there's an even earlier live version of him doing 'Hordes of Locusts' that is so powerful and tight that you almost forget it's live. He has so much in his musical library that even these few tunes don't do it justice but are a good place to start. Keep in mind it's all instrumental rock so if you need your music with vocals all the time you may not be as appreciative but these songs rock and are worth a listen.

So, Sammy Hagar, Mike Anthony and Jason Bonham (Son of the late great Zepplin Drummer, John Bohnam) will be teaming up with Joe Satriani on guitar for a Van Halen tribute tour over the summer! Sammy and Mikey also teamed up with Joe previously in a super band called Chickenfoot that you should check out.

You mentioned Eddie Van Halen , Joe is one of the few guitarist who can use two handed tapping and NOT sound like a Van Halen clone. Check out The Headless Horseman & The Forgotten Part 1 by Joe as examples.

Yes, sadly that is a drum machine… Recommend you watch Joe live with Stu Hamm (bass) and Jeff Campitelli (drums). 3 songs off the top of my head are Satch Boogie, Surfing with the alien and Ice 9… Probably my 3rd favourite all time after EVH and Jimi, but I’m sure people will have their own opinions which is fine by me ✌🏽
