I have a giant Tom cat that has been displaced-“Big Red”- after more than six years under a neighbor’s house. He isn’t all the way feral, but now he comes for food twice a day and it’s getting cold so thanks for the video! I have a wooden cat litter box so I was trying to figure out how to glue the reflectix to the wood but I like your idea much better. Big Red had it made for a long stretch- keeping the mice and rat population down a couple houses down where a person raised rabbits but property sold and no more rabbit food- no more rats- which is good. I hope The Cat will accept the lodging. You make it look easy- I’m pretty sure mine won’t come close but I’ll do my best. Thanks again.

I'm building 2 houses right now, it's getting very cold in ID, and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping all those beautiful creatures so they can have a better winter. I just want to mention that I am adding 2 doors in each "winter house" for the safety of the cats or the animal that's gonna use the "winter house" since this ones are gonna be in a area of my property where i can't keep my eyes on it at night. Hi, @bigcatloverelys6405. Mine are on my back porch and under my deck with 24/7 camera monitoring but I think you have a good plan if placing them where larger animals aren't afraid to approach the shelter. The conflict between having a warmer animal vs a safer animal is always a difficult decision. Safer is probably the better option. One thing I like about these shelters with an awning is it not only shields from snow and rain but makes it harder for larger predators to get in the shelter. Thank you for helping the animals stay warmer.

I hope you put flaps over the doors to keep the wind from blowing through, otherwise it won't be very warm.

Thank you so much for making this!! I just made my first cat shelter. For the inside container I chose to use a 48 can styrofoam cooler and put down 2 layers of mylar on the bottom of it for extra warmth. I absolutely loved your idea of how to make a little awning with a hair dryer along with the swinging door. I didn't have any fancy sanders on hand, but a 100/180 grit nail file worked just fine to soften the edges of the entry. I'm so proud of how mine turned out! Hope my little feral I feed uses it 💜

I started feeding the feral cats that moved onto my property, but 2 in particular have gotten pretty close, staying on my open front porch. I got an old cooler and laid it on a chair they had been laying on with the door propped up onto the arm of the 2nd chair with another large closed cooler between them that I put the food on. I put the chair cushion inside the cooler. I put a blanket over. It isn't completely covered since I didn't know if they'd know it was there or go inside? After a few days, today, I saw both go inside. I will see how they react to covering more or all the way with a flap or part of a blanket. Still a work in progress. I just thought this might be a quick & easy solution for someone else.😊🐆🐆

Thank you for your reply to my question. I read of few of the comments below and see that you haven’t had success yet getting your ferals to use the houses. One possible issue is the size of the door and the fact there there is a flap. It’s great for heat insulation but may discourage cats from using it because they don’t want to feel trapped or vulnerable to predators. I had a cat house that I used last year, and as soon as I attached the clear plastic strip flaps in the door opening, the cat refused to use it. Just a thought for you to consider. Thank you again!
@FixitforgetitАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind suggestion. I have another video on my channel where I took one of these shelters and added a second door for an exit. I then cut the flaps in half so it is very small. I also took a bungee cord and raised the flap way up on another shelter. I have seen evidence that our favorite feral has gotten into the shelter with the small flaps and exit door. One reason she may not be using these shelters is she is spoiled. I gave her three manufactured shelters with a heating pad in each one of them. She loves them.
@pachecodecastro2593 Жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t a second door be important for safety and ventilation? Thank you very much for your beautiful work.
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, Pacheco de Castro. Thank you for your kind comment and suggestion. I have made shelters with two doors before. This is especially important in areas with predators. These shelters are right next to our house and we have cameras monitoring them all the time. We have lived here for 30 years and have never had any large predators like a coyote anywhere near our house. When I made these shelters I weighed the safety concerns with the need for the critter to stay warm. To a certain extent, a shelter with 2 doors is a bit of a wind tunnel. It is really difficult for a cat or possum to retain their body heat when there are 2 doors. It really gets cold where we live. Since predators don't come around our home and the shelters are mostly used by possums we opted for one door to try to help them stay warm. The awning also helps keep larger animals from entering the shelter.

If you are talking about insulating between the inner and outer boxes I think there would be enough room for that. There probably won't be enough room to insulate between the top of the inner and outer boxes. I only had enough room for a thin covering of straw on the top.

What about putting 1” of sand at the bottom… for weight, to help it not blow away?
@Fixitforgetit11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your idea, Janette. I haven't had any trouble with them blowing away. They are fairly heavy with the two tubs and straw. I would ba a bit concerned about putting sand in them as the cats may think of them as a litter box. Thanks for stopping by.

I built one of these very similar shelter for a female cat who had kittens but a raccoon got in and attacked the babies. how do i prevent attacks from other animals?
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
That's so sad. Thank you for trying to help the ferals. This is a difficult choice. If you only have one door the shelter is warmer but less safe. If you have two doors the shelter is safer but a colder virtual wind tunnel. Our shelters are close to our house so we went with one door. This is a difficult choice to make and worth a lot of consideration before making a decision about which style of shelter to make.

Hi there, thank you very much for this video, and thank you for caring about feral and stray cats! I purchased a cat house similar to the one you linked from Amazon. The walls are made of a layer of wood, a layer of plywood and, for the interior walls, there is an insulated sponge liner insert included. But there is an insulation gap around theinterior top of the shelter (the roof lifts off) that could let a lot of cold in. We live in northern VT so it gets very cold, and I’m worried about this. Any suggestions? I’m thinking about adding an additional layer of the reflective material that you used in your cat house to the entire interior for extra warmth, and maybe even a layer of some type of insulation board beneath that. maybe I could just cut that same insulation board to fit the gaps around the edge of the roof. Thanks for reading!

Is there an alternative to straw? I'm deadly allergic.
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, LeahStormGaming. Straw is an excellent bedding choice for feral shelters because it has a nice insulating factor, won't mold as easily as hey, and tends to stay nice and dry. Since you are allergic you may want to have a family member or friend pack the shelter with straw so you aren't exposed to it. If that isn't an option some have suggested using shredded paper or cardboard as bedding. The downside is it is much more likely to get wet and freeze than straw and if that happens the feral cat will stop using the shelter. Good luck and thanks for helping these sweet critters.

Thank you for your kind comment, @autumn_b905. I made 4 total shelters because we have at least 3 ferals still in our neighborhood. We have adopted 3 as well. What's strange is the ferals have peeked inside a few times but never took up residence in any of them. We have actually had a couple raccoons go inside a couple shelters a couple of times but they never stayed in them. They just seemed curious. I was shocked that they could fit in there. The possums are our main takers. They love these shelters and since the ferals haven't shown an interest we just let the possums enjoy themselves. Thank you for helping the essence of innocence.

Should there be 2 entrance to the shelter?

If they were out in the woods they probably should. These are on our porch and are quite safe. The awning also makes it hard for larger animals to try to get in the shelter. Thanks for your suggestion.

@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, Constance. I made these for feral cats. Unfortunately, the possums took them over. I have only seen a raccoon briefly go in one a couple times. The possums live in them throughout the winter. I wish the possums didn't go in them so they would be available for ferals but I can't control which critter decides to use them. Thanks for stopping by.

Great project , do they not need a little more ventilation?
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your concern, @leonienolan511. These are very well-ventilated. The door lets air in and the top pushes up a bit due to the upward pressure from the straw. That creates a small air gap around the lid. The possums absolutely love these shelters. They are in and out of them throughout the day. They gather dry leaves and straw in little bundles and carry them in their tails to the shelter to make it their own. They are fun to watch knowing they are so much warmer with these shelters.

Love this DIY home! Hi fellow animal lovers! We recently purchased the Frisco Outdoor Wooden Cat House with Retractable Roof, by Chewys. Im feeding 4 feral cats as I await our local TNR group, and ordered 4. It is elevated and has a sloped roof with one entrance. Our yard has been bisected by a chain link fence - my husband is a carpenter. Im going to add straw and have a few ideas for insulation. Because I rescue large breed doggies, there's really no huge chance that any preditors will venture thru - and the cats are fed and will be sheltered in the back half of the back yard. Does anyone have any suggestions/critiques? Thanks very much!

Hi, Vanessa. Thanks for your kind comment. If your question is about insulation your idea of straw is excellent. Some people will also use styrofoam insulation. You can get sheet styrofoam insulation at Home Depot and cut it to fit. Thank you so much for caring for the ferals and thanks for stopping by.

@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
@@vanessalovesdogs7549 Straw only is the best option for bedding inside the shelter. Any sort of cloth, strips of cloth, towels, etc., will attract moisture from the cat's body, paws, and breath. The moisture in the cloth will then freeze and the feral will stop using the shelter. Straw stays nice and dry. Neighbors of ours put some towels in their shelter and soon after that the ferals stopped using the shelters. When we learned what they did we told them to see if the towels were frozen and they were. After they removed the frozen towels and replaced them with fresh straw the ferals moved back into the shelters. Thanks for caring for the ferals.

@@Fixitforgetitcan a heating pad be used with straw? Thank you for the tip to not add material and how it will freeze. I had no idea
@jenshere2090 Жыл бұрын
@@ms.creepyleeI use the outdoor heating pads from Chewy in some of my feral cat houses. (It’s the one that shows a rabbit sitting on it.). These pads are hard plastic with a chew proof cord. I only use the heating pads in my handmade wooden houses and yes put straw in with the pad too and haven’t had a problem. To entice the cats to use the houses I also sprinkle catnip inside. I have also used the heating pads in the feral houses made out of the large igloo or Coleman coolers but I have not used them in the plastic bin boxes, for those I just use the straw.

What size entrance that will let cats in but keep racoons out?
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, Migrose. I believe the door size on this shelter is 5" wide by 5 1/2" tall. I think the only safe way to handle that concern is to make a shelter with two doors. @@Lillygal55 Thanks, Lilly. I feel so sorry for these precious creatures. They are the essence of innocence. If you need a quick makeshift feral shelter you could do this until you get a more substantial shelter. Get a larger and smaller box about the size of the boxes in my video. Put a bed of straw inside the smaller box and put it in the larger box. Pack straw between the two boxes and cut holes in both boxes for a doorway. Then take a large 55-gallon plastic trash bag and wrap the larger outer box with the bag while using duct tape to secure the plastic bag in place. Try to put the shelter in a place where it is protected from the weather like a carport or covered porch. Then it would be good to get a more solid insulated plastic shelter as soon as possible. We put food out for them and heated water bowls. A little effort and love makes a huge difference in their lives as they struggle to survive and stay warm in the winter. Thank you for caring for these sweet critters.

whyh the straw inside put a nice warm blanket preferabbly a 12 volt heating blanket.
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, Burken Productions. The reason for the straw is that is what All About Animals and other professionals recommend. It is best for dryness, warmth, and insulation. Cloth gets wet and will freeze. My neighbors called me and wanted to know if I had any idea why their ferals stopped using their shelters. I asked if they had cloth towels, blankets, etc., in the shelters. They said they did. I told them to replace it with straw. When they checked the shelters the cloth was wet and frozen. When they replaced it with straw the cats started using the shelters again.

Have you seen cats use it?
@Fixitforgetit Жыл бұрын
Hi, C Mc. That's a great question. Unfortunately, I have not seen a cat use any of the four shelters we have. I have three shelters with one door and one with two doors. Two ferals are hanging around and we feed them daily. Neither of them show any interest in any of the shelters. Only possums are interested in them. They love them. I have a larger shelter I made a few years ago and I modified one of the 3 single-door shelters in this video into a two-door shelter. Unfortunately, that didn't entice them to try the shelter. At least they are there if they ever want to use them.
