Peter helped out Tris and Four because he watched Tris spare his life in one of the simulations.

I like that Peter joins them out of sheer pragmatism. In real life, the idea that you can redeem jerks through being special enough is so pernicious. But sometimes it be like this.
@janedoe86622 ай бұрын
Exactly, he did not want to owe Tris anything, besides at the same time he realised that to Jenine he was just cannon fodder, absolutely dispensable and replaceable, that she was not gonna do anything to benefit him or give anything just to save his life, so he was not in a better place nor position with her than against her

The 1984/Brave New World parallels are clearly there to be seen, same with Hunger Games/The Giver. That was the era when they where aplenty. But if u wanna just see them as entertainment and avoid the deeper meanings, u go for it. Not everyone is the same though, eh?

@@paulcurran4786 I’ve noticed how many people say “turn off your brain and just enjoy it” for a LOT of sociological allegories and commentaries. Like if everything isn’t on the surface (and this one almost is, but I guess not *enough*), it’s dismissed as bad or at best shallow entertainment. Did no one take any literature classes? Lol. Or learn how to analyze any media apart from aesthetics and whatnot? I just find it strange, and a little alarming XD, how many movies and shows that force you to use your brain are FAR more likely to be dismissed as “stupid, mindless entertainment” than ACTUALLY stupid and mindless entertainment. A couple problems viewers seem to have are not understanding that 1) drama isn’t an essay from the writer to you personally. Characters lie. 2) Dialogue is important. And it’s not all exposition. 3) you DON’T need to have everything explained to you. It’s ok to fill in the gaps on your own. But we all have prejudices, so don’t be surprised if some of your expectations and assumptions are overturned. That’s not “bad writing.” Uh ok sorry this isn’t even directly about the video or the OG comment lol. Like it’s fine to watch these as pure entertainment. 😂 I just don’t think they should be limited to that category.

Great reaction! 😊 Fun Fact: The reason for Tris' short hair in this movie was that Shailene Woodley was also filming "The Fault in Our Stars", also with Ansel Elsgort(Caleb), in which she had the shorter hair. It's been awhile since I've read this book, and I don't remember if she had the short hair in the book as well. I love the additions of Octavia Spencer's character Joanna, and of Naomi Watts as Four's mother Evelyn. I do like that we got to see a little more of Kate Winslet as the villian in this movie. And I would've loved to have seen the scenes when Tris was in the sim in the theaters. Miles Tiller's character Peter is still a pain in the butt in this movie. But he does such a great job portraying this character. Miles Tiller is just an outstanding actor in everything he's in. Looking forward to you wrapping up this trilogy with "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" next. And looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

Peter is not a double agent. He only positions himself on the side that best suits him. When he was interested in escaping from Dauntless with Tris and Four, he did so. When Tris and Four were going to escape from Amity on their own, he betrayed them to save himself. And when he realized that his life meant nothing to Jeanine, he changed sides again. Peter is like a weather vane. He goes wherever the wind takes him. Not a really trustly person, isn't he?😅

I really, REALLY hope you still watch Allegiant sometime....this series is completely new to me and I've been keeping up with your reactions as I watch. I didn't like Insurgent nearly as much as the first film, but it had its merits, and I was still interested in the overall story by the end. Imo Allegiant is SO much better than Insurgent, it's exactly the sort of direction I was hoping the series would go after the first film. I'm incredibly impressed how creative some of the concepts in the series turned out to be, considering how derivative it seemed in places at the start. There's some really neat stuff in the last one, I think it will blow your mind, so I hope you watch it.

Thanks for the reaction! I appreciate how you’re going into these movies trying not to get influenced by other people’s opinions. Also, while comparing these franchises (HG, MR, Div) seems like an easy thing to do, I find it diminishes the watching experience. There are a lot of similarities but also every franchise has some original ideas, and they have to be appreciated. What I love about this movie, is like you said in the outro, how the story is based on psychological progression. And while one person rarely makes a big difference, in the long term, by passing on the values you learned in life, IT WILL make a difference in the society. Can’t wait for your reaction to what’s outside the wall!

13:11 ironically, “normal” people are much more likely to act like most of these characters in real life, as opposed to Divergents. The average person fight to fit in and get ahead, not for a greater cause. People are also very good at reinforcing the hierarchy, giving those at the top the benefit of the doubt and dismissing or condemning those who disrupt the status quo. For some reason, people often get the oppressor and oppressed mixed up, no matter how much evidence exists. Good point about Four looking Eric in the eye when he executes him. And I totally agree with you that Eric of course can live with the blood on his hands because he’s a psychopath lol. Nice reaction and reflection at the end. Oh the enneagram! Haha. I’m a 6w5. XD

idk if anyone's said that yet, but as far as i understood it when i first watched these movies, peter never really deserves the role of a "good guy" or "being on the right side". yes, he does save the whole mission in the end, but he didn't do it for kind reasons, he only ever wanted to protect himself. idk if that's actually canon, but in my head that makes the most sense and is the reason why he changed sides a couple of times. whatever side he thought would win at the time was the one he stayed with. which is also the reason he revealed the group's position while they were cornered in amity. he thought there'd be no way out so he switched back to janine's side. i feel like that core motivation fits and explains his character the best, but i might be wrong

It's not just that Triss killed Will, its that she lied about it.
@thecocoacouch6 ай бұрын
Yeah but Triss explained she couldn’t bare to say it since she could barely live with herself and everyone discovering she brings death to everyone she’s close to, she didn’t want to reveal to her that she too could die because of her. The amount of trauma that prevented her from being honest about it all came out in one of the most unhealthy scenarios and her friend didn’t for a second think about that, but rather “that she lied about it” which I was disappointed with.
@juliant6 ай бұрын
@thecocoacouch I'd be more disappointed with the friend who lied to my face about killing a loved one, even though they didn't mean it and have past trauma. For me, it's not really a valid reason to lie. 1. You are prolonging your friends' torment and false hope by not revealing the truth. 2. It exposes that you don't trust me enough to be understanding of the situation you were in. I'm sure I could go on, but those two points are poignant enough. Ps. The unhealthy scenario Triss found herself in was compounded by the truth she was keeping from her friend. As hard as it was for her to confess her self loathing, it would have been made easier had she not been trying to use those past negative experiences as a way of avoiding the real truth that was causing her pain.
@juliant6 ай бұрын
@thecocoacouch final comment: I'm also sure her friend was thinking, how long would you have kept the truth from me... if not for the truth serum you might have never told me. And still, she came to Triss's aid after that. So I don't fault her one little bit for reacting the way she did. You don't get to lie to my face and then complain about the reaction when I discover the truth. You don't get to have both.

FWIW, Peter was never a double agent. He was all-in with Erudite because he wanted to save his own hide when he realized he would always be hunted by Dauntless and Erudite. He only chose to betray Jeanine when he saw how easily she threw him aside, and was willing to let him die to get what she wanted. He thought he was so important to her. He thought he was so smart. And he thought he couldn't be replaced. Not so Pete. That was why he chose to betray Jeanine. I never liked Peter's character, and for good reason. I mean from a novel standpoint, or even movie standpoint, he adds intrigued and uneasiness wondering when he'll flip. Yet deep down he's just a coward. He likely only chose to join Dauntless at the ceremony in the first movie because he didn't want to be afraid anymore. He wanted to learn to fight so he could be his true self... A bully and an A-hole. Such a weak personality type IMHO.

Ansel Elgort chose to run like he did as an acting technique. Tris and Four were Dauntless, so they had the physical training to do what they do. Ansel said that Caleb was in the group that required knowledge, not physicality, so of course he would not be able to run and be as athletic as Tris and Four. Good choice! The next one Allegiant was made to go straight to video with no theatrical release. Shailene wanted the trio completed and that’s why the third one exists. It’s not good compared to the first two films. I really hope you go on next to “Fault in our Stars”. You will have a different view of Ansel after watching that film… and Shailene, chef’s kiss!!

Yes, those personality tests, particularly Myers Briggs (AKA 16 personalities) are not consistent (not scientifically strong) over time but can provide some general indicators of some characteristics at a given moment. I highly recommend, purely for fun, retesting after years have passed to see how experiences or your current mood may have changed your results and to see where there is overlap in your changing results. I’ve tested INFJ (2008), INFP (2017), and ISFJ (2023-did this after watching this video as your discussion made me curious), so definitely introverted and feeling but I think at each time I tested I could have had any of these three as there is a lot of overlap with them and I’m a bit of a blend (as many will be seeing as it is unreasonable to categorize everyone in a small number of hardened boxes/categories… there is always divergence😂) and have a history of some personality shifts based on circumstances but all those shifts were within this range of categories. And as for Enneagram, I presented as a possible 1 while actually being a solid 4 the first time (2017) but this time I was a clear 4 (2023). So thanks for sharing yours (seemed only fair to share back) and hello from a socially more chicken (introverted) personality.😉🐓 You may also find DiSC testing and Clifton StrengthsFinder testing interesting (both used by the corporate world more these days than those other two tests as they are seen as more helpful in companies with diverse populations that have to communicate with each other a lot as they focus a lot on using understanding of different communication styles to bridge communication gaps). There are places online where you can do DiSC for free but I think the strengths one always costs a bit. P.S. I saw a blog from a corporate group that does Enneagram testing recommending TV shows based on Enneagram type and they recommended Friends to type 2 (so with your wing 2 it seems that was a good show for you to choose for the channel as you were maybe a little more predisposed to enjoy it based on your personality). For type 3, they recommended Succession (so you may want to check that one out, maybe in your personal time, if you haven’t already). Granted, it seems they picked widely popular and critically acclaimed shows for all categories, so it was highly likely that everyone was going to like nearly all the recommendations and they weren’t necessarily super tailored to a given personality type.🤷♀️

Being a 4 is super interesting tho since I feel like I see them less haha. Yeah well one indicator for me was I used to be enfp and quite turbulent as a teenager but grew into an ENFJ and assertive (literally all just means I got more confidence and self disciplined)

@@thecocoacouch Your comment made me curious (as I rarely have run into peeps in person or read on social media anyone discussing Enneagrams, so I had no idea what was common or rare), so I looked it up and 4 is apparently pretty common, so you’ll likely run into more 4s with time. Interesting that you went the opposite direction that I did and at the opposite side of the introversion/extroversion spectrum!😂 Also in my quick search I saw poll results about the most common Enneagrams for each MB type and 2 and sometimes 3 were pretty common for ENFJ & ENFP while 4 is pretty common for INFJ & INFP but it’s pretty rare for ISFJ (and I just tested 4 and ISFJ minutes apart… makes me question that ISFJ result a wee bit… maybe that S result was due to just a single response or two that I wavered on and maybe I was super close to another INFJ result🤷♀️).

May I just ask because it’s been a while since I’ve read the books: the whole box was an honest mistake of the author, right? I mean, how stupid would the people from outside have to be to not give them a hint that being divergent is good? They let (or led?) a huge group of immensely flawed people believe that you have to belong to a faction, that the factions are more important than family, that keeping knowledge from each other is okay. If none of the testers know that being divergent is good (because you need to belong), they’re going to hide it to save the divergents. If the leaders don’t learn that all factions are good (because their flaws make them value one of the characteristics much more than the others) AND the procedure to open that box is really horrifying, painful and even for Tris almost deadly, how are they supposed to figure out that being divergent is actually good, is the goal?

This series was meant to be showing the downside of the PC culture and this generations habit of trying to cancel anyone who disagrees or doesn't accept their worldview. I think the books nailed it.
