@@TrendingReviews you mentioned moving your apps over with migration assistant. I apologize if you already know this but the apps on your i9 machine won't run natively on your m3 Max unless you reinstall them. The Intel versions of the apps from your i9 will run in emulation on an Apple Silicon machine. That could explain the disappointing performance you're seeing. You can check if you have any Intel apps on your system by opening System Profiler and looking in the Applications section. All the apps on your system will be listed there along with their type. Anything with type 'Universal' runs natively. Anything with the type 'Intel' runs in emulation.

That seems strange, when I went from a Macbook Pro 2018 Core i7 (6-core 16GB ram) to the 2020 M1 Macbook Pro, I felt a huge speed increase in day to day performance: booting, starting apps, final cut, xcode, developing software in ruby, running specs, lightroom, photoshop, everything felt much faster, compiling software was almost 2x faster. I am now looking to upgrade from the M1 to the M3 Max and I'm expecting a 5x performance boost (from Intel that would be around 11x faster). I mean my M1 has 16 billion transistors, the M3 Max has 82. M1 has 3.2 TFlops, the M3 Max has 20.4. To put that into perspective CPU is at AMD Threadripper 32c territory and graphics are faster than an RTX4070 while still being cool, quiet and with great battery - that's mental! Maybe try a clean install without restoring from a backup, maybe it's running Rosetta and X86 emulation? With all that said, the SSD performance just about doubled, so if your bottleneck is launching a large app, yes, that will only be 2x faster, but once it's running in ram, yeh, it absolutely should be 11x faster in things like compiling software, rendering and navigating the timeline, but not exporting video as that uses the media engine chips (allowing you to multi task) - that should be 2.5-3x faster as you experienced.

It’s only a extra few seconds wait , back in 2012 a normal pc boot time for me would be 3-5min
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 6 ай бұрын
@@curiouspeople6441 It's like that, running specs on the M1 (web development in Ruby) went from 25 minutes down to about 15 minutes going from Intel to M1 (original 2020, not even the Pro chip). On the M3 Max it goes down to 3 minutes - that drastically speeds up development time. Same is true with video editing, when you apply stabe or a colour grade, it's instead of waiting 50 seconds for each clip to render, it could be 4 seconds. Exporting 3x faster. Lightroom becomes really snappy without all those few seconds delay for every edit. Not to mention it allows you to do things like run ChatGPT4 in offline more or do other AI related training or using AI tools, etc, etc. All of this may be irrelevant to you if you're just browsing the web :)

Well as someone who uses a MacBook Pro for music production, I can vouch that the unbinned m3 max (16 core) is light years ahead of my intel i9 2018 6 core MacBook Pro. So much so that it would be ridiculous for me to compare them they’re so different from each other. It destroys the intel one in every aspect. It’s not just the most powerful laptop I’ve ever worked with… it’s the most powerful computer I’ve ever worked with. And it does it all without breaking a sweat…. Unplugged.

Apple specifies that the 11x claims was with the 16 core /40 Core GPU. The memory is different. If you try to set up the two M3 Max you will see they have completely different options that are mutually exclusive. The 16 core GPU has much more bandwidth. M3 Pro does behave like a M2 Pro with less power. Saying that,. What I FOUND. My Intel scored much better than his. Geekbench 6 single was 1,153. That said. I found the real case to be 3x on average. With a subtlety. I can keep working in other tasks. I did a test in Blender 4.0.1 with all experimental features on and the barbershop was rendered in 2:04 minutes vs 2:27 on a Nvidia 4070Ti. So... since Apple is abandoning Intel, yes it does makes sense to buy it. The memory is very expensive because the reduced the geometries and they have low yield. The M4 according to TMSC will have a bigger geometry in memory. So the bandwidth again will be less and will be 10% faster overall as their estimates. My specifications are: M3 Max. 16 Cores, 40 GPU. 128GB of RAM and 4TB SSD.

Hey @ thanks for sharing all of this. I am considering an almost identical upgrade. I currently have the late 2019 MBP 16" Intel i9 with 64GB RAM & 2 TB. Thinking to upgrade to the same maxed out M3 Max, 128GB of Ram & 4 TB SSD. I do ALL Kinds of creative work on my laptop. Frequently in several of the Adobe Suite apps, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Web Apps like Webflow, and a ton of multi-tasking with apps like Notion, many many browser windows, productivity apps running in the background, etc. Overall, geekbench numbers aside, would you say that you felt your upgrade to the M3 Max was a truly significant one, with a substantive boost in your productivity & workflow efficiency? Or does it feel somewhat marginal by comparison?

@@Wildenfree I bought a separate KLIM Airflow + Laptop Cooling Pad for my M3 Max alongside with Mac Fan Control to fire up wee it hits 60 degrees (celsius) and the productivity is over the top. I do everything as well including some Blender and I can see performance that rivals desktop graphics cards. Regarding video everything is very very smooth and Pixelmator Pro do everything instantly. It is pricey. But zero regrets. And the longer I have it the less I regret these 128GB of RAM. It is a beast. where my Intel starts at a temp of 60 degrees this one stays at 38 or 39 with heavy load. The only time it reaches 66 degrees (and all fans at maximum speed to keep it that way) is when I render for hours in Blender with zero concerns that I will destroy my laptop. Long story short. The difference is like day is to night.

I have the 16-inch 2019 MBP which I use it for Xcode and programming. I am tempted because of the 11x faster proposition by Apple compared to the latest M3 machine, but this video makes me to rethink. Should I upgrade if the Intel 2019 machine is doing the job correctly? Maybe, not yet. Only drawback with Intel MBP is it gets pretty hot and noisy. Nice video and practical comparison.

For Xcode and programming, the M3 Macbook will not be 11x faster at all. It might be 2x faster, yes, but as you've seen, it's not a huge leap. But this also depends on the specs of your Intel MBP, if you have a fast CPU and GPU already and it's working fine, then it might not be worth spending all that money. But if you want to do any other high end graphical rendering or process intensive applications, or if you just want to stop your MBP getting hot and noisy, then it's a good upgrade. 😊

2015 15" is one of the best MBP built along with 2012 and 2019 full specs. The one with 2.5 or higher Ghz and 2GB GPU is fantastic for office. I own many MBP. Even this very i9 top specs and the new M´s. Not really an amazing upgrade. 16" screen is nice though. Built on the 2015 is better and more durable. I don't know about coding but on Final Cut, Adobe it works great. (2015)

The Geekbench 6 scores of your I9 Intel are suspiciously very, very low (@6:19). Single-core should be around 1600, almost double what your system scored. Multi-core should be around 7000, give or take. Perhaps your MBP was set to Low Power mode when you executed the test? And/Or there might be something gone wrong with the thermal performance of your 4 years old MBP, likely due to aging and heavy usage. I usually don't sell my old Macs when I upgrade, and my 5 years old mid 2018 6-core i7 MBP is still scoring much higher results than yours (1400 single-core, ~5600 multi-core). Since the mid 2018 models are well known to implement among the worst chassis and thermal designs ever released by Apple, your 2019 model should perform much better under all aspects. Of course that is not to say you should not expect much better performance from the new M3 Max system. From my experience and general use cases, the gain is 2.5X to 3X, certainly not 11X like Apple wants me to believe. I wish!! Thank you for sharing your experience. Take care.

I know Apple marketing department is raving about their "scary fast" CPUs, but the performance of M3 Max 16 core is comparable to current Intel Core i5, and the graphics performance is comparable to nVidia from about 2010. I made the mistake of buying maxed out MacBook Pro 16'' (128 GB RAM, 8TB SSD) and honestly not that impressed at all. Just scrolling this page up and down is stuttering and choppy as hell on this "scary fast" machine.

@@veritasdivina hey, I got the m3 max a couple of days ago so I can tell you that I actually compared it with m1 pro (16'') from my work, and hell it is faster, and much better. I ran Geekbench, browser tests etc. I ran a compiler a few times to see and it's super fast. I can't complain except the high memory usage. I took a 48gb ram model but it takes some 32gb by default. Wtf. I have read somewhere it's because of in-memory file cache. It's fine though. I love this laptop. The macos is the biggest hurdle, as I'm a Windows guy and not being able to configure close/minimize buttons position is a bummer.

So basically I was right and a laptop is made to be used on the go not plugged in. I know the performance drops significantly when not plugged in! I know this as loads of other reviewers have done the test the right way apples for apples so to speak! So basically the (NO!) part on your title is wrong! Just did the test on my i9 MacBook and got 1377 single 6190 multi plugged in and 844 single 4828 multi not plugged in. So your results are wrong to me. If you are doing testing at least make sure it’s fair and accurate! Linus found that out

I’ll also add the m3 got those results unplugged and I designed to run at lower wattages, and lower temps. The 3nm on the m3 chip is more efficient than the intels. Don’t know what happened with the boot up but 99% of the time Apple silicon will win over intel. 👌
