In my eyes, it not about the headphone jack itself. It's about loosing features and paying more for it. Samsung's S5 had water proofing, headphone jack, IR blaster, user replaceable battery, physical home button, all while keeping the best hardware for its time for $499. I know that today a lot of those things are not needed and or wanted by some, however getting rid of them, then charging more for the lesser thing you had. That is what modern tech is today, "pay more for less because you don't have another option if you want to be apart of the world and we know it".

Surprised that nobody in comments seems to care about the Internet Archive... it's incredibly important to me. The fact that they're facing such legal issues is troubling, because I would like to see their archives better and more complete, not less. Imagine if going forward, there's no record of anything, because of copyright case losses in court. This is something courts need to address better. When you put your website out on the internet, it's a public space. When you take a copy/image of a website for an archive, it's no different than taking a picture of something in public. It's important that we all have available to us the previous versions of websites and pages. Already, pages go offline, content is lost, or even worse... maliciously changed without notice or warning, in hopes that people will never know what the page originally said. This is especially important in cases where TOS/EULA modifications are made.

So I get the argument that "most people" probably are where Brett is on the PS5. However, that doesn't justify actively removing the options from the console (disk drive, stand). It doesn't matter how small the subset of people is that use those things. They should be included. It realistically doesn't cost Sony much at all to attach the disk drive and vertical stand as default options. They just want to nickel and dime customers because they know there are people out there that want or need those things. Also you're forgetting that the PS5 pro can play PS4 games. Plenty of which are on disk.

@FreelancerSystemАй бұрын
@UFDTech and that's the problem. Users are actively having their choices stripped away. Like Louis Rossman says, they can change the terms of the sale after the sale. Which means you don't own the games you buy if they require a download and online license key. There are users that prefer to own and use the physical media. Should their choice to play it on a clearly better console be taken away simply because there's not "enough" of them?

Most ppl are choosing to purchase digital copies of games because there isn't even an option to purchase them physically to begin with. So that was a crazy take. The key word is 'choice'. When there is one, most people would prefer a physical copy. For the consoles, where there is a physical copy choice, means that there also isn't a difference between the cost of having or not having a disk drive in the console to begin with. Can't use that as an argument or data to say digital sales are better, when the disk drive doesn't come with the console by default. Saying Sony has the sales to back up that digital sales are better, is probably true but means nothing because the console without the disk drive costs less than the one that does. The argument that physical copies of games are just license keys, is even crazier. Physical copies of games can be played without the optional updates, not connected to the internet, from beginning to end without an issue.

The problem with removing the headphone jack is that you're removing the ability to use a bunch of old audio equipment for seemingly no reason, which is only furthering the problems created by e-waste. Not to mention bluetooth headphones are way more expensive compared to their wired counterparts and almost always offer worse sound. Then there's the whole kerfuffle of having to recharge your headphones, and if you want to use your wireless headphones while they need charging all of a sudden your wireless headphones are now wired. Do I agree that the future is better wireless headphones? I would say so, yes. Would I say we were ready to cut the headphone jack when we did? Absolutely not, one of the dumbest design decisions in phones. As for people not using their buying power correctly, it's kind of hard to say "I'm not gonna buy a phone without a headphone jack" if all the major competitors haven't included one for years. Older phones are becoming obsolete, I've had to upgrade my phone recently because my software is no longer supported on my old phone (that had a headphone jack) and surprise surprise I couldn't find an appropriate phone for my use case that had a headphone jack, just a lot of cheap knockoffs with laggy interfaces or middling phones for hefty sums. I now have to buy a completely brand new set of worse headphones than what I have or buy an adapter which also limits the functionality of my phone, no matter what I do I just lose in this situation.

Discs are not just licenses, they're literally blu-rays that contain the game, you can play the games offline with the disc, even if you don't have updates. I think the biggest issue with the digital consoles is that you lose access to your games when you sell the console to upgrade to something new. On PC we just reinstall our launchers and continue to play whatever we want. And console gamers would argue that they can resell their games to effectively make their games cheaper, which they won't be able to do anymore. I do what Bret does. Wired earphones are still a very big thing in some markets outside of the USA, hence why Apple is not. Nothing else can beat the price-to-performance you get with a 3.5mm headphone. USB-C earphones are not only more expensive, but they are so much inferior in terms of sound quality until you spend a stupid amount of money on them, or wireless earphones which not only sound inferior in terms of price-to-performance but also can get lost easily in crowded places, so them being "wireless" can quickly turn from being a value proposition for the product to an actual liability. Most average people will always just easily accept whatever crap the corporation decides to throw at them, hence why the "most people don't care" argument doesn't matter. It's the enthusiasts that care, who will speak out, and it's them who are bummed out by the removal whenever a company does something anti-consumer like that.

No, it does translate to real world purchase decisions, just not for many people. The point is a few people want headphone jacks and card readers and other than a few manufactures, like Sony, they don't really have the option to have these on flagship phones. If you don't care about the headphone jack you can just ignore it, it won't hurt you and while it will make the phone a little more expensive, the difference is marginal and my guess is many people would use it at least a few times in edge cases so many of them will get used even if not often, granted this was probably even more valid 5 years ago when they went away. PS: You still need to charge headphones, if you only have one pair I guess you don't care but if you have a desktop pair of headphones it really makes little sense to want to unplug it and plug it back in to charge from time to time. Also, even fairly cheap headphones like the DT770 sound much better than the Sony pair you. As you noticed the improvent with your first real pair of headphones, there are advantages to wires as well and they won't end anytime soon, not for decently priced headphones and amps.
@GiraffitiАй бұрын
Hate to drag on the topic longer, but people forget the order of audio. The premium audio tech we have now arguably was a chain reaction from the removal of the headphone jack. Bluetooth offerings went from sub-par or overpriced trash like early Beats and name brand pasting to premium offerings like Sony XM4s, Airpods, and Galaxy Buds. Wired options also experienced the same with the Chinese HIFI boom and pressure to innovate left last decade’s audio equipment in the dust. It’s a chicken and egg situation where I doubt the audio products we have today wouldn’t have existed anytime soon if it weren’t for pressure from the headphone jack removal (better BT quality, wired audio worth having a wire for, etc).

16:50 SCOOORCHING hot take. Digital only PC and digital only PS are two different leagues. If PSN dies on PlayStation, the whole console, especially a digital one, is just a brick, a fancy doorstep, but on PC, if Steam dies, we can just move to GOG. GOG died?! Okay, we'll move to Epic, Epic died?! Okay, we will move to itch, everything died? We'll just emulate other consoles and play those games that way. I haven't purchased a singular physical game on PC in years as well because: 1) I can not find anyone who's selling a used PC game, and I can't find a new one either. 2) The last physical game for pc in my memory was GTA 5 in 2015. Next to no-one is advertising that they are selling their game for PC in physical format. Also, I think people are mostly buying games digitally on PlayStation is because they can share them with friends. Two or more friends can just agree to share one account, and spend $30-35 each and get a 60-70 for them to enjoy, me and my bud have been doing this for years and years, though I still buy games physically when I can. 18:30 Sony has a weird history with handhelds. They NAILED the PSP, messed up with Vita and NEVER returned after that and ever since, they've been playing the same 'ol record that: "nobody wants handhelds, guys😭" even though Switch has sold 143m units. I wonder if they expected the Portal to sell 1,5 copies and that's why it was sold out everywhere, maybe they just haven't believed in it at first 🤔

I'm excited for the first "Pro" phone that uses 2 USB C ports. I think there's a gaming phone that already does this, but I'd like to be able to use my high-end DAC/AMP while charging. I'm sure they'll need desktop modes and real mobile productivity to improve before it's considered though

I think the bigger thing here is so many people don't have disk drives now, and I hate not having the option however I am seeing the value in the current disk technology being a thing of the past, like floppy disks and floppy drives, both generations however, there's newer disk drives and volumetric storage technologies using the volume of quartz crystals and femto storage solutions that will make CD's, DVD's and blue rays look pathetic in comparison the current game market because of the advancement of hardware has been really sloppy in development to the point, some games won't fit on a single blue ray any more, and we're approaching a point that ALL games that aren't 2D or simple mobile apps are going to eventually get to that point, but not for the new portable media solutions :)

PS4 and PS5 discs include a fully playable 1.0 version of the game, (at least 99% of the time if there are rare exceptions).

The PS5 stand isn't necessary, but it makes the console more stable (less likely to tip over). If Sony provided a way to transfer over disc games to purely digital, that would help, though in my case i also use my console as a Blu Ray player.

I disagree with the take on headphone jacks. I still use headphones with aux and because of this trend, I've been forced to use adapters for years. I hate it

Headphone jacks should stay . I used headphones when my PS2 was hooked up to my portable stereo system

Surely the Intel CPU issues might not have been a thing had they required you to either upgrade your Motherboard or they actually tested on older Motherboards to begin with. It looks more like a compounding issue that Intel didn’t bother verifying every Motherboard from previous generations. It’s probably a reason, I’m not saying it is the reason.
@rin_rin69Ай бұрын
They can't make defaults because all cpu use different voltages. People just don't notice because they call it a good cpu or a bad cpu if it gets average overclock a stability and latency.. Of which you can't return a cpu because it doesn't reach reach advertised clock speeds (here anyway)

Haven't owned a console since the NES, but still don't think the PS5 Pro is priced too high, if the performance claims are somewhat accurate. I definitely build customers PCs better for the price, but I think it's more fair to compare consoles to mini PCs or gaming laptops. It may compete with a RTX 4080 mobile based laptop, for a lot less. Where they get you is game and subscription pricing anyway. Also, forget the vertical stand, your liquid metal will thank you.
@lain328Ай бұрын
Yeah, I honestly don't get why people are freaking out over the price. Sony has been selling the playstation brand at a lost since the very beginning back in the 90s, and they never stopped. The PS5 Pro is like the Neo Geo AES back in the 90s. They're selling it knowing. It's going to have a niche market. It's basically for the hardcore PS5 enjoyers who wanna take their experience to the next level just a bit more.

As an always PC gamer, I'm honestly surprised the disk drive wasn't dropped back in the PS4/Xbone generation, since that felt way past the digital game era even back then.

I haven't bought a physical copy of a console game for about six years. I haven't bought physical PC software or games for longer than that even. I have many 360 and early Xbox one games on disc, but ever since I got fiber at my house, there seems to be no point. If you buy a game on disc you still have to download the massive updates and patches anyway, why not just go all the way.

Intel has a hard time replacing the broken i9s because that SKU is the most likely to break while also having the worst yields, they have to make several i7s and i5s for every new i9.
@myne00Ай бұрын
Yep. The top 5% of 2 years of production. Without huge yield improvements, it requires 2 years of production to replace.

1st time question: I have a 7600X and 4060 TI 8gb (yeah..I know). I want to go ahead and upgrade from my 165hz 32inch curved FHD monitor to a similar 1440p one. I can literally see the pixels but I love big screens. I feel like with all the new upscaling tech, I might be able to play alot of games at 1440p at 60+ frames? which is fine for me. Should I run dual monitors in case I have to run something in 1080p which looks crap on 1440p? Or should I be fine?
