Somehow the "Pro" version of a console doesn't come with all of the features that the base model had (disk drive and vertical stand). This is why I'm happy Sony is porting all of their games to PC. My base PS5 will be my last console.

I can build a 4060 Ti gaming PC with a BD-RW drive and 2TB of storage for roughly the same price. Yes I can, we're targeting 60 fps, that doesn't require a grand worth of motherboard, CPU and RAM. A new old stock $200 PC with a Ryzen 3800 and 16GB RAM will do. X99 will even do the job.

It's not about whether you're okay with the disc drive being gone. It's the fact that they're not including it with a 700 dollar console. Maybe you're okay with buying games all digital, but most of us probably aren't. And you can't play used games either. And one day when the PS5 store shuts down, and you can't buy the disc drive too anymore, you'll be left with a dead console.

Discs are just licence keys now anyway, so we still have to rely on all the patches and updates being backed up to even use the discs, and we'll have to jailbreak the console to install those patches anyway. The 360 was the last plug and play console

These ridiculous tech prices are what's making the economy so bad, inflation has historically been balanced out and kept to reasonable levels thanks to tech being deflationary. Nvidia, Apple, Samsung, Sony and other tech giants are the cause of high inflation, every time someone lets these companies rip them off, EVERYTHING rapidly gets more expensive.

Thats with tax but the disc drive cost around 120 and the stand is 30 i think... so around 950 euro for the complete pack vs 500 - 550 for the old PS5... pretty insane.

Not entirely...has to do with the general slowing of the economy due to inflation in the past 4 years, which is in part due to poor political decisions made by the american fed and certain states. There are more reasons than that as economics are extremely complicated, but it's definitely not just corporate greed.

I think we left that era of electronics getting cheaper and faster 10 years ago, at least here in NZ ( 1080 was $1000nzd, 4080 is $2000 etc). I think it's just a lot more shocking to console users since their refreshes are so far apart, 5/10 years of pricier parts and inflation condensed into one installment.

Have you ever built a PC? My 2-year-old rig has similar raw power and tech specs to the new PS5 Pro. Since it's now considered older tech, it's much cheaper, especially with AMD, Nvidia, and Intel gearing up for their next upgrade cycle, which will further drive down prices.

@@MetallicBlade I guess it's a combination of people being desperate for entertainment during Covid and the miners paying insane prices for the cards. Manufacturers saw what they could get away with and kept running with it. A few years back a high end pc with a flagship gpu was 1500-2000 USD. An RTX 4090 costing that much alone is insane and inflation doesn't justify it. Prices of PC parts are fine when adjusted for inflation, but GPUs are insanely overpriced. And people who keep buying parts at those prices are just perpetuating the issue. I would be glad if the 800 dollar console could outperform a 1500 dollar pc as that would bring pc prices down, but it just isnt happening.

With the $700 price point I am now seeing more comments about building a PC instead. The main argument to that is building a $700 PC in 2024 that would be worth building in the first place plus needing Monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc. which would further increase the price. Even though a $700 PC would not be anything extravagant, this absurd console price helps justify expanding the PC budget and completely ditch console. The value argument is washing away, might as well just go big and have it all. You want SONY games? Steam has you covered. You want Microsoft? Game Pass for PC has you covered. You want everything else in between? You got it. The really cool thing about a PC is when you buy a case, it is designed to stand up as advertised, you don't have to buy a case followed by a case stand. Apple users, you might be confused here on how that concept works but trust me it is cool to make one purchase and be covered.

Sony raised the price on the PS5pro because there is no competition from XBox and to test the waters on the priceing for the PS6. If we buy these units at this price, do not be shocked to see the next console be at least $700. I also want to say that the BOM cost for the PS5 pro is not more than the none pro, especially since there is no disk drive.

The main benefit of consoles was accessibility, ease of use, cost, and often a performance edge compared to PC gaming due to the custom nature of the hardware specialized FOR gaming. This generation of consoles basically has none of that. Software is more expensive on consoles, runs worse, is complicated by various performance modes and up-scaling that isn't consistent and often bugged, looks worse due to dynamic resolution and bad anti-aliasing that makes everything blurry, has more limited input and display options despite that added complexity, and is just generally not hitting the same quality or quantity of PC titles.

A lot of the people who want the disc drive probably want it for a good Bluray/UHD Bluray player so that the console can be their main TV player unit, which is a reasonable thing to want for $700 (remember, the PlayStation is the reason Bluray won the format war and became mainstream in the first place)

That is the main reason I want it. If you have a good tv, you can tell the difference between playing a movie from a disk, vs streaming. If you have a good Atmos setup, playing lossless audio from a disk sounds FAR superior to what you get from streaming.

After having slept on it the bump in price sorta makes sense (ish). Ain't one thing I can think of in tech that's got cheaper over the past 4 years, except maybe SSD's which are about a ton for a 1tb PS5 compatible stick if you're shrewd. A base disc PS5 with 1tb extra storage is gonna be £580-600 so an extra... Wait.... Forgot about the disc drive. Seeing as the Pro *AND* the drive are cheaper in the US the UK really should get a version with a disc drive for £700.

Kind of there always will be a customer for consoles. Same than with macs and Apple stuff in general. There's a type of user that (tech savvy or not) does not want to mess around or troubleshoot even minimal stuff. And that portion of the population keeps being large.

I second the audio investment point. For most of my life, I used the earphones that came with the phone until a friend let me try his iPhone and the earphones that came with it. Nothing special, but it was a cut above what Samsung was offering at the time, so I started saving for some Skullcandys. I got their best offering, which changed everything for teen me, and I stuck with them ever since-until I got the Buds2 Pro on special for half the retail price in South Africa, where they usually overcharge like crazy. You know what I mean, Brett! And wow, do they sound amazing. When they eventually stop working, I’m not going to spend anything less than $170 on my next pair because I need them to sound good. I can't go back to anything less than this.

I got those Sony XM4s at launch (August 2020) and use them almost every single day. They are an incredible value with amazing sound and features. They don't seem to be breaking down in any way and the battery life is still on point 4 years later. I love these things.

We really do, it's £25 more than the EU (pretty sure their prices include VAT), but nearly 50 quid more than the US! (not including sales tax/VAT). *AND* the disc drive is 20 quid more expensive than the US too... On reflection I understand the price over the base model, kinda, but 70/80 quid more than the US if you want a Pro that can read discs is just rucking fidiculous. Wouldn't mind but Stirling is pretty stable to the dollar right now, and isn't expected to drop over the next 12 months! It's Bloody thievery I tell ya!

PS2 and PS3 helped their respective disc formats become dominant, I know people who bought a PS2 *just* as a DVD player and after all these years one of them still uses his and it's never seen a game in it's life!! And we all know the PS3 playing BluRay is what killed HD-DVD. (Although BluRay was always superior, PS3 just ended the argument much quicker)

Even though the 7000 series wasn't much faster than the 6000 series, the prices were set properly. The 7800xt was around the same price as the 6700xt. So the ps5 pro is updating the gpu to a modern one at the same original price or close. The 7800xt is $470 today and the 6700xt was $480 back then. $700 is really hard to justify, but I understand why it costs that much. Regular PS5 is rumored to cost $450 to manufacture. From what we know it's using the CPU and ram configuration and the closest equivalent GPU is a 7700 XT. The 7700 XT costs $400. If you asume Sony has reduced manufacturing costs it still probably costs $600 or more to make the PS5 pro. The PS4 was much cheaper to manufacture given the APU they were using.

I honest like the disc drive so I can watch Blu-Rays and DVDs without having to buy a seperate device. Physical game disks don't have "play out of box" aspect anymore, with rare exemptions, so the game disks are just installer shortcuts anymore.

It wouldn't surprise me if both companies discontinued the old models since they're probably still losing money on consoles sold because the Series X and PS5 should have launched at least at $699. I mean 1TB SSDs at launch of the consoles were still $150 on their own. A CPU similar to the Xbox cost as much as a Series S and a GPU similar to the Series X cost the same as the entire console. They were far too cheap and this is just a correction of that mistake.

I can attest to good pair of headphones. Got a Sony WHCH710N on black Friday for around $80 in 2021, and they are still the headphones I choose to bring with when I go out. I have spent more on headphones(SteelSeries Artis Pro Wireless and Corsair Virtuoso) but the Sony Bluetooth one is still my go to when out of the house, they have a newer model out, but I think any Sony Bluetooth headphones would be a great investment.

I'm actually wondering if the metal stand for the PlayStation five Pro is needed at all if you're not doing vertical but doing horizontal. The previous plastic one clipped on with a hook, but I don't see that on the metal version. I'm assuming it could be connected both ways?

I think when you look at graphic card prices and then look at the PS5 pro GPU features the price covers the APU and not the SDD,MOBO io connectors controller psu etc.... however Xbox and Xbox 360 were sold at a loss with Microsoft hoping to get money back from software sales

The lack of disk drive takes it from a $200 bump to a $300 bump which makes the price even harder to swallow. I was expecting that price. I just hope that xbox comes out with something similar before GTA6 so I'm not forced to buy a Sony console.

Bought my Sega Mega Drive 2 for AUD$149 with Sonic 3 back in 1994. I then spent like $800 on a Sega Saturn at release using inheritance from my grandmother. I have a fairly poor record of console choice in each generation, including: Atari Lynx, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series S.

The UK and EU prices for the PS5 Pro include the sales tax already where in the US prices are listed without it so the difference is not as much as it first appears.

Reese arose a very interesting concept that, I believe, is almost a must when it comes to technology. Spending more money usually gets you better things (as expected) but when you try to get the MOST expensive things you start to really enter a "too much for too little" zone that stops being cost effective and interesting overall. This can be for audio, controllers, processors, cars... quite much all modern tech. It is quite wise to aim for the best, but not overshoot. (like using a threadripper, you might reap the benefits, but if it is for gaming, it won't benefit you)

Comment response response: Apple won't even give 120Hz displays to their newest phones unless you pay an additional premium for the higher-end version, why would they ever consider giving anything good to their customers that can't afford airpods or other bluetooth headphones? If they don't include the stand then I think a lot of gamers will be making the switch to PC or just keeping the original PS5 longer. It's a major slap in the face. I get everything costs more these days but I just don't see the price to performance reason to upgrade at the end of the day for consumers.

I really don't get that "pay 700 bucks only to play console exclusives." Consoles can't only play their exclusives, but also many cross-platform titles. So you do NOT pay for the exclusives, you pay that price if you want to play all available games, exclusives as well as third-party ones, in the best quality available on the PS5. If you don't need that, there's the regular PS5 for you still in stock.

I think console owners don't know what it takes to make something run 4k 60 fps. It would cost more to make a PC that can do this. Seems like some people think they have to get the PRO over the base model.

Console prices are high, but the PS5 Pro is still cheaper than a video card of the same performance (before you factor in the other $600-1000 it takes to build the rest of a PC to put it in). I don't like that things are getting more expensive (I still remember when gas was under $1/gallon), but that's how the world works. That's why fast food work starts over $20/hr, and a foot long Subway is almost $10. Look at it that way, and the PS5 Pro is just 100 foot long Subs on sale.

I think the price of the PS5Pro isn't crazy, tbh. If you adjust the PS3 price since launch for inflation, It'll be ~900 usd. I don't think the PS5 Pro will flop. Us, PC Gamers, won't even consider it probably, but it'll sell well.

I'll pass on this thou... last sony console I have is 4... never got around to 5 due to scalpers... and since then... I lived without and am fine and continue to do so. I am happy on PC & Mobile/Handhelds.

you forgot to mention the slight price increase in controllers, not that it matters alot, but for many people 5$ is a day's worth of food supply.
