It's not just the disabling of hyperthreading that may improve or degrade performance, but removing those extra _pipelines_ dedicated to HT can only be better for overall throughput latency than simply disabling HT on a current RPL CPU. We saw little performance degradation with the 9700k and that still had the pipelines on the silicon, only fused off. You could easily chalk that up to lower clock speeds vs the 9900k. Personally I think hyperthreading became obsolete with the introduction of 8+ cores and especially E cores. If Intel actually pushes the use of APO to make better use of those E cores for lesser demanding threads I really think Arrow Lake and beyond could really shine in many applications. But that's a big "if" when they've done little with APO since 14th gen has launched. But that's just the .02 from someone that actively uses E cores to their full production capacity daily and wouldn't give them up for 3D vcache any day. I don't own a 4090 and I don't play at 1080p like a peasant so my 14700k is losing nothing in gaming to the 7800X3D, but it absolutely annihilates the X3D the second I turn that game off and ask my rig to do some actual adult work.

Easy enough to do a test, run with e-cores disabled and HT on so 8c-16t, then disable HT and enable 8 e-cores. For 16c-16t. I think that would give you a preview. The e-cores aren’t as gimp as they are made out to be, with a better hardware scheduler on chip intel could actually be right that doing it this way is more perf per watt, also probably easier from the software side as well.

The funny thing, afaik, is that Intel said that the space that they'll save on the die from removing HT, would allow them to add more E cores, which they have improved performance of to a degree that you wouldn't really notice that you are missing HT.

as long as they add more cores to make up for it it will be a very good thing. no more seudo threads

Very true. Most SP games have the best 1% lows and most consistent frame times with 8c8t, sometimes even 6

I always turn off HT and have been doing so for years even on cpus with few cores. It reduces latency and improves single threaded performance/microstuttering/whatever by a slight amount as the cache and other resources aren't split between 2 cores. So it feels better and more consistent as a result, at least to me. And on 8C/8T with my 14900KF it makes no reduction in performance except for the few games that make use of more threads as you mentioned.
