I would really like to see that doubles play and the faces of your opponents when you do the whole "I wish it was you that died and have Boromir" back

This is 100% going to happen. I'm going to use as many quotes as possible.😀

This was a great chat, and you've got a new sub! I'm by far more of a boardgamer than miniatures gamer, and while I do agree that an IP can be beneficial for both genre's in bringing people in and even keeping them in, I do agree that they often work better (generally speaking) as boardgames. Mostly just due to their ability to be a completely contained game (whether it's one and done, or get's expansions) means you're less tied to the idea of a competitive game that is driven by a steady stream of new releases. I'm also a big fan of IP inspired games. The biggest example for me is Nemesis by Awaken Realms, which clearly takes most of it's inspiration from Alien. The IP can never be taken away because they own it, and they also have the freedom to do what they want with it, without being tied to an existing world. It's obviously not the same thing, but can often still bring in new people that are fans of the IP that inspired the product.

I got quite a few minis for the Terminator Genisys miniatures game which River Horse produced some years back but didn't really get the time to get as into it as I would have liked. Bit sad when a few years later it effectively bit the dust. I've kept everything as I still might want to do something with it when I have time. But it was a good example of where a universe could be limited - either intrinsically or from a licence perspective - and this can be restrictive. Suspect there aren't many licensee games in this vein which managed to break this cycle; ME SBG (the one I'm very invested in), with significant community support, was an example of one that did.

MESBG has definitely managed to style it out a lot longer than most games based on IP. The upcoming film(s) will hopefully keep the momentum going and keep people engaged in the game long in to the future.

Great podcast guys really interesting listening to how wargaming companies work and how their licensing properties work. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and keep the podcasts coming really enjoyable.

14:05 love the podcast lads but are your studios haunted? Some freaky audio glitches. Still great though😂

haha been thinking this also!

Sorrrrry 👻 We use an automatic editor which is obviously doing something strange to the audio. Will try to fix it for future episodes.

When I saw the title I thought "Oh, the news about all the MESBG stuff getting sent to the "Legends" graveyard just dropped" - gonna be interesting to revisit this conversation about making games around licensed IPs in light of all the non-film stuff getting removed!

Battletech is actually the weird exception. The IP is split between Topps (tabletop, miniatures) and Microsoft (digital games). Catalyst is just a licensee. What makes it even more unique is that the core wargame has remained mostly unchanged for 40 years despite continuously adding new mechs and moving thru several "historical" eras of storyline.

It's also no where near as successful as other games. I would bet 40k sells in more in 1 year than the whole of Battletech's existence. Not changing the rules is only really appealing to grognards. Alpha Strike is the future of the universe, but only if it adapts to the changing market.

Keep a plate of cherry tomatoes next to the game, one for every model in the force. Then eat one every time someone dies!

Every time Benji speaks it sounds like there's a demon sawing some wood in the background! Interesting chat though.

Everyone is "limited production and store space" ; " stuff has to go forward"; " why don't you just play/buy something else?" , up until their game faction or game is gone.

I agree - there’s a lot of attitude that if it doesn’t affect ‘me’ then it’s not a problem. The big hit to Middle Earth is going to be discussed in more detail next week…

Guys please fix your mics. It's really annoying sounds like someone is scrapping a wall or xps while you speak. Otherwise the podcast is great but this noise puts me off 😂
