Intelligent design believers use the eye as a proof of intelligent design due to its perfectness in complexity and performance. If it is so perfect, why has an eagle with roughly the same eye size a better performance in resolution than the human eye and why has a cat or dog better night vision than humans. Why does the design criteria differ? If the designer (God?) is able to come up with a marvelous design for eagles and dogs, why was the best from both not implemented in the human eye? So God thinks apparently that animals deserve better designed eyes than the Christians who pray to him every day.

If everything needs design, then who or what designed God? Or is god not part of "everything?" Intelligent designers would claim that God is NOT part of everything, but however they want to dance around it, if they can conceive of something with no beginning, then why can' t they accept a universe with no design and no beginning? I am totally fine with accepting the Universe as God, if there must be such a thing, but a God with no apparent connection to us or concern for us at all.
@landsgevaer3 жыл бұрын
"Everything has a cause" cannot be extrapolated to any scale. For example, particle decay - as far as we understand - doesn't have a cause. We certainly can't be sure the universe needs a cause. Even if god didn't need a cause, then the universe doesn't either. I wish that assumption would not be accepted without evidence or logical support.

@landsgevaer3 жыл бұрын
@@walnutoil100 Evidence for non-existence, you ask!? Such evidence doesn't exist. Like I wrote, a positive statement needs evidence. The statement "everything needs a cause" requires evidence. Until then I do not accept it. That does not imply that I accept the opposite statement, in principle yet. I can go further though, since in fact I do tentatively accept that not everything has a cause. I can give evidence that current physics doesn't require a cause for particle decay. Look up hidden variables and Bell's theorem. Particles are just particles, they don't have an internal clock that ticks down. The theory of particle decay doesn't need that, as it stands. Btw: that doesn't prove that current physics is right or complete (it almost surely isn't), but it shows that working models of reality cán be formulated that do not include causes for everything. That is all I need. Causes do not *necessarily* exist. And then, on showing the universe doesn't require a cause if god doesn't. If god doesn't need a cause, then there are exceptions to the supposed rule that "everything needs a cause". That logically follows. If you apply an amended rule like "everything often has causes, but not always" to the universe, you cannot conclude anything about whether the universe has a cause. That also follows logically, it seems to me. If you are allowed to use special pleading for god, taking exception to the rule that everything has a cause, then anyone is allowed special pleading too, for example for the universe. If you can posit special properties for a god without evidence, not having a cause being one of them, then I can posit those for the universe. (That would not be a scientific approach though, so I don't take it for the universe, and I don't accept it for god.) For clarity (...?), I can add that fundamental physics doesn't seem to be formulated in terms of cause and effect. There is only coincidence when particles interact, and local continuity when states develop over time. The arrow of time and the existence of apparent causes are emergent only at macroscopic scale, it looks like.

@@walnutoil100 So you're saying we do know the cause of particle decay? I'm excited to hear it. This is going to change a massive field of science with what you're about to demonstrate! I can't wait!
@wyldink13 жыл бұрын
@@walnutoil100 Yes, you are shifting the burden. I'm glad you can at least recognize that. Now, can you demonstrate that anyone knows what causes particle decay? Because you've implicitly adopted the position that someone does.
@landsgevaer3 жыл бұрын
@@walnutoil100 Jeez, need I point it out? I can't scroll these comments and type at the same time, but you literally asked for evidence for my statement that particle decay doesn't have a cause, earlier. That is the same as asking for evidence for the non-existence of a cause for particle decay. Which is asking me to prove a non-existence. Next you suggest you never asked for evidence of non-existence. I don't mind explaining myself, I spent a bit of effort earlier. But that I find a dishonest way of discussing. I'm convinced you can understand. [Addendum: in your reply to Jason you ask for evidence for his restatement of yoúr own position; another example of what I find dishonest. You are derailing the discussion by splitting it into ever more subthreads of statements that need to be proved until nobody understands anymore, and then you'll claim we didn't meet our burden of proof. Next you will ask for me to provide evidence for this previous sentence too.] So thank you for reading through my entire response, I value that; but I shan't be repaying the favor.

To me, this line "of everything happening by chance" is just nonsensical. Then, of course, adding it was either chance or god(which is what they mean by ID, they might as well say it) is even more silly. From what I understand, life is inevitable. Given enough time and the right environment, life will find a way. Besides that, we know it happened. From the millions of species that are already instinct to the millions alive today... the odds are about 100%. Besides that, we have testable, repeatable, and observable evidence on how life evolved. There is no good or sufficient evidence for intelligent design. ID isn't science and proponents simply just try to poke holes in evolution.
