Having the Tommy quotes underneath each reason the console’s failure really emphasize the problems of the console and the lies that public relations brought up. For those who are going to start a game development business, use Tommy’s strategy as notes on what NOT to do.
@sensibleperson1979
@sensibleperson1979 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of people with experience running this kind of project have suggested that to Tommy, but since he’s “such a maverick and plays by his own rules,” he had to learn it the hard way, by flopping on his face, in public, all while squandering other peoples money.
@ccricers

@Sensible Person his experience with Video Games Live defying expectations and possibly the big upset where Tommy ended up getting a good deal from the Roblox lawsuit must’ve made him think luck will always push him in the right direction. Plus an overly romantic view of positive thinking that he acquired from Norman Vincent Peale, one of the authors he follows for his philosophy.
@ccricers
@ccricers 2 жыл бұрын
I forgot to add he’s also a fan of "The Secret." That book is a testament to narcissism with its "believe it hard enough and reality will conform to your wishes" themes. So Tommy as the captain will stay within his sinking ship, but denying that it is sinking.

I listened only, so I missed how nicely the magic of the Jenovi juxtaposition. How Tommy was ignoring his own best advice. Which is completely missed in audio only. BTW: this video is 48 hours old: Discussing the Atari VCS with COO Michael Arzt -Some goofy talk of TROLLS by this exec, but they managed to win the console war. Arzt insists his device is a mini-pc. not a console nor an android box. At $300-400, he says "$800 of value costing only $400." I disagree !! I think the masses see his pitch and run out to buy a mini-pc, not his over priced VCS

ATARI has serious positive cash flow from multiple revenue streams & licensing deals that can be used to fund endeavors. Plus…like him or not…Chesnais departed with ATARI having zero debt which makes Wade Rosen’s vision for ATARI possible. Tommy & his IE company have “1” way cash flow…out. I don’t see how this charade can go on much longer. TT’s rocket has been sitting on the launching pad for so long now that it is rusting and falling apart. The Amico has been a disaster from the start. Nobody cares about Intellivision other than a niche of a niche audience of older gamers who think gaming died in 1983. That Tallirico has decided to spin this as a Wii-style success just waiting to be unleashed is unfathomably delusional. It's a scam at this point. This was made clear with his selling of crappy cardboard boxes, cheap coins and a plastic card and daring to call that physical media. It was trying to scrape some cash back from boxes and tat they had made before it all went tits up...a cash grab. Remember when he said it was hardware constraints due to Covid that was holding things up, everything else was ready to go? That was a long time ago now, and was later revealed to be a lie considering the state of all the launch games that are clearly still unfinished. Hell, the UI is still unfinished. This was never about hardware shortages, they just hadn't come close to getting anything finished due to lack of talent, lack of manpower and lack of focus on what they wanted this console to be and who it was for. If they truly believe they can capture the casual market with expensive, underpowered hardware when everyone has mobile phones that play all the casual games anyone could ever need for a fraction of the cost of Amico games, then they were always going to lose their ass on this project.

I was intrigued by the console especially when you compare it to the Atari VCS (Ataribox at the time), Amico began with a more professional presentation in comparison to Atari in which Atari was viewed as the scammers at the time. It was a solid start to the brand with intrigue and not much negativity. (It was either positivity or skepticism) However modern Atari, (some how), actually released the VCS. Meanwhile all that positivity turned even more toxic with each little lie that Tommy & Intellivision expresses. The more lies we were told and the more we are disappointed, the more slimy this whole situation makes me feel.

Right now you got 3 camps interested in the Amico all for different reasons. 1. Original INTV fans who are excited to see reimagined INTV games on Amico. 2. People who befriended Tommy during the last 2 - 3 yrs while he was doing a ton of interviews with small youtube channels. Some of these people were even critical of the Amico before meeting Tommy and becoming "pals". RetroBro is a good example of that. These people would not care about Amico or the games if they didn't form a relationship with Tommy. 3. The critics like you and myself who just sees all the weirdness, drama and flaws surrounding the Amico. The hardware itself, the games, the people working on it and the strange cheerleaders defending Amico and Tommy at all costs just because Tommy acknowledged them.

Now Amico die-hard's are defending Tommy and stating people are idiots and morons that are to dumb to understand the only reason they do not have an Amico in their hands is because the supply chain & chip shortages are holding him back. There is so many things wrong with that notion. Too many to fit into a comment section. One would be. Why would he be sourcing chips so late and after all of the missed launches? Another is that this has been going on for quite some time now and many companies are have placed focus on sourcing their chips from multiple suppliers to keep up with their production. Plus the chip the Amico uses was said to be a chip that the Samsung Galaxy 7 Used. If so that is a legacy chip and shouldn't be in short supply. The chip shortage is only in regards to chips currently being manufactured which the G7 chip is not. I can go on and on. I was wondering what you think about this explanation they are using?

What a mess this thing has become. I've not kept up with all the details but each time I hear about the Amico, it's never good news. And I know producing hardware and building an entire console ecosystem isn't easy but they must be hurting for cash badly if they took the Fig deal and those (impossible to come back from?) terms. At this point the Amico might just be a stone that is being squeezed for blood and I'm not sure there's anything left to give. We will definitely have to see what will happen. I've always maintained that the Amico has the right to exist as any other project, but the absolute circus going on behind it is a major issue. Before they would have people come out and say that the issue is lack of components and the pandemic. Now in 2022 almost all of the Amico's contemporaries have released to date, or are very near release. It isn't fair at times to compare the Amico to say... PS5 or XBSX, but it's a fair to compare it to the Switch, and even the Wii before it. There seems to be nothing in the library that will grab attention aside from the few fans who are really into it. Alternatively, if the marketing hasn't truly started for the console... when are they expecting to do so? Great video brother! Though I am shocked you made another one concerning it. Could have sworn you said you were done on this topic. 👀

I was a kid in the 80s, and even I have zero interest in the Intellivision brand other than maybe getting a compilation of classic ITV games on the Switch.. which I'd probably play for one evening and delete it.

After seeing what you and other people on YT received a few months ago from Amico it's not at all a surprise to see this video. It was VERY clear back then that the Amico wasn't a complete outright scam but it wasn't terribly far away from one. Let's just be frank, it takes a LOT of money to launch a game console with original games for it. I am not talking about a "retro" console that mostly plays ROMs or is a bring your own game sort of deal. I think using the Atari Jaguar and Wii U as examples was very fitting. Another thing working against a launch of the Amico in the US in the near future is the rampant inflation we've been experiencing here lately. This doesn't affect those that pre-ordered an Amico but at least for me due to inflation there simply isn't as much "fun money" available. I'm going to stick with what I already have even as a mature gamer who has played everything from the Magnavox Odyssey & Atari 2600 all the way to present day consoles. In areas where the cost of living is lower (and so are the wages) $200 is still a fair amount of money to waste on something that's clearly DOA.

Interesting take. I do believe this is the last year they can make it without producing any evidence that they have this thing coming out. While chip shortages are a thing, Similar companies have been able to ship products or at the very least showcase software in its near final form to assure people that the system is worth waiting for. Amico is still floundering around with a handful of games in various states of production and we have no indication that it will ship this year.

Amico chip shortages and those that temporarily setback some things in the market aren't the samething. Intellivision gambled that they'd be able to get an old, retiring chipset on the cheap, but didn't anticipate not being able to order enough to keep those sets being produced. They didn't do their homework and it bit them. Now it is just a matter of how long they bleed out until bankruptcy. Amico is dead.

I mean, it's understandable why they took it. There's no other way forward for the company, and they honestly believe this will sell 100million units. At least, that's the most logical reason. For all the other reasons listed, that will never happen. Fig may recoup its money due to the way this is structured, but it's going to be painful, and there's 0 chance the Amico survives without outside financial help or accusation.

This was a very sobbering look into the whole Amico debacle, especially when you look at the current assessments from the Amico's inner circle. Snestastic, aka The Amico Kid is predicting 100M in Amico sales while Jon The Retro Bro, who is Intellivision's Official Public Relations guy (allegedly) still maintains that the Toejam and Earl game is still coming to Amico. My personal opinion is that nobody involved with the Amico wants to give any kind of updates on games like TJ&E, EWJ, Discs of Tron, Kung Fu Master, etc as they know they aren't happening and they don't want the facts to have any impact on the upcoming 3rd crowdfunding effort. Tallarico clearly promised games as being released at launch or shortly thereafter in interviews and now we see many have already to be proven to have not even gotten off the ground in any way. The Amico inner circle are seriously blaming Covid and chip shortages for SOFTWARE not being completed that they claimed was already completed. Their own information provided via Fig showed the system and games were incomplete and had nothing to do with chip shortages in any way. 5 minutes worth of research would completely expose this entire thing.

Hey, I'm still waiting on news regarding Miner 49er. I think the reality is, they want these games to happen, but development contracts for 1st and 2nd party games require up-front cash. Something Intellivion is lacking. So what's the next step? If you believe this system will sell 100million units on name alone, you put everyone off, launch the system, start selling the hotcakes, and continue on developing these pet projects. You already know the elephant in the room though, and this isn't going to happen. For folks like me, it's a bit disappointing as I enjoy most of the games they want to revisit, but it's clear this project is DOA.

@@Jenovi Totally agree. The defenders of Tallarico say that Tommy was just being super positive and trying to get all of the great games on the system that he can and Yes, I can totally understand that logic. I could agree with that logic if it were not for the fact that Tommy specifically gave out time frames for the games. He was legit saying 'at launch' or 'at launch or right after launch' on big name games, even putting some in the order in which they will release. It's one thing to have a wishlist or say you're pursuing a franchise, but once you start ad-libbing in specifics like that while crowdfunding, I have to call foul. Watching those interviews back, it is completely damning.

Don't forget that they're obligated to send 100 demonstration units as per contractual obligations. As for your points: 1) You're not going to beat a literal toy company at their own game. Nintendo has been doing _withered technology_ since before Tommy was born. Before _Mario_ existed. And if they can't beat their own game, nobody will. 2) The best chance the Amico had was Earthworm Jim. With Toejam & Earl off the table, and EWJ nowhere to be found, your next best is... _[Frantic paper shuffling, sound of door opening and closing, peelout.]_ Also, I'd argue that Jaguar fumbled the marketing by condescending to it's userbase. Like the Amico. And the problem with these remakes of old titles is that there are better versions; all of the Amico games look like something you'd find on a mid-2000s shovelware CD, like the ValuSoft Millennium Gamepak Gold. 3) When a gag order would be a massive gain for the system's PR, you know it's already in troubled waters. Comparing his failure to launch the Amico to the struggles of MLK is a special kind of tone deaf, especially when Tommy also celebrates the genocidal pirate Columbus. 4) When German funding grants are seen as a massive boon to the system's development (not even to the tune of a million dollars), this sort of screams problems. Grants which I might add, were gained under the pretence of an unattainable system; the Karma Engine. Which Tommy is on record of having admitted doesn't actually exist. It'd be great if the CFO who has the spare time to try and verbally punch Mark Hamill would release a spreadsheet of finances to the public, instead of picking fights in comment sections. Of course, since great people like Neil Patel and Teeka Tiwari leading the charge (both of whom run predatory "tipster" services where you pay 1k a year to be lead to bunk investements), I'm sure it's all in good hands. Also, scratch and reverse. Republic bought Fig, after the Amico endebited the company for several million dollars. 5) Clubhouse games and a Switch Lite cost less than the whole Amico. This is the main point I've been using as the albatross of price. You get 51 games, many of which are even the same as, if not better outright to what the Amico offers. Who wants to purchase pool alone when most companies include that with several other games? It's a toxic value proposition where the Amico library is _negative._

I’m really enjoying the heck out of the Evercade VS , and funny enough playing Intellivision games on it . Even though the Wii U wasn’t successful for a myriad of reasons it’s still a really enjoyable experience and one of my favorite consoles ever. I love that you compared the Wii U to the Amico . I made this comparison in a video 10 months ago, and was told by an overzealous Amico enthusiast that I shouldn’t be comparing it to the Wii U. It really is doing all the wrong things the Wii U did and none of the right ones. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes. To me it’s completely bonkers that they chose to make a console first and not just make games first for other platforms and then launch a console eventually. Even Nintendo made games for the arcade Before launching the Famicom . I really hope they do get acquired because I would like to see these games on other platforms because I am a huge fan of retro reimagined, but their lineup is just so weak. I don’t see a single game on there that couldn’t be played with traditional controller . I’ve tried again and again to make this thing makes sense. When it comes out I’d like to get one at some point, but I’m not a day one adopter. Heck I didn’t think the Wii was worth buying until it dropped to $150 and had Mario kart Wii included, so this is pretty typical of me. this thing has been so mismanaged. Nobody wants to actually see it fail in spite of what the pro Amico people say, it’s just the things that happen around it are so absurd, and the excuses that keep being made about it are unbelievable. There is no way these things are launching Q1. I just don’t see that happening.

Maybe that explains the news that Intellivision set up a new LLC in Delaware. Transfer all the "assets" to the new LLC in Delaware with its laws that tend to shield companies and its officers from investors/consumers, and then leave all the liability with the old company that declares bankruptcy. It's the new version of "doing a Producers".

Evercade have actually impressed me tbf. When it launched with a load of crappy nes ports rather than proper arcade versions I wrote it off as another rubbish Nes clone system but they have really risen to the challenge of late with a varied catalogue of games including arcade roms. I'm still not interested in it but hats off to them for supporting their system and listening to concerns raised by the community. This Amico thing however just feels like a scam. Retro games require snappy input so they design awkward touch screen laggy wireless controllers. The games also resemble a late 90's PD collection or maybe unity coding demos. And then there's the 'physical' media that's just a fancy download code which is worthless when the servers go dark, which they will. There is no market for this thing, it's too expensive and too technically weak compared to the hundreds of cheap Chinese emulation boxes and far too obscure to even appeal to many consumers. Who can even remember a single intelivision game? It's not like the Atari 2600 with its many well known games and pop culture references. Get the intelivision flashback for 30 quid if you really must play it, at least that has authentic controllers.

I don't think there's much that can be done and I'm not sure I have a ton of sympathy for them in many regards. If the system launches, they all will receive a little something. It's just not likely they will receive back the total investment.

Betting the farm on... an update to one of the best games of 1982, a new project by the always-divisive Doug Tenaple (without Dave Perry involved, afaik), and an "updated port" of a game that's been out for almost two years *right now* that, as you say, is a game in a series that perfectly embodies "niche" is... a bold strategy. But probably not a good one. Especially since the last of those apparently isn't even coming. Big yikes. Great work, as always, dude.

I actually think an Amico variety stream would be quite good on your channel. Those games aren’t worth buying a system for, but if they were ever bundled together on a compilation, might be a laugh to spend a few hours going through.

@@GameplayandTalk Buying the system and all the games individually as digital downloads would cost a fortune, just for the sake of a one off stream, obviously. But if it ever got to the stage where they came out on a multiplatform compilation, I doubt it would be too expensive, and would probably be worth the investment. I’m hoping such a compilation comes out one day. If the system bombs, then it would make sense to recoup some of the loss by releasing the games on other platforms. If they dropped the Amico branding and just marketed it as a sort of re-imagined Intellivision collection, it might do OK.

Very good, level-headed coverage of this mess. I'm hoping the eventual autopsy of the Intellivision Amico is a bit less bleak than its current state. I wanted to get one from day one even though I never expected it to be more than a fun, short-lived novelty, but this has turned into something that makes even the Atari VCS look good.

I never heard of the WiiU until it was long dead. However they marketed it, sure didn’t work. That said the intellevision is so fringe, the amount of us that played it back in 80-84 is so tiny and honestly the lack of RAM/ROM held games back just like the coleco and Atari systems. There is a reason Famicom games are still playable today while other late 70s/early 80s systems are not.

😆 Some folks whose names shall not be spoken, get really hung up on things of small to little consequence, then beat those topics to death. It can make a person seem bitter, unreasonable, and detract from the message. In some circles, there's an unhealthy obsession with this system, not seen since the console wars of the 80's-90's. Skipping along, Shark Shark looks incredibly unfun, and Fox n Forest doesn't look much better than the reskinned Finnagin Fox once I put them side by side (As shown in the video). Not sure why the money was spent doing this.
