For those of you who don't know, tommy was a reviewer and host on Electric Playground (a game review tv show) back in the day. He frequently gave shitty reviews to games I liked and acted edgy and full of himself and then disappeared to do whatever after the show was eventually cancelled. Since then Electric Playground has been revived by his former co host Victor Lucas, who besides not acting like a general twat all the time, seemed to have good taste in games, and generally seemed to be a pretty positive and likeable guy. So yeah, I subscribe to EPN (as it's known on youtube) and I happened to catch a livestream of Vic interviewing Tommy about the Amico. Let me tell ya, the live chat was not friendly to him, it was mostly trolling. Tommy just overall came off as someone selling snake oil. So normally when someone does a livestream they keep the recording up on youtube for people to see in it's raw form. Not this one. The interview was chopped up and put online in a somewhat edited form. And the comments section? None of the negativity featured in the livestream. Gone were the "haters", instead replaced by people praising their new savior the Amico

I will say this, out of all the whacky decisions they made regarding the Amico, that controller was the biggest WTF. Whoever thought that controller design was a good idea should never work in the gaming business ever again. The INTV controller sucked back in 1980 and it'll suck in 2020. A freaking LCD screen isn't going to save the crappy disk pad and side buttons. Have fun playing on those things in long play sessions or even playing something as basic as a platformer. If they don't offer a standard controller option then they are totally beyond help.

Pat and Ian when are you guys going to launch a CU-PODCAST "Retro" Rotary Phone game? You know that people in their mid 40's-50's have nostalgia for the old land line rotary phones we grew up, you could put a 3.5 inch flip up screen on top of the phone handle and you would control your character by inserting your finger into the different number holes to rotating the rotor! Once the rotor returns to its original position then you can make your next move by repeating the process using a different number command! You and the whole family can huddle together and play it with your children and grand children!!! FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!!! BRING BACK TO OLD STYLE ROTARY PHONES TO INTRODUCE THE NEWER GENERATIONS TO CLASSIC PHONE GAMES!!! I thought the same thing. What’s crazy is that the young audience they are trying to attract, might not even confuse those for old iPods, that ref might even be too old. I was like don’t put something that looks like modern technology on top of something that’s party piece are it’s antiquated graphics. I was going to write a long thread about how another Elon Musk wannabe game console developer, gets bent out of shape when someone criticises a console they haven't even made yet. The main criticism being that it doesn't have a huge audience. I was going to point out that even if it exceeds there wildest dreams and sells 10,000 units its audience share is less than a pinhead in the world's biggest entertainment market. I was going to point out that said game console developer has invented a product no one asked for in a market that already has family friendly/party alternatives without having to explain to your friends what a fucking intellivision was. I was going to point all this out, but instead I'm just going to sit here and facepalm until this console dies and goes away.

If you're excited for this just because of Earthworm Jim you should watch the live stream Intellivision did. They talked about how this new game will not be a side scrolling platformer like the old one. They stated they don't want to do anything like the old one because that's already been done before. They kept reiterating that it wont come to other systems because the way it is being designed wont work on them. It sounds to me like this new Earthworm Jim game is going to be some mini-game/Mario Party like game that just has the characters that you remember.

Well.. Your skepticism is well warranted. After all of the promised & failed console promises that were hyped all to hell. I would certainly figure that Tommy would understand that. I for one hope that it is a resounding success, though I am skeptical as well. Given the fact that the only people this would appeal to are probably ( Like myself ) up to their eye balls in debt and others who have kids to take care of & put food on the table. It wouldn't be such a surprise if it did fail because kids today have no concept of the simple games that we grew up with. Most of witch, consisted of action on one screen & literally no story & no end. Kids today would quickly lose interest as they have no knowledge of the historical significance that the Intellivision brought to video games.

I would have bought the Amico and would have loved it. But it’s 30 years later. I was skeptical about the Amico and had mentioned so in another KZbinr’s comments, Tommy Tallarico said he hoped to prove me wrong. After seeing his comments on Twitter and his child like shenanigans when faced with criticism I can honestly say I won’t be supporting this console at this time. As a father of two young children I am always interested in family gaming and am certainly skeptical at the prospects of the Amico. Pat and Ian’s criticisms have been fair, and because they have not chosen to jump on the bandwagon Tommy feels inclined to attack them, which is disappointing. Maybe Tommy needs a refresher in his PR skills. The negativity that is swirling around the Amico right now sounds an awful lot like the Retro VGS. While it’s certainly commendable that Tommy and co. did not use public funds to finance this console, I question his methods of attacking the “hardcore” gamer in the E3 trailer. The hardcore gamer is not tagged always to violent games, but one that needs to latch onto the latest trends as well. Alienating a hardcore fan base will only limit your scope as you will need those types of players to latch on first to attract more casual fans. The Intellivision name doesn’t have the cache that Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony has, so it makes no sense to limit your potential fan base. Every dollar counts for the success of this console and this will not succeed if this is the business model they so choose. And no Tommy, I will not debate you.

Even I, who has had disagreements with both Pat and Ian in the past, could see that their discussions on the Amico have been completely free of hater-speak, or fanboyism. I even went back and looked... this being like the 4th or 5th conversation about the device on the podcast, and not one word was seriously biased, it was realistic. Tommy keeps comparing the device to the Wii or DS... that was over a decade ago! And every innovation Nintendo introduced in those last ten years has outlived it's welcome after just a couple years. The only reason motion controls still exist is because it's found a niche market in VR. The Amico is only a year away, and we've only heard vague plans, and seen a 10 second reel of game footage. And I'll be the first to say this, but I remember watching G4, and interviews with Mr. Tallerico and he always came off as kind of an ass. They reviewed a Castlevania game on his show, and he was complaining about fighting skeletons... in a Castlevania game! Smh

If you watch any Judgement Day episode from G4, Tommy constantly interrupts his co-host, and refuses to believe that differing opinions than his own even exist. If back then he admited to being the same in Kindergarten, there's no reason to believe he's changed now. The burden of proof is on him, because almost nothing has been revealed.

I was and still am genuinely interested in the Intellevision Amico and what Tommy says they hope to accomplish with the system, I even hope that I can pick one up at launch, but I will say explicitly, the way Tommy and some supporters of this project have reacted to criticism and skepticism from this podcast has definitely damaged the good will and reputation of the Amico in my eyes, I support it IN SPITE of this behavior, not because of it, and if Tommy and some of his supporters dont calm down, I will reconsider my interest in supporting this system at launch. Its fine if Tommy wants to keep his cards close to his chest and drip feed out teaser information, but he can't then get upset that other people are skeptical or doubtful of a product they know so little about, when meanwhile Tommy is hyped based on information he doesn't want the public to be aware of yet. Tommy has decided NOT to do a public crowdfunding campaign, so the Amico has nothing to lose by people being skeptical at this point, all he has to do is let the system and games speak for themselves once they are revealed come to market, and if Amico deserves success, the public will respond with enthusiasm when they have the chance to vote with their money. Once again, its okay to do a teaser campaign with a drip feed of information just to keep people in the gaming scene talking, but don't then get offended when people, with so little information to go on, are then skeptical or doubtful of what you've announced so far. If Amico gets it right, (which i think it HAS except for this nonsense) it has the unique chance to be a viable alternative game platform run somewhat as an in-between of the video game console market and the electronic toy market, but this response make me worry if the person at the forefront of the project is so emotional and takes things so personally that it might endanger the work of the veritable all-star team of game industry professionals also working on it. Tommy's always been a hot-head and thats why he was so popular on G4 and Tech TV back in the day, but he just needs to calm down and not take everything so personally, especailly when a lot of these hardcore gamers listening to the podcast aren't the target market in the first place.

People were even skeptical of the NES when they were trying to break ground in the US back in the 80s right after the crash. Even Nintendo had to bust their ass..but they weren't bashing the haters, they let their product speak for itself.

When the Amico was first announced way back when, for some reason I was intrigued and looking forward to it, but at the same time I remember thinking it's not gonna stick around for very long, it'll probably be another steam machine or Atari VCS, just not as scammy. Now I'm just disappointed in ol' Tommy boy

For Pete’s sake, how many fake nostalgia-baiting none-consoles like the Coleco Chameleon, Atari VCS (and now this) do people need to fall for until people realise just buying up an old brand license does not make a game console

I watched the hour stream of Tommy, David Perry, and the OG team of Earthworm Jim. They talk about how different and exclusive the games will be. That EWJ will be 4 players. It seems to me the system is on par with Xbox 360 terms of graphics. The fact theres no dpad or proper buttons... idk we'll see

Tommy be like BRO WHAT IF WE CAPITALIZED ON THE CASUAL MARKET...by making a $200 console that has mobile quality games! Pat and Ian: hey bro, they probably won't buy your $200 console and $$$ on other games if they can play similar games for free or for $0.99 Tommy: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@bmshaven4 жыл бұрын
This system lives or dies based on the games released being either throw-away mobile-esque games, or full-fledged console quality games with reply value, length, etc. If the console does not release games that warrant / require dedicated gaming time and that feel like true console experiences, this thing is dead in the water. Exclusives, like earthworm jim, should help the console succeed. What would be really cool is to see reboots / sequels of classic sidescrollers or new editions of classic 16 bit era sports games. These would be games that groups of people would play together. I would have a total nostalgia-gasm if they would make a new NHL 20/21 but with the old 16 bit engine re-worked. The focus should be on creating / rebooting / remaking classic style games with some newer graphics flair, vs. newer style graphics with some classic gaming flair.

I've seen Tommy do a lot of interviews for the Amico and I've been worrying that he's been left to do what he wants rather than being reigned in by PR. So it's likely to turn into a runaway train. It reminds me of Randy Pitchford doing all the pr for gearbox despite being awful at it and just causing more and more problems.

@busterdog3214 жыл бұрын
That's what they are saying though. It is too far out, but will this be something people are looking for based off a hint of nostalgia vs established companies during Christmas. Also with the limited name power of the system and franchises will this be viable for them to even make?
@AlucardsQuest4 жыл бұрын
There isn't much to judge, that's the problem. Pat and Ian are asking questions and aren't getting any answers. I'm hearing a lot of boasting from a musician turned CEO, a lot of names of industry veterans (very few actually being developers, and fewer of any interest), and an unimpressive games list with 17 seconds of gameplay combined for all of them. There are failed Kickstarters with 10 times more information that what Intellivision has given for Amico. That closed door presentation at E3 seemingly hasn't made any inroads.

After visiting the website and watching the 2-minute trailer, what I see is you're paying $200 for some exclusive mobile games. This machine is far too expensive to compete with the mobile market and far too niche to compete with the big boys at Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. I just don't see where this fits into anything. I get what this Tommy guy is trying to do, but this has epic fail written all over it.
@brnexus74754 жыл бұрын
That is 100% what it is. An overpriced mobile console. Experiences you can find for free or cheap on your smartphones/tablets.
@retro-computing-gaming4 жыл бұрын
Even if the games were good, I'm not sure what incentives would exist for a developer creating "good" games to agree to an exclusivity contract with an unknown startup such as this (because having exclusives is the only way a startup even has a remote chance of succeeding in today's gaming market). And if the dev creates a quality, hit game, they're going to want it on other, more well-known platforms.
@OM19_MO794 жыл бұрын
@@retro-computing-gaming Most of these games are licensed, Irem and G-Mode (Data East) are always selling their IP to anyone, that's their business, there is no real exclusivity to them, they might pull their licenses or claim the "re-imagined" version so they can sell them for other platforms and make real money. Intellivision has the same problem of the Atari brand, their consoles and brand are mostly remembered for licensed games, people bought those consoles for Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Pitfall, Moon Patrol and Burgertime, not for Astrosmash, Shark Shark and Missile Command.
@OzzieAstaroth4 жыл бұрын
I still look forward to it, and hope it sells well, but I can't condone this sort of behavior. Its just a lot of back and forth and it should just stop on both sides. Besides, just addressing it gives them more attention, and that's something Pat & Ian have said they don't want to give them.
@AlucardsQuest4 жыл бұрын
It's not about attention, I think the point is why isn't anyone allowed to give constructive criticism on a new console?

Wow - was gung ho about this console but now pretty pissy they can’t handle criticism. They need to understand Pay and Ian are well respected and can’t act like this. Tommy may be Steven Tyler’s cousin but they need to ‘Dream On’ if they think this is acceptable.
