Maybe go up slowly in wood sizes instead of kindling then tree trunks 😂
@darthkek19534 жыл бұрын
I know, right? But he was sensible enough to show us how to rearrange the logs, use some extra kindling, and blow on it. So he smothered it, but he saved it too. And all new kit is a learning curve... he did fine for his out-of-the-box test.
@GY6outdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wanted to test it with a massive load due to the extra airflow. Maybe used too much LOL you learn as you go with new things...Now you know LOL You're welcome LOL

If you brought this hiking in wet weather it would be money to dry your boots and socks out underneath - would also help you keep your tinder dry when actually starting the fire. 2lbs is a hard sell for most hikers these days though; good thing I consider it a nature rucking! Great channel, keep up the awesome work!

My partner bought one of these for me as a birthday gift.. Two years ago, as he knows I loves me a nice fire when we go camping 🏕. I can honestly say it's one of my favourite things ever. I have just bought a larger one as I've used it that much ( even in the garden at home) that I've burnt a hole in the mesh. The large one is a lot taller and the mesh is 22inch ( the smaller one is 16.5inch). It all collapses down into a small bag just the same, and as a bonus it has 2 mesh liners in it, making it even more of a bargain.
@GY6outdoors Жыл бұрын
You burned a hole through the mesh? Seriously?

That's a pretty cool idea 👍. Don't know if I'd bother w/one but it might make for a good way to move fire around camp. Bring it w/u to the edge of the water while fishin maybe? Take fire over to ur buddies tent?
@THEALAM17793 жыл бұрын
Next, try bring only the mesh. For it to be ultraweight. Maybe we use our tent stake or twigs and stake 4 of it to the ground to hold the mesh 4 courners.
@GY6outdoors3 жыл бұрын

Nice to see with the style of this fire you can pack the logs so close, you can put the big logs on the bottom for embers. They got one now on Amazon that compacts down to 1/3 of the size as this one when portable bc the steel legs interconnect and break apart to pack away. I think the pack dimensions are 9x4 inches. This one is 16.5 inches square they are soon making them in 22 and 28 inches square. Btw can this be used with a ferro rod I heard it can’t bc the steel mesh?
@ianstiehl1994 Жыл бұрын
I take it you're talking about the Skyemac stove. That little thing is awesome. Definitely more practical for longer trips. This would be amazing for winter camping tho
@ChiquitaSpeaks Жыл бұрын
@@ianstiehl1994 idk there’s a whole bunch of them with different weird names
@oldhairpin4 жыл бұрын
You should build the small fire on top of the logs, it then burns down and it wouldn't smoke out.
@britinmadrid5 жыл бұрын
It’s easy to protect the base of a fire pit with a layer of wet sand/earth etc.
@GY6outdoors5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but "Not Leaving a Trace" when you're in the outdoors is the issue this resolves.
@gearscarlos5 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty cool although I think I’d like to see if it can be improved a little with some kind of candle holding attachment you can place underneath Incase the firewood was not dry.
@ianbruce6515 Жыл бұрын
Some places have these damned steel fire rings that you are required to use! The fire is in a hole and doesn't get enough air! Put one of these in the ring and you'll get a better burning fire and more heat! Be great everywhere else, too!
@GY6outdoors Жыл бұрын
Very true.
@jblaze77765 жыл бұрын
How would this do on a windy day???
@callwild13 жыл бұрын
Looks good, packs down small, works well, BUT BUT BUT it burnt through the mesh in only two uses !! Talking to others they have had the same problem. Especially along where the mesh is folded before rolling into bag. Mesh gets hot and breaks along fold. not therefore very robust.
@GY6outdoors3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had an issue yet. Maybe it’s a cheaper knock off version🤔
@ApostleThe3445 жыл бұрын
Idk where youre from but you should come to montana....
@bakerstreet1014 жыл бұрын
If you take that to a campground, I wonder if they would let you use that instead of a fire ring?
@GY6outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Some have! They mainly want a contained fire that will not leave a burn mark on the ground

Nice fire pit, but you used small pieces of wood instead of building to get a good bed of coals to keep to keep the fire going to burn those large logs

as I stated in the video, wanted to see how the extra ventilation would help keep larger logs going without tinder.

English is clearly not the instruction writer’s strong suit. As far as the logs going out-you made a gigantic jump in fuel size! No smaller sticks, just tinder to logs without kindling. Given the burn speed it really exacerbated the issue. Much faster burn speed.
@GY6outdoors5 жыл бұрын
I have gotten this wood to ignite on just the fire starter I used alone in the past, the issue wasn't the heat source, it was a fuel to air mixture problem.
@levinmckoy45592 жыл бұрын
I like your videos, but I guess when you were a kid you didn't become a Boy Scout. The logs are too big at that point. It still looks like it works pretty good.

the problem with something like this is it doesn't keep coals from falling out on the ground. One of the main purposes of a fire pan/fire pit is to not make a big mess on the ground and to "leave no trace". River runners for years have been required to use a fire pan with at least a 3 in. lip to keep beaches clean. Seems the general public is finally catching on and now all these overly engineered spendy items are hitting the market when all you really need is a simple steel galvanized utility pan that they sell at any hardware store. See my vids for a much better option.

Why the hell would you need one of these?? Just make a normal camp fire and cover it up when your done. Maybe I have just never been anywhere that it would ever be useful.
@Nedbryten3 жыл бұрын
Muddy or snowy weather. On stone areas where you're not allowed to start a fire. Also a way to move a fire from one area to another (under a tree for example if raining).. or closer to your friends if moving about.
@jackchivvis41884 жыл бұрын
I have been using a $6 steel utility pan for over 30 years. Lightweight and contains your fire better than this unit. Check out my vids. to see how I do it.

Looks like he’s never actually built a fire.

Nope not a single one…🥴 Learn to listen bud…I added full logs to start it, to see if the increased ability for extreme airflow would let you start a fire without kindling…guess what it worked. Learn to listen before commenting lol
