I love the Northumbrian burr, it's sadly almost extinct. Those old recordings of people born in the 19th century are treasures, on the full recording of Jimmy Marsden - my favourite word that he says is 'terrier'. When practicing it - I realized that it's quite similar to the French R pronunciation, although with a completely different accent surrounding it.

Nice video, this one went a bit over my head though ngl! Maybe in future videos you could try talking just a little bit slower than this one? The Northumbrian R was so crazy, I’d never heard of it before, though of course probably no one has an accent quite like that anymore nowadays, except extremely old people I’d expect! It makes sense that it sounds similar to the Newcastle (or ‘Geordie’) accent as they’re geographically close!

Don't know why KZbin recommended *me* this but I like your voice, and your outfit 😎

Excellent video. Subscribed! I enjoyed how you casually sang the Xhosa wedding song. 7:27 Surely it would've gone from a tapped R to a uvular one..? With regards to the old American R sound, why not listen to some old recordings of speakers born in the first half of the nineteenth century?

My thinking was that the burr would've ultimately evolved from a trill either way, which is why I didn't bring a tapped R up; but then again I don't know nearly enough about the distinctions between the two to make a proper theory. I've not gotten around to listening to any old American recordings yet, but it's on my to-do list so I can figure that sound out. By the way, you left a comment on my follow-up video to this which looked really interesting, but it seems that KZbin has removed it for some reason and I can't find it or read it...you wouldn't happen to remember what you said in it, would you?

@@RheaDawnLanguage You're right - it makes much more sense for it to go from a trilled R to a uvular R. I think of trills and taps as being somewhat interchangeable, which is probably a bad way to look at it. I can't remember exactly what I put in that comment, other than that I linked this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaOcgJqcpclkiaM (go to 32:20). It's an example of the burr in Newfoundland! KZbin comments and likes seem to be disappearing all the time. I left a few comments at once on different videos, so it might be removing some as it thinks they're spam.
