The singer and songwriter Greg Graffin is a professor at UCLA and Cornell university and teaches evolutionary science. The bands lyrics are politically charged and always holds a message that's intelligent and thought provoking. Assured to get your blood pumping and your mind thinking. One of my favorite bands since 1979 and still jamming

This song really is a timeless masterwork. During the bridge (2:55- there are backing lyrics that they should have put up on screen at the same time: In God We trust Because he's one of us Break down Cave in He can redeem your sin Strong heart Clear Mind and infinitely kind You lose We win He is our champion

Regarding "One nation under god," that was actually added to the Pledge of Allegiance in the mid-50s to further distinguish the character of the US from the atheist USSR (and China), which I think adds another dimension to the lyric.

In the early 90's I ran into the guitar player of Bad Religion at a little Mom & Pop music store in Oregon and jammed with him. He was on guitar and I was playing the bass and I had no idea who he was. I was just a stupid High School kid and I heard him playing so I wanted to jam with him cause he was really good. Afterwards I went on and on about how good he was and that he should be in a band because had some serious talent and he just said, "Well thanks" and then he told the owner that he would see him later and as he was leaving I was like, "Well, hey, I really enjoyed playing with you" and he was like, "Yeah yeah, you too" and then he left. Then the owner of the store told me who he was. It just cracks me up imagining what that interaction must have been like from his point of view cause I guarantee you that he still remembers that. It was only after looking back at it that I noticed that there was several times that he was trying not to laugh

You understood it. Well done... :-) Bad Religion often takes on what they feel is misguided religious sentiment in their songs, and "American Jesus" flogs the concept of a nation believing it more blessed by God than other countries. Lead singer Greg Graffin and guitarist Brett Gurewitz wrote the song in response to US President George H. W. Bush's comment that the US would win the Gulf War (the first one) because God is on their side. It's pretty much a satirical view on the general American thought that the United States is the most powerful nation in the world because it is "One nation under God."

I seen Bad Religion for the 6th time in 2021, they were playing with my FAVORITE band Alkaline Trio, they would pass off headlining nights back and forth for the tour. I got pretty buzzed with my boss who I bought her ticket, she hung out with us part time because we were closer to the stage than she wanted to be and we had a bunch of mutual friends who had a good spot. During this song I lost both my shoes in the pit and my phone crowd surfing, some dude hunted me down to give me my phone after he took some epic selfies with the crowd and gave it back after seeing me in the pit and it falling out. After the show my boss was helping me find my shoes in the pit, it was a no go, so she went up to the security staff at the stage barrier as I was putting around and recovered BOTH, as she was giving them back to me Bad Religion came back out and threw out merch and gear, I caught a drumstick and scrounge a few guitar picks, and gave them to her for finding my shoes. Being in a Bad Religion pit with no shoes for like 20 minutes is not easy, I would've loved to have that drumstick, but she earned it bt getting my shoes back for me. If you ever are in Vegas do the Punk Rock Museum, so cool. Got tattooed there. So worth it .

Hey T, loved that you did some Bad Religion. Man, I saw these guys like 25 years ago in Chicago. Brings back memories of better times. This song is so relevant today because I see so much divisiveness over politics, religion, etc.. There is so much BS these days I am glad I am middle aged because the future is scary as hell. I quit watching TV and get most of my news from comedians on youtube like Joe Rogan and Jimmy Dore because all the news on TV and journalistic media is propaganda BS in my opinion. And the BS comes from both sides conservatives and liberals. It seemed there was a time we could agree to disagree with people w/o screaming at each other but civility seems like it has become a thing of the past. It's a shame and I hope at some point that things can turn around because I don't envy the younger generation at the way things are going these days.

i know i'm late to comment; funb fact, they just did their 40 year farewell tour. Which means 1980 is when their first album came out. To me, this is a satirical look at religion itself. Instead of blaming God for the negative and praising him for the good, this delves into all the atrocities that have risen in "his" name, in such a away that if not really paying attention, is easy to miss. "The power that drives the klan" for instance. To me, its a retrospect of what has been done in the name of religion, the exlusionary feeling being on the outside. Plus the egalitarian brim of the nose you mentioned as well, peering down on those lesser beings whom don't believe. The more religious, the bigger the hypocrite.
