So,you like vanilla and chocolate good, good, you are German-Polak, good, good, ex-marine mmm... Did I tell you I really the ARMY? Just kidding, you a great person, god bless you señor Juan. As my buddy says buck up little camper you can do it. You take crap and make ice cream and you have for years. I told a wood master today about you with the restoration of tools. I’ve only had a black and white cookie one time. It was new to me and I had no idea of how it was supposed to taste. I didn’t think it was very special. However, when I was younger, if I got up early on Saturday morning, I could go to the bakery with my father. (This was before Dunkin Donuts!) Many times the lady behind the counter would ask my father if I had been good that week and would give me a free donut! I always looked forward to the Saturday trip with my dad!

I very rarely watch television but when it was being broadcast, I used to watch Seinfeld. It must be 20 years since that show was contemporary and New York has changed quite a bit. I never thought it was an especially important show, just a sitcom; but in retrospect, the writers really had a knack for nailing those cultural touchstones that resonate with people. I think this is the fourth or fifth time where a personal New York experience of yours happens to align with an episode. I would ask if you were a fan, but it was sort of one of those shows that even if you didn't watch, enough people did that you were necessarily aware of it. Black and white cookie... Doesn't seem like conversation fodder that could fill out a single sitcom episode, and here we are referencing it some decades later and I think at least most of us over 40 from the Northeast have a personal experience very similar to the bakery you describe. I can hear the crinkle of that paper, wax on one side and sort of butcher paper on the other. I can smell that butter in the air and the only version of Dusty that smells fresh and inviting. But more than anything, when they hand it to you over that counter and you detect that residual warmth and you know you hit the lotto; this was a truly fresh cookie, you had an especially delicious snack ahead of you that you had to eat the whole perimeter of first to savor that hot center as your dessert so to speak.

You think they are for a lineman or did they come up with that design for the military? Look closer at them, 3 cutters and a long slim design that any size of hands could still get around. 3 cutters in case you bung one up you could still get through that barbed wire fence without a bangkalore(sp?). I'll bet if you could find the same year army denim jacket in a Army Surplus store you will find an inside pocket that will fit those.

I loved them as a small kid and my Dad would buy me one either at the bakery on Merrick Road by the Wantaugh Pky on our way to the beach or in town at DiMonda's Italian Bakery in Massapequa Park. Later as a teen when I worked there I always grabbed a couple on Sunday (along with a dozen hard rolls) when Pat DiMonda (the owner) would allow us to take product home for free, since we were in there at 1-2 in the morning. I have a dessert cookbook at home now, which I bought for the only reason it has a great recipe for them. They're easy to make and if you want the recipe John just let me know.

Just because I made that comment about a tool makers knee, I don't mean to imply any kind of expertise. I do have a universal tool and cutter grinder, but I find it wildly intimidating and I am comfortable re sharpening an end Mill and I can make a lovely lathe tool, but it would take many lifetimes to master that machine. There are whole functions I have never even used. When I get hungry for something that really challenges me, I bring a different type of cutter to the TCG and set my brain to figuring out how best to sharpen it. I think that particular tool is harder to use than every machine tool in the shop combined. That's my distant thought. When I can't effectively use my hands, figuring out how to use that machine to make a shape, even as a mental exercise, it's wonderfully exhausting if you know what I mean.
@terryrogers10252 жыл бұрын
Never heard of black white cookies, look really good though. Headed over to the weekend head shed to take a look. Thanks for the video. Sometimes those small quick jobs turn into little stinkers.🙃
@jpsimon2062 жыл бұрын
You really need to get yourself a tool makers knee! A few narrow grinding wheels, whip up a few arbors on the lathe and run them on the milling machine after you put some Saran wrap down. This is a textbook use, the knee allows you to clamp up any angle you need, and you dress the wheel in the shape you need it to grind. It really helps your brain to be able to see what would improve a tool after using one a handful of times. It has totally reshaped how I "invent", even in my brain. Envisioning how a grind effects things really helps you understand the strength inside geometry and why hard lines are to be avoided at all costs for something to interact with humans and it is the most important thing in something that interests with machines.

I am surprised that you have come around to using the cold blueing fluid so often. You had been pretty hard against using it in the past. Anything with the Maple flavoring on it. Love the Kolache's next. When I was a kid McGlynn's Bakeries were all in Target stores around here. (We are the HQ of Target dwtn Mpls) But the best baked goods my mother knew was out in the countryside. My mother memorized which small towns had good bakeries and we would stop at them on the way up to my Grandpa's Cabin. Love the look of those Utica's, they look like they belong in a 30s-50s movie. Have you ever thought of copper plating your tools as a way to keep rust & corrosion away?

I never considered copper plating tools I think because the color would confuse me! 😂😂😂👍

@@ScoutCrafter What about Nickel plating, then? Or Chrome? I'd think you would really like Chromium as you like shiny things.

Never seen the black and white cookies But I really want to try one. Are they still something they are making? Or is it something in the past?
