hell yeah dude, back to broscience "6 small meals a day" and since some people sleep for 8+ hours it would be a good idea to wake up in the middle of the night and have a meal so you don't trigger that heart disease.

I've been on IF for the past 3 years. In that time I've gone from 250 lbs to 190. I understand it's not magic, but it allows me to maintain a caloric deficit (though I'm now at my goal bodyweight so I'm actually currently in maintenance) easily and simply. I combine my dietary discipline with weight training. I'm currently 64 with no chronic diseases or conditions. My blood pressure is good as are all my blood tests, including testosterone. For me it's simple, realistic, repeatable, and sustainable. I do not restrict food types, just how much I'm eating and when I eat it. I've never felt better. I may be an outlier but my view has always been to do what works for you individually. I am unconcerned with this study. Thank you for your take.

This is the exact kind of “intermittent fasting” that increases your chance of heart attack. The group that ate in the 8hr window DID smoke a lot. So, was it IF or was it really smoking which we already know contributes to CVD? 🤦‍♂️

People I know who participate in Ramadan, where they will only eat when the sun is down, tell me that at the end of the month they're generally heavier than at the start. Because when the sun goes down, they all sit down for copious meals. Many will also get up before sunrise to get a good breakfast in them. The thing with intermittent fasting is that a lot of people seem to think it's all about the time restrictions and the amount of calories don't matter. Since most people who follow a diet usually don't do it like in the rigorous studies, I would say this one may well be a lot closer to the reality of everyday life.

True, despite having less meals in a day, food choices still matter. For me, I eat 2 times a day, and I'm really full after both meals, because they're higher in volume and filling, while being lower in calories. And if people really want to eat whatever they want, they should implement the 80:20 rule. Lower calorie nutrient dense food: tasty empty calories.
@bodrulm1
@bodrulm1 3 ай бұрын
Nah, that's because during Ramadan people tend to overeat on fried foods and unhealthy, calorie dense crap. I eat a massive meal at sunset and again pre dawn breakfast, and I'm 1kg down so far. It's really easy to over eat junk just like any other time of the day/year.

I am fasting for 8 years now. I don't call it intermittent fasting neither I put feeding windows. I just DO NOT eat when I wake up. I eat mostly after 5pm. I also have been doing scheduled 24/48 hour fasts from time to time (ONLY WATER). I should be dead I guess. The thing is do not eat junk or 10k calories in your "eating window" exercise and keep it simple. I really wanna see the breakdown of that study.

Hi Layne, Patrick here 😊. I was just looking over the exclusion criteria and they seem a bit off to me: Men: 8000 k/cal Women: 6000 k/cal This would disproportionatly include those with EXTREMELY high caloric intake which would lead to heart conditions! I would be interested to re analysis the data with a tighter exclusion criteria, say: Men: 3000 k/cal Women: 2500 k/cal Curious to get your thoughts 😊

Not very hopeful that the media and news eventually stop or at least reduce this behavior of sensationalizing everything and anything they can get their hands on, but would be great if they'd take their responsibilities more serious. One of these messages usually takes a TON of good information to combat the misinformation.

The main benefit of Intermittent Fasting or Time Restricted Eating is compliance with calorie restriction. I would add you if you have any sense you are eating mainly unprocessed foods during your eating window. I have dropped my weight from 96 kilos to 82 kilos and combined with exercised got rid of hypertension with no drugs. I had a medical on Monday and my doctor was pretty impressed by my fitness for a 62 year old man.

From my viewpoint, this large-scale long-term study actually provides a positive scientific proof that 8-hour time-restricted eating schedule is very beneficial to many people with chronic diseases and greatly reduces their high risk of death from cardiovascular disease as explained in the following: 1. Thanks to this large-scale long-term study on the impacts of time-restricted eating schedule on the risk of death from cardiovascular disease (VCD). It is a large-scale study involving 20,000 US adults. It is a long-term study because the study participants were followed for a median length of 8 years and maximum length of 17 years. 2. For convenience of discussion, we refer to this group practicing 8-hour time restricted eating as Group B and the other group who do not practice 8-hour time restricted eating as Group A. 3. In this large-scale study, Group A has 11,831 people and Group B has 414 people. 4. With 414 people in Group B, their health conditions at the beginning of the long-term study are not all identical. Some may be normal healthy people, but many may have certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, arthritis, insulin resistance, autoimmune diseases, etc. (Unfortunately, the published news article does not provide information on the initial health conditions of these 20,000 participants at the beginning of the long-term study.) 5. It is not easy for people to stick to the 8-hour time-restricted eating schedule for 8 years or more. It is known that about 38 percent of beginners of time-restricted eating schedule drop out of the program in the first 12 weeks. It requires a very strong willpower for a person to stick to such restricted eating schedule for 8 years or more. In other words, these large number of people in Group B who can stick to such 8-hour restricted eating schedule for 8 years or more are NOT the regular normal people. This Group B of people are special. The most common reason in this Group B of special people is that many of them have certain chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, arthritis, insulin resistance, autoimmune diseases, etc. 6. Many of these people with chronic diseases know that over long term their chronic diseases can lead into horrible consequences such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc. that can kill them quickly or kidney failure/dialysis, or blindness, or amputated leg, or serious disability, or dementia, etc. 7. Many of these people with chronic diseases also know that the medications for treatment of these chronic diseases all have long lists of undesirable or nasty side effects. 8. Many of these people with chronic diseases try hard to avoid such medication treatment and look hard for alternative, natural methods to improve their poor health conditions. 9. Many people in Group B are practicing 8-hour time restricted eating hoping to improve their poor health conditions. 10. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) for diabetic’s patients is higher than that of normal people by 200 % to 400 %. 11. The risk of death from CVD for obese people can be as high as 350 % over that of normal people depending on how fat they are over the normal body weight. 12. The life expectancy of diabetes patients and obese people is shorter than that of normal people by up to 10 years depending on how bad are their diabetes or obesity. 13. Similarly, the risks of death from CVD due to other chronic diseases are also much higher than that of normal people in Group A 14. For those who are healthy in Group B at the beginning of the long-term study and stick to the 8-hour time restricted eating for 8 years or more, their risks of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) at the end of long-term study would be better (lower) than that of regular normal people in Group A because of the beneficial effects of 8-hour time restricted eating. 15. However, the results of this large-scale long-term study indicates that the Average Risk of death from CVD among this large Group B is 91 % higher (worse) than that of Group A. Such result indicates that the normal healthy people are minority in Group B and that Group B is dominated by people who have certain chronic diseases at the beginning of the study program. The majority of people with chronic diseases dominates the Group B such that the Average Risk of death from CVD of Group B is 91 % higher than that Group A instead of lower than that of Group A. 16. In other words, if Group B were dominated by healthy people without any chronic diseases, the Average Risk of death from CVD would be better (lower) than that of Group A because of the beneficial effect of 8-hour time restricted eating for Group B. 17. Notice that the average risk of 91 % is substantially lower than the high risk of 200% to 400% of patients with various chronic diseases. This means 8-hour time restricted eating schedule for 8 years or more is quite beneficial to reduce the high risk of 200% to 400% down to average risk of 91 %. 18. Additional important factors contributing to this 91 % higher risk are: (I) 27.1 % of Group B are smokers whereas only 16.9 % of Group A are smokers. Even though Group B is practicing “8-hour time restricted eating”, if these 27.1 % of Group B cannot stop their smoking addiction, these people are also likely to indulge in unhealthy high-carbohydrate foods and high sugar foods and Beveridge which are delicious but are strong contributors to their worsening chronic diseases such as insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity. They may be also indulging in other delicious junk foods which are also strong contributors to their chronic diseases. Therefore, the 91 % higher risk of death in Group B may be due mostly to their addictions to smoking and delicious junk foods and Beveridge. (II) The average Body Mass Index (BMI) of Group B is 29.9 whereas the average BMI of Group A is only 28.5, i.e., Group B is fatter than Group A, (III) 21 % of people in Group B died in the study period, whereas only 13 % of people in Group A died in the study period. (IV) These data confirm that Group B people are sicker than Group A people on average. 19. The fact that the average risk of death from CVD of Group B is still 91% higher than that of Group A indicate that “8-hour time restricted eating” alone is still not powerful enough to reduce (improve) the Average Risk of Group B further down below 91%. Additional changes in Life Style such as better diet, more exercise every day, effective stress reduction, more effective weight-loss program, good sleep every day and suitable 1 to 3 days of fasting, are also needed to achieve an optimal program. With such optimal program practiced over long term, it is possible to reverse and to heal many kinds of chronic diseases such that the average risk of death from CVD of Group B can be as good as or even better (lower) than that of Group A. 20. Highly experienced and knowledgeable doctors (MDs) in this field, such as Dr. Boz (Dr. Annette Bosworth, M.D.), Dr. Jason Fung, etc. have been offering online training programs and classes for many people to learn and to be trained on the optimal program to improve their poor health conditions more effectively. Many graduates from these training programs have demonstrated that their chronic diseases have been reversed and healed by such optimal programs. Many experts in this field have been attending their annual conference/Summit to exchange, to share and to learn from each other on their knowledge, experience and discoveries in this field. Sing Lin

Let's be real without Fed Wilson wouldn't have sold a lot of pro staffs. I'm one of the few players I run into that play with a one hander. Younger players aren't concerned about finding a stick that is more maneuverable on the backhand side or feels like butter through the slice, they are coming over the ball most of the time. Also racket makers are not looking to just be a niche, they want to be the next babolat... or yonex... so they will make rackets that alot of players will buy.

As readers of any research outcome, just be mindful that research data can be wrong due to small size data or has the potential to be manipulated or sometimes there is weak relationship between IF and heart problem but being magnified.

Well. I can share my family's case. My father in hes late 20. And thirdeas skipped breakfast every day and drinked coffee instead. First meal was around 2-3pm. Every day for link 14 years. That was hes lifestyle. He wasn't fat. He didn't have diabetes ... One day he got hearth attack, then after that another one and they had to make him 4 bypasses in the hearth. Is that the reason I have no clue but its interesting.

2 other theories, because I don't think anyone is accidentally restricting to less than an eight hour window unless they're leading a pretty stressful life.: 1. People intermittent fast because they're unhealthy in the first place. They need to use weight and it usually doesn't work. 2. People who intermittent fast tend to eat high fat diets.

I agree, I don't think fasting has any significant benefit or harm, especially a 16:8 schedule as in the headlines of that study. Before food was so abundant, people ate with such schedule without choosing and they weren't falling dead like flies left and right. This is on the extreme side of argument, truth is somewhere in the middle.

Makes total sense … restricting your eating window is foolishness and nonsensical… as we age we produce less stomach acid so smaller frequent meals will be digested better… also your body adapts to whatever you do … infrequent fasting is helpful fasting all the time is stupid

I think there may be some logic in this study if ppl eat bad diet, smoking, not exercising, not sleep enough and have elevated insulin, oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. In that case intermittent fasting won’t help I believe, it may help you to gain back your health with restricting eating and eating proper diet with less sugar, processed food and more bioavailability food like red meat, in that case body go in recovery and intermittent fasting is extremely beneficial to our body. I may be wrong but this is my opinion for now.

This was a questionnaire survey and lots of the people smoked and drank alcohol frequently. It didnt mention their activity level either. When I was a kid we did "IF" without doing IF. I woke up,usually didnt eat breakfast,went to school,ate lunch,came home and did homework. After homework,went outside and played till dinner time. Then played till bed time. Repeat the next day. Didnt drink,smoke,and MOVED ALOT! Still kinda do that and Im mid 50's and feel good. But thats just me.

I know people are excited to report their findings from a study by putting out an abstract. The Press who is not interested in quality studies but in causing a stir, and with the study authors knowing this, i feel the latter acted irresponsibly. Of course they aren't the first nor the last.
