What’s the difference between an intern, a resident and a fellow!?
There are many things to remember, understand and analyze in med school. But figuring out the different terms to refer to a doctor from a physician, resident, intern and attending can also be an added confusion.
We will tackle three of these terms and have a clearer understanding of the key differences between a new practicing doctor, a resident doctor, and a doctor beyond residency years.
It’s not very difficult to grasp for both med school students and pre-meds. Yet, it definitely helps to get the terms down and get a better understanding of the path that you, a colleague or a superior is going in their M.D. journey.
Let’s clear up “Intern,” “Resident” and “Fellow” with examples, in this episode of the TMJ show!"

Hi friends! I hope you enjoyed this video on the difference between an intern, a resident and a fellow!! What do you want to learn about being an intern, a resident and a fellow? Are there other terms that you would like me to cover? Where are you currently at and where would you like to be in your M.D. journey!? Let me know along with any questions you have below!

As someone whos highest medical training is EMT and likes to watch shows like Scrubs, and have run across these terms all the time but never really knew the differences too well, this really helps clear things up with who's who at the Hospital and the hierarchy and all that jazz, in a nice clear, straight to the point video

I just passed my 11th year fellow status. I had no clue until I looked back on my records. I been at my own practice doing psychiatric work for a while now. I never had a graduation, never really had a stopping and starting point it all just "flowed" My first year was in medicine, outpatient consultations and therapy.

Thank you so very much! I'm a medical interpreter and I had idea in regards to "interns", "resident" and somehow, "attending", but that "fellow" thing always baffled me and I really never knew where to put them when it comes to category, to get an accurate rendering, again, thank you!

In the Philippines, an Intern is a fresh graduate from medical school but not yet a licensed physician and a year of Internship or Postgraduate Internship is a requirement to sit and take the Philippine Medical Licensure exams while a resident is a licensed physician on training in various specialties while a fellow is a postr-esidency training in various sub-specialties.

In my country (SA), an interns is someone who just graduated from medical school but is not licensed yet. 12 months of internship in the core clinical rotations (GS, IM, EM, OBGYN and pediatrics) must be completed before applying to residency programs. I wonder, does this qualify as "previous GME" required by some residency programs in the US?
