The best method is what you’re using to hold the test rig together. They held up through ALL the tests. 👍

Surprising results and a well done test on your part.

Ha! My FIRST thougt before even watching the video was "I hope he does Nord lock washers in this test". Thanks for the awesome content!

I think star lock washers (and spring washers) are designed for a minimum torque...enough for the hardened washer edges to plastically deform and bite into the nut and clamping surfaces to react the loosening torque. If the lock washer edges don't bite into the surface, it can't lock.

Extremely interesting results. I didn't expect all of them to fail. How about using thread locker?
@HacksbyDadАй бұрын
Thanks! I plan to test threadlocker too. 👍😎

The only application where I use " shakeproof" washers is on electrical connector studs

Compare the Nord against ribbed lock washers.

Are you talking about Belleville conical washers?
@timberhitchllcАй бұрын
@HacksbyDad ribbed lock washers and made in the same shape as Belleville washers but have ribs stamped into both sides.

Although I enjoy this channel and the testing you do, I found this to be of little value. The 6 lb-ft of torque may be the reason all failed. That’s far, far below the recommended torque spec. Even 10 lb-ft is way too little. The low torque makes the whole exercise of dubious/no value. Why did the nuts loosen? Because they were never tight to begin with. Running the tests using the recommended torque value for the bolts would take longer, but would give meaningful results.

Thanks! A properly torqued nut and bolt would take forever to fail in my test rig. 😁 10 ft-lbs holding a plain nut for 10 min and failing in seconds with the internal, external, and flat washers surprised me.

He didn’t want this test to go on for days. He has a real day job. I’m sure he would like to see other people’s similar tests.

@@HacksbyDad "and failing in seconds with the internal, external, and flat washers surprised me." The teeth are supposed to actually bite into the material, that can only happen if the material is soft enough and the torque is high enough. If not then the teeth just reduce the amount of contact-area and therefor friction and therefor the amount of grip. It would also be interesting to know what kind of abuse your test rig deals out, compared to what the washers are designed to deal with.

Thats how these washers are ment to be used, fingertight fastened gettin smashed to the multiverse
@HacksbyDadАй бұрын
Fingertight… LOL! 6 ft-lbs is much more than fingertight. Try loosening a nut or bolt that has been torqued to 6 ft-lbs with your bare fingers. 👍😎
