I absolutely love the video. I definitely need some panels for my scout

Straight up EXCELLENT!!! I am amazed at how you can see how the panel should lay out and what needs to be done first to start the process!!

Another great one Brian. Nice to see stainless, never worked it to shape before. Lots of ways to do things, first thought was English Wheel to raise the shape. Sounds like you're in a better mood. Classes sound like a great idea, you're a good teacher. Cheers

My english wheel frame is finished, just making the upper wheel and lower anvils now. Won't be long before it is up and running and I will show you the features soon.

The Scout 80 and 800 are the same body style. They didn’t really change the bodies until the Scout II came out. I had a Scout 800 with the V8 many years ago. I pulled down a two car concrete garage with that thing! Low gears and torque make a great combination.....

I have had some scouts in the past but never kept one. They sure are a sturdy vehicle.

That panel will outlast the vehicle now ! As you say, stainless is a whole new world of fabrication, but with the tooling you have it just means a different approach, will you give it an etch prime before you paint ? although the D/A finish will give you a good key. Thanks for posting, Chris B.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
After an 80 grit scuff I put on epoxy primer and it bites into the stainless perfectly . After that regular primer and paint.

I have been collecting, buying, ,selling, trading, tools and equipment since I was about 14 years old. I have scoured the USA and beyond to get the tools necessary to fabricate the parts I make. couldn't find a power hammer so the one you see me use I built myself, and am now just finishing up a new english wheel design. More to come so keep watching. Brian

Hey Brian - thanks for the video. I will be doing my scout's rockers in the next while and this really helps. I notice a couple of others mentioned using the english wheel with rubber band to put in the rocker curve. If you had your wheel up and running, would you wheel first before putting the in the edge flanges or after? Thanks for the tips!
@metalshaperJeep3 жыл бұрын
You can wheel it, hammer it, or anything else you can think of to get the proper curve you want, depending on what you have available. I usually like all the flanges on first then put some shape into it.

I don't have any patterns for the early jeepster but if you have any old sheetmetal or drawings, or photos I should be able to make the parts you need. contact me anytime at metalshaper@comcast.net Brian

Hey Brian. Great to have you back on line and bubbling along. Just wondering, have you ever though about fabricating parts and sheetmetal Etc for old bikes like Indians and Harleys? I would've thought that would be right up your street?

I can make parts for anything out there, just need patterns or drawings to work from. Have made a few old motorcycle parts in the past but it never really took off. Making some scout and FJ parts in addition to Willys parts now. Always looking to expand. Brian

Awsome work, but I have one simple question. Can you weld stainless to mild steel safely? I know that as long as it has above 13% of Cr it's rustproof, but welding these together kinda "mixes" them. I read that making stainless patches will only shorten the time before you start to see rust again.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
I weld stainless steel to mild steel all the time with 312 welding wire. If you see rust again in a short time it would be because you welded to rusted steel or you didn't prep and prime/paint the area correctly. Never had trouble with stainless steel and mild steel mixed together.

problem with stainless is that your welds will rust out like mad

never had a problem with rusting on stainless welds attached to plain steel. Proper prep, primer and paint take care of any problems.

As you probably know, that curve in the panel could have been done with a rubber band on that English wheel you are building
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
I have my wheel frame finished, and am working on the anvils now. Will be nice to have a wheel next to the power hammer for jobs like this. Been running a hammer for many years so it was also easy to raise the center section, without destroying the rest of the panel.

What does something like that cost the customer?
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
Depends on what the customer wants, plain steel, stainless steel, heavier gauge steel, etc.... everything is custom built by hand.
