If I can't blow up a building under it and start the drive home within 30 minutes I don't want it. I also want it to be chargeable with an extension cord. Back in the day we owned a Scout Terra with a 345 cu in V-8. When you punched that thing it got scary fast. The top was fiberglass that came off, convertible pick up. We used to park it at the baseball field, throw a blanket on the hood and sit up there leaning against the windshield to watch the games. We'd do the same at drive-in movies. Never dented the hood. Had a lot of fun with that truck but parts started getting hard to find as Scouts were kind of Frankensteins and used parts from other makes.

They were built to rust, unfortunately. Very bad design in the wheel wells and any place mud/water could get slung into. The saddlebag tanks would rot out, rockers, etc. Pretty sad. I have heard that IH stored their steel outside too, which of course was not galvanized, especially on the earlier variants. By the time they left the factory, the process had already begun!

International stopped selling the Scout because the US EPA mandated that emissions levels must be a calculated average across the whole line of vehicles and where the big automakers had compact cars along side of pickups, International had only "light duty" vehicles (trucks). The Scout II survived for a few years in that the emissions were less restrictive to higher GVW rated vehicles and those numbers by IH where increased with heavy duty axles until the standards were applied again to higher GVW vehicles. It is a bit full circle they return as electric as an emissions play. There was a lawsuit case - International Harvester Co. v. Ruckelshaus, 478 F.2d 615 (D.C. Cir. 1973) over emission rule changes.

@glenmallory9982
@glenmallory9982 Жыл бұрын
What killed the scout was quite simply they never updated it. They just tacked on minor changes from 1972 until the end in 1980. The last Scouts made were in 1980 for the Post office fleet order. Basic model 2s with 4wd. This emissions discussion is off target. IH went to making the heavy duty suspension package standard because by the mid 1970s if the gross vehicle weight rating was over a certain number you didn’t need light duty emissions equipment. No catalyst no single exhaust on the V8s. True dual exhaust. For 1979 that law was changed. No way could they put 8500 lb springs on the Scout to keep the engines as they were. The emissions gear strangled the engine’s performance. They weren’t exactly screamers before, but after the change even the 345 v8 was as slow as a six banger Jeep of the same year. The heart was ripped out of a now ten year old design. Endless strikes and bad labor relations led to crappy quality control. The bodies fell off on some vehicles in three years. I know , we owned several over the decade. IH upper management always treated the Scout as the servant stepchild of the truck line. Just a great idea and a good design never given what it needed to be a big seller. Die hards loved them and still do. It’s a Baja race winner and the Jeep beater of 1977. By 1980 the bloom was off of the entire company and bankruptcy was coming. Tractor division was sold to Tenneco . The scout factory was shut. The big truck division was the only one making money, so Navistar was created out of the ashes of IHC. But this electric VW is not what us old timers want to see. Ciest la vie.

Growing up in rural Iowa in the 60’s I spent a lot of time at the local IH dealer with brand new tractors, combines, miscellaneous farm implements and, yes, even a couple brand new Scouts parked outside. The old Scouts, Travelalls and IH pickups weren’t appreciated so much in their day as the ride and handling characteristics left much to be desired and the local tractor shop wasn’t perhaps the best venue to market and service them.

From my experience, every single year of international scout parts, even sometimes during the same model year, the parts, interchange between the same models of international scout are horrendous. I think one of the reasons people didn’t completely love them is because their parts were not uniform at all, one model would have some things that other models didn’t I’m not sure why this was but it made it very hard to fix any problems because even with the year make and model and submodel you could not get the right part the first time around

Ih was a VERY cheap brand, it was a workers brand, they used the same doors on basically every model of truck from 1/2 ton to over 2 ton trucks for decades. They even tinkered with the idea of a plastic body, but it would have been too expensive. They settled with stamped sheet metal and made all the surfaces flat as possible to keep costs down, They cut down their v8 into a slant 4 to save money on making a new engine, so you could use the v8 and Comanche i4 parts interchangeably. They offered over 100 different sub models, they had everything, like post hole doggers, PTOs left or right hand drive, 3 point hitch, winches, etc. They even sold "half scouts" which depending on what you select is basically just the bare minimum, chassis, drive train front end but to doors, box or sides. Being a kinda cheap workers brand quality control may or may not have been good or even existed but most parts between most IH trucks are interchangeable.

Jeeps were a hot item Ford and International wanted in on that market. but the Scout, and the Travel, all and International pickups. were some of the toughest light duty vehicles ever produced. my father had a 1974 Scout II for many years drove it constantly. and in all that time it only needed a shift cable replaced. and I had a 1974 International 3/4 ton pickup. and all the time I had it I had to replace a reverse band in the transmission. if Volkswagen reintroduces the Scout it won't be under the International name.

If these companies would go back to the root of why these vehicles were so popular, it would help. I owned binders in the past. I owned and sold several Scouts. The best ones had the v8 instead of the inline 4. If you took the 4 cylinder and added new turbo tech like the Silverado 1/2 ton, you would have a good base . Then they could add a plug in Hybrid system to it to both meet new laws and give us a portable power plant for the Bush or off-road wilderness. The old Scouts were basically 1/2 ton rated, and that's why we liked them over Jeep CJs. The gearing had a proper low range in it. I drug logs with mine to clear trails. I could bury to the axles in mud , put it in 1 st gear in low range and just churn my way out. At the end of the day, I could open the doors, hose it out, and not worry about it. They better not turn it into another Mall crawler, or it will be short-lived. The other points of Scout were simplicity and toughness. If they turn it into an EV it better be like a Rivian at twice the range and half the cost.

@@MarcoAtlarge What would be awesome is if they could bring back the jeep 242 or even put the 4 cyl Cummins in it but this world wants to go all EV. They don't care what you or I want. I have owned a lot of jeeps and the 4.0 L is an awesome engine and built like a little tractor motor. I always liked the slant 4 cyl Volvo and the Mopar slant 225 motor. All of them were pretty much bullet proof but the 345 V8 was a good torquey motor. Today I would go with something similar to the 4 cyl. turbo found in the Chevy Silverado. That motor is a beast for it's size and the torque curve mimics a diesel. It could be built to be kind of multi fuel. If they want to go zero emissions fine let's have an engine that can handle high altitude and burn Alcohol, CNG,RNG, H2,syn fuels, Ammonia, whatever. Add in a PHEV system to it and pump out hundreds of thousands. I think our days of a stupid simple off roader are gone.

The early ones had 4 cylinder engines which were 1/2 of IH's truck V-8's. IH also made pickup trucks and large SUV's (Travelall) until the early 1970's. The SUV's were like the Chevy Suburban and popular with those towing trailers. The Scouts were somewhat popular, especially where they sold trucks and farm equipment. They were a larger alternative to the Jeep vehicles of the time. VW has long owned the MAN brand heavy truck and bus line vehicles and more recently Scandia. IH Truck was bought by VW related company (Navistar) as the brand has lost much of its standing for medium to heavy trucks due to a horrible failure as to their diesel engines to try to make them work at government mandated lower emissions without DEF. They also lost sales to Paccar (Kenworth, Peterbuilt), Volvo (including Mack) and Mercedes-Benz owned Freightliner.

They weren't an alternative, they were the alternative to the jeep, they literally did anything, they had PTOs, winches, were dually, were diesel, had i4s, had v8s, you could buy the scout with just the grill and the drive train and chassis, people put post gole diggers on them, garbage hoppers, dump beds, conveyor belts, complete armored bodies, forest firefighting which included duals, rotating beacon and a complete external cage. They were originally made to fill the market and demand for off-road fun vehicles which previously was only the jeep, they made it simple and all it needed was a slant 4 and 4x4 to get it places, it became the original Sport Utility Vehicle.

I love the 1961-71 first line Scouts, and have wanted one since I was on the eve of getting my first car, but between I-H telling us "Shift For Yourself" (No automatic until the waning years of the superior first gen, and that most rusted their way back into the Earth!) I didn't stand an ice cube's hedged bet in Hell, and now, they're as beloved as Corvettes, and priced like a 'Vette! NOW, I would give up my hobbies, girlfriends, EVERYTHING to scrimp and save for the new Scout in the offing. But I'll only attempt it PROVIDED we get the retro styling that was planned, not the ConAgra inspired lines I'm seeing! AND, either the electric vehicle's ease of usage (Something Ford as I hear is getting a bum rap for) is not Captcha inspired (Like Ford's is) and EVERY bug worked clean out of the design and corporate technology, or I'll spend instead on a concours sixties Scout restoration that may be gas hungry, but I'll be a content good sport buying tankloads of Gulf petrol, and make a decades old dream come true. It is up to Volkswagen, who I couldn't give better scoring to for even WANTING to bring back the Scout; just give us the Scout "People's Car" as close as we remember it. We drive a mean bargain, but we're honest!!! If not, I'll hew to Matchbox cars.

In 1975 a new US law called Corperate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) killed the Scout, because Internationeal Harverter only produced trucks and not high fuel ecomomy passenger cars. This is what killed the Scout even though the Scout had the the highest fuel ecomomy with the 2.5 liter 4 cylender engine.

I grew up in FT. Wayne, Indiana where the Scouts were made. IH had a pretty big presence there. Loved Scouts as a kid and hated seeing the line shut down...which put a LOT of people out of jobs. My Grandpa only drove IH pickups until he couldnt get them anymore and bought a Ford F250 in '78 or '79. Bringing back the Scout is a great idea! However, if they do it like this, it will likely be a total failure. EV is not the answer for the future of transportation, especially trucks 🤦‍♂️.

Scouts are farm equipment, also known as Cornbinders. I own a 65'. EV is a non starter out west as an off road vehicle or an overlander. If VW wants to capture the true essence of an IH Scout for the future, it needs to be HY-bred style. Having to park at an electric plug out in the middle of no where... yeah.. just not going to happen. Looks like they're going for the urban market or local cruiser.
