My neighbor's 1975 International Harvester farm workhorse doesn't have all its horses...
Out of 4 cylinders, 2 are very low on COMPRESSION.
What could cause two neighboring cylinders to lose compression?
Upon teardown, it becomes clear that my initial diagnosis was not accurate...
Some more parts may be required!

Machinist here. As the valve seat and the valve sealing face wear together, the valve moves towards the spring end removing the valve lash and making clearances tight. Most people expect to find excessive lash on a worn engine, but it's usually the opposite. I think it needs a good old fashioned valve job. It'll be good for another 10 years.

So the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm dont wear? Or its not significant enough wear to cause expensive valve lash?

I was also expecting to find a bad head gasket or a cracked head or block. But when the gasket was revealed, and it wasn't any of those. I'm thinking, uh oh! Do we maybe have bad valves? Sure enough, at least one bad valve. And zero lash on another? Nice find Ivan! But what caused the zero lash on the cylinder 2 valve? That may require farther inspection. The owner of this beast was spot on when he said, he wants it to run right. So, he's taking it to a pro.

Always perform the complete procedure. Air up all cylinders, individually of course, then check and note the source(s) of leak (intake, exhaust, crankcase) and approximate volume of leak. It can save the amount of future head scratching. A stethoscope helps tremendously, it allows you to hear the leak. Large leaks sound different than small leaks and being able to tell them apart helps in identifying the most likely cause of the problem on a very worn engine that will have leaks at all 3 locations.

I love the engine is so approachable you can re attach the head and start the engine just it to check if a valve lash is the problem. Reminds me of my old 62 Ford Falcon, where it took about 1 1/2 hours to R&R the head gasket. The Car Wizard replaced a head gasket on a Mazda CX 9 Skyactiv engine and it took 16 hours.

I'm not surprised that it needed a valve job, but I'm surprised it's not a diesel when it's from the 70's. One thing to consider also is that it's a cast iron head and that means that the valve seats are usually milled directly into the cast iron. If you run lead free then they wear faster.

I'd say that the valve lash being too tight has caused that valve to burn out because 29 years ago when I was doing a small automotive course my teacher was telling us how the valves will get burned if the valve lash is too tight. The valves get held open which causes the valves to overheat & burn out,it also causes a loss of compression !

Purely mechanical, for a change :-) A bit of a surprise, with two independent problems giving the same fault. Not sure of the constraints, but once the head gasket was replaced recently and problems returned with the gasket looking good, I would review / service all valves, before reassembly, to avoid a comeback in another cylinder. Those front head bolts a bit loose in the problem area, may indicate previous work was a rush job (farm equipment is always under time constraints, as things tend to fail just when they are needed).

Ok Ivan I have done quite a few engines including manufacture. First this probably did not have the head tightened after 20 hrs. This can cause oil burning and oil in the coolant. Second this engine would have been designed for leaded fuel and will suffer from pocketing. The head will need to have stellite valve seat inserts fitted, at least exhaust. Most engine machine shops will do this. Or he can use an additive. All the old Land Rover engines we do have this problem.

Still wasn't showing charging on the gauge. Took the gen off and went and had it tested. Tested good. Put it back together still the gauge shows a draw. Finally I pulled the post off the battery with it running. It's charging since it stays running. the gauge must be skewed.

Out of interest, the "mis-diagnosis"... you checked cylinder 1 at tdc and assumed that the leak was via the head gasket when in fact it was leaking through the exhaust manifold and out via both the exhaust and the correctly open exhaust valve on cylinder 2. If you'd taken cylinder 2 to tdc and then tested, you would have seen the leak on the intake manifold but not coming out via cylinder 1 nor the exhaust manifold, indicating no head gasket issue? So moral of the story to be taken as a learning outcome is it's worth checking all the suspect cylinders independently and not just assuming a connection? Realistic outcome is that the whole lot needs to come off anyway though, so it doesn't really change anything, but if you were ordering parts relative to the diagnosis, a few mins extra on that cylinder 2 could have potentially led to just opening the cover and adjusting two rockers had cylinder 1 had the same adjustment issue on the exhaust valve. I have an old gas forklift I'm trying to get running as a project to learn more about engines and have taken a lot of interest in engine related content. Definitely down a rabbit hole! I come from a mindset where an oscilloscope is more familiar to me than the mechanical side, so I love the idea I can combine my existing skills and knowledge in diagnosis to overlap into mechanical diagnosis. Love your content. I know it is no small effort to produce these videos while working on the given vehicle, so thank you!
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Жыл бұрын
I would first check for signs of coolant loss or system pressurization. if none found next valve lash issues, certainly no hydraulic lifters/adjusters on there and they may have valves tight from wear and possibly running hot/lean on that end of engine. maybe worsened by rust on valves/seats from exhaust not being covered, possible even rodent nests(urine corrosion) on. so I guess a leak-down test on those two cylinders would be a great first step(assuming gasoline engine, which that is)

Valves and combustion chamber coal black = ignition off time or the engine is using oil. Perhaps bad piston rings or worn pistons? White valves = bad mixture (too) or timing is off. Even more likely a lack of lead. But it could also come from coolant.

Why do you think that when there's lash between the valves at cilinder 1 there's also lash at cilinder 2? That's normally not possible.. when both rockers are moving on cilinder 1 you can adjust/check cilinder 4, when the rockers at cilinder 4 both moving you can check cilinder 1 clearance, when the rockers at cilinder 2 both are moving you can check the clearance at the walves at cilinder 3 en when the rockers both are moving on cilinder 3 you can check cilinder 2.. always on 4 cilinder engines

I would look at intake valve #2 and its all the seats very carefully. I'm thinking possible valve recession in the head even on the intake seats. Old engines didn't use hardened valve seats and were made to run on LEADED gasoline. This engine is old and probably run on unleaded gas for many years. I think intake rocker arm #2 was either misadjusted during a prior repair or that seat was ground down another time and the rocker arm assembly was just bolted back without any arm adjustments after reassembly.
