International Widows Day is a United Nations ratified day of action to address the "poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries". The day takes place annually on 23rd June. Kenya has not been left behind for the last 7 years though the day has been observed under the (resolution A/RES/65/189) since 2011, to draw attention to the voices and experiences of widows and to galvanize the unique support that they need.
This day is celebrated Country wide in different counties and Come Together Widows and Orphans Organization a Non Governmental Organization that champions for the Widowed Person's Rights and ensures they are Economically Empowered will be hosting this year's 8th International Widows Day Celebrations in Nakuru County in partnership with the County Government of Nakuru, State and other Non- State Actors like FIDA-Kenya, Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Members of the Fourth Estate & Ombudsman Office.
This year's theme "PROSPERITY FOR WIDOWS" is so important because we endeavor to achieve so many SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and the goals can only be achieved by having Prosperous Widows in all Fields of life.
The theme is so timely because it comes one year and ten months later after launch of "THAMINI MJANE" special loan product for Widows that is interest free, has no administrative charges and has more repayment period.
We are urging all our partners to help us in creating awareness about this important day in the lives of Widows and in the spirit of Leave No one Behind our Widowers who have always come out to join hands with us and also to seek for important help.
We have planned pre-events, main event and Post activities. We have 10 counties celebrating this time.
Together let's "Make Widowed Person's Matter in Kenya!
