Great to see something like this being put together. These fundamental skills are ones that i think everyone should know and understand. Best of luck to everyone involved in this project.

I would not say I hate the term. A master is the master of his own shop. I do not have a shop. I'm more a student of blacksmithing.
@bentoombs6 жыл бұрын
@@BrianBrazealBlacksmith I beg to differ sir. A master is a master in whatever shop or rock he/she pounding on. Alot of people learn a ton from you. We are trying to raise money to get James Davis down to see you, so we can learn from him. Lol
@BrianBrazealBlacksmith6 жыл бұрын
@@bentoombs I understand what you are saying, but from the old guild system that still is practiced in parts of Europe, you have to go through several years as an apprentice then journeyman then pass tests, present your master piece before you can set up your own shop and do business, and take in apprentices and journeymen. It will be great to get James here. I know by what he has been doing that he will be able to share more with this.

Wait so I’m wondering where it’s going? I’m a young smith on both aspects 16 and only been at it for about a year and a half. So I’d like to hear more!
@BrianBrazealBlacksmith6 жыл бұрын
We are planning to build 6 fully equipped stations so we can train 6 teams,12 people. Starting with the tools to make tools, they will go home with the tools and knowledge to share this with others. If we can get some to stay longer, we can do much more. I have found that once you get some young people together working on the same thing that they learn so much faster. The results of this are evident in the world with just the few opportunities we were able to have in the past. Alec Steele, Daniel Riffe, Dave Custer, and Paul Krzyszkowski are just a few of the Smith's that have been helped with this approach. We already have a few that are interested from around the world and they have started a chat group on messenger called International Young Smiths.

Oh man that’s sweet I’d definitely be interested in looking into that! Thanks a ton for the extra explanation.

So Brian, do you forge a hammer eye drift with the same idea in mind as the undersized drifts like you use for drifting a slot out to a round? If that makes sense? Like the idea in a hammer eye being to slot it then use an undersized point on a drift to open the hammer eye more side to side than front to back?
@BrianBrazealBlacksmith6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the drift should not touch the long sides at the starting point of entering the hole.

So Brian you forge the round to octaganol is that right then to round again then finish with the tapered drift how long do you leave for the handle to hold it when doing the hammers?
@BrianBrazealBlacksmith5 жыл бұрын
With this one we forged a square taper then octagon then round. I prefer to forge a hexagon taper then round but most people are not familiar with that approach. I leave about 7 inches for the handle.
