Before I met my wife I lived in Izmir for 4 months and I like it there better than here but I yield to her as she has many relatives in Antalya. In İzmir İ used to walk each morning from Guzelyalı to Konak each morning. I miss that. If you ever get to Antalya I hope you can visit us. Best regards, David Silverman

I am a foreigner living in Turkey. Honestly I don't understand how you manage to live here and spend only 607 USD/month. I live a simple live, do not have even a car, do not pay rent, but my expenses are rarely under 1000 USD. All my expenses on the items you mention at 13:52 are much higher except for the drinking water, since the tap water in the municipality I live is drinkable. Turkey is crazily expensive at the moment. If I compare with the prices in Europe almost everything is more expensive than there.

why only half of the year? Is it because to be considered non-resident for turkish tax purposes? If you live more than half of the year in turkey you have to pay tax on worldwide income; however, if you spend less than half a year in turkey then you only pay tax for the portion of income you earned from Turkish sources

I was wondering if you still liked it there and you do. 😀 We spend around $2600 per month and we own our 1 bedroom place (800 sq ft apartment) in an age 55+ community that costs around $250,000. Its close to your old stomping grounds of Costa Mesa. Living in coastal southern California is expensive (but nice weather). For now its comfortable for us. I have some medical issues I am taking care of with the Veterans Administration, so can not travel at present. I do like your videos! And some others about nature and travel. Great analysıs and report! Thank you for putting in so much effort. I moved back to Turkey as the native and citizen from the UK and yes everything you said are all spot on! And you covered all the important things in considering moving! I think they should sort out that residence permits after Pandemy so many countries started Perm Residence permits and visas to stay but then they all are changing it again! Similar to workplaces who said we can work remotely and now they ask people to come to the office every week or month. I wish they stick to what they say so that people can plan their lives and not get destabilised. One more thing I can add is travel is also good within Turkey in comparison to the European countries. Within Turkey every geographical region has a different culture, additional culinary, other customs and traditions and weather, landscape etc.

Thanks for sharing this! I returned to the US in 2014 after 14 years in Istanbul. Even then there were lots of different levels one could live at - if you wanted to be in the center or in some “all-the-modern-conveniences” apartment you could spend a crazy amount, but if you chose a normal neighborhood it was quite different. I shopped at local shops mostly, went to the local weekly “neighborhood markets”, etc. If course if you learn Turkish, a lot more things will be open to you. Turkish is a quite “backwards” from English, and definitely takes some work, but if you keep putting yourselves in situations where you need to use it, it will come. :-) Now that I’m back, it’s been hard to remain abreast of prices - people tell me prices for things and it’s all just a jumble of meaningless numbers for me. Turkish inflation has certainly been bad (if not as bad as the 90s insanity), but you’re also seeing the result of general inflation that has plagued the rest of the world too. The Ikea couch for example…plus Turkish import taxes… Anyway your info helped me get my head around it. I do sometimes consider returning as the reasons I had to be back in the US no longer apply. (If I’d stayed, I probably would have learned Syrian Arabic by now…) I haven’t been back since before COVID, so this does give me a better idea about what to expect.

You can catch full of authentic lifestyle in Morocco as well. Both counties has different charming, you should live and experience it. This is just an observation not a criticism. The issue is one of relative wealth. You are relatively wealthy in turkey and relatively poor in the US. You move your capital to somewhere where it buys more however this pushes up prices for the locals making them even poorer relatively speaking . This is happening around the world on every level . The global economy is inflationary by nature and, sadly, this benefits the wealthy and punishes the poor. After all, where do the Turks go to find better value?

No question Turkey is the best choice. It has got the location, the depth and beauty of culture and history, development , medicare, great food and transportation,. With cheap and short flights, you can visit anywhere in Europe as well. But you might get bored in Izmir after some time. Just a personal thought based on my own experience. There are some very beautiful suburbs around Istanbul with less an than hour's train and boat journey to the centre. These sububrs are affordable, in fact, can be more affordable than Izmir city at times, and still give you a quick access to one of the most bustling city in Europe. I wish you a great life ahead in Turkey. 🙏

@Apistoleon One that immediately comes to mind is Yalova. It used to be part of Greater Istanbul but now an independent district. It's very scenic and used to be a holiday spot for Atatürk. It's thermal Spa is also famous. By boat you can be in Beşiktaş in an hour or so. You can research the area online and on YT. The only downside of Istanbul is that it's quake prone. So make sure you look for a low rise. 🙏

@Apistoleon Thrace, Tekirdag is a ood place, couple of hours to Istanbul, so a day trip is possible. Silivri is another, about an hour from Istanbul, but obviously prices can be higher than Tekirdag. On the Anatolian I don't have much idea except Yalova which I mentioned earlier.

@@Apistoleon Also, if your budget can be stretched to 200k USD, you can find nice studios in Sariyer/Maslak areas (posh) and Yamanevlar (semi posh) inside Istanbul. Both these areas are very connected to the city by metro. I think if you get something over 200k in value you can get long term resident visa that can later be converted to citizenship after 5 years.

I met an expat that live in Turkey for some time. When asked if it was safe. His reply was “Very much so! You can only imagine what will happen to you, before you even get to a trial”…….

Thank you for sharing. The prices are not comparable to the prices in Australia. My principal residence located in a suburb with house prices starting from several million dollars (AUD) I own my house without mortgage, Council Rates- thousand of dollars/year, no land tax on principal residence, Home Insurance $340/month, Health Insurance $373/month, Water supply and usage $150/month, Electricity average $180/month, gas average $140/month, Bottled water/groceries/cleaning products/personal hygiene $300/week, restaurants/fashion e.t.c. are not comparable.

you guys found a loophole in the system... Congrats... if you ever get tired, try even a smaller city it would be cheaper... and less complicated...Coastal cities are more expensive in turkey eagan region, try moving more inland and you can really chill...

Welcome, I hope you live a happy life. In public hospitals, those with SGK(social security institution) are paid a small amount. You can also make yourself pay social security premiums. You can benefit from SGK in almost all private hospitals. It will be more than a public hospital, but it will be much less than the amount you would normally pay. If you take out private health insurance, private hospital payments will be covered by your insurance. I recommend you to get SGK in your own name.
