I like that you talked about the fact that our brains literally make this difficult for us. I feel like sometimes people make (individual)overconsumption nothing but a morality issue and completely ignore the things that are out of peoples control. It's nuanced

Talking about food waste, I have a task on my weekly to do list to use up something I don't want (either something someone else bought or a failed experiment) it has helped me to get creative and find recipes that I actually like for these things.

I’ve noticed recently certain cleaning company brands that seem to really target people with stereotypical ocd, where they’re basically trying to send the message of “you’re right your house isn’t clean enough right now, even if it looks completely spotless. Buy our thing”. It’s sooo frustrating.

I still have a hard time fighting the urge to buy whenever I’m feeling down or anxious. I do the same thing as you do Shelby : the thrift store 😅 but I always have a very specific item in mind, if I don’t find it the urge of shopping is gone anyway

Great timing for Black Friday 🙌 My friends got me gift cards for a baby shower. I took advantage of the sales to buy a car seat. One of the few things I'll always buy new, for safety reasons.
@darien80805 күн бұрын
There s no reason why people can’t buy a used car seat, they have a manufacture date with a use by date & they can be safety checked & fitted by a government approved agency.

I can relate to this so much. I used to be someone who overconsumed, often for no real reason. At the time, I felt like I was winning-getting more stuff, especially when it was free, gave me a strange sense of accomplishment. But now, looking back, I feel terrible about it. These days, I feel like I’m truly winning by having less. It’s such a shift in mindset, but I believe when you know better, you do better.

The decreasing the friction is absolutely crazy right now with almost every shopping platform offering the "make payments" option with interest. I'm hearing people are going into massive debt doing this because now they can buy things they can't even afford even if they don't have a credit card!!

@MichaelSmith-fj7di6 күн бұрын
I hate shopping and would rather do just about anything else. Consuming less is good for the planet and your wallet. Therefore, I think one should ask these questions when they’re looking to buy something. 1: Do I need it? If so, how soon do I need it? 2: Can the money that I’m going to spend on said item be put to better use elsewhere? 3: Where will I store it? 4: Am I buying it to replace something that broke? If so, can I repair what broke? 5: Do I already have that item or something similar that will work? 6: How frequently am I going to use the item? If it’s a one time use or infrequently, can I borrow it? 7: Can I get it secondhand? 8: If it must be purchased new, what is the most sustainable option that I can afford? In addition, go into the store with a list of what it is that you need or want so that you buy only those items and nothing else.

I believe myself to be really enageged in sustainability, I learn a lot about it, I've been following this channel for like 6 years, I preach sustainability, but.. when my ADHD hits I fall into shopping spree, it's not about the things I buy but the act of shopping, it's just "cheap dopamine". And when I get better I feel so bad about buying all those things... but sometimes I just can't stop. That's usually second hand clothing, but I'm also guilty of binge scrolling Temu 🤦🏽♀️

So yeah I’m a home organizer and declutterer and the idea of what you both mentioned seems to be a bit to prevalent in society these days. It would be nice to see less consumerism because it’s bad although recently I’ve noticed a few or enough to slow down quarterly earnings is happening so maybe it’s starting to get less.

12:35 thinking about it cynically I can see why people would think that and I see it working for some time, you get cute things for free and get to show them online and use them and you often get more without asking, you get to make a living of of something easy and ‘fun’. In the long run tho there isn’t a long run, people move to other platforms, follow other younger more trendy influencers and you have (unlike other jobs) nothing to show to be proud of, you didn’t make anything to show to others, you didn’t help people in a substantial way and maybe if you’re lucky you are left with money to wonder what to make up of your life, thinking about a life like this is really eerie.

Your skin can "improve" after just splashing it with water. Sometimes it DOES work. I know people dont want to believe it and i dont for everything, but skincare products are science and if its done how its tested it often DOES WORK. understand what youre saying tho; the competitiveness is leading to drastic claims.

I do wanna say as someone who’s got reoccurring depressive episodes, I think what people REALLY mean when they say that (if I could have 100 packages-) is: “if I had that kind of financial security, it’d significantly reduce the negative impact of the disregulated/unstable/unsafe environment that’s significantly feeding my distress.” Though, romanticizing having more than you could need literally-in a consumerism way-is ultimately unhealthy and unfulfilling. This applies to both us as humans and the planet, in which our goal is to uphold both. By the way, if you already know this, that’s great! I just wanted to share because I cant really tell sometimes what people mean by what they say online because of my neurodivergent brain. But, I’ve kind of learned to decipher. Thanks for this video, you guys! I just got the Who Gives a Crap toilet paper delivered on Halloween lol.
