@avationmusic5 жыл бұрын
Love the fact that you’re starting to use music theory - you’re using diatonic notes and you’re no loner playing trial and error consistently with your melodies! For anyone wondering, the reason that the one note out of scale works with the whole melody is because it’s actually in key. The way a major key is played is the same up and down, but when playing a minot key up the scale it’s played in its natural minor form whereas on the way down it’s played in its harmonic minor form (very common scale for trap music) that half step he used is part of the harmonic minor. Love watching you grow man! Keep it up :)
@darcywarcy58605 жыл бұрын
It’s a leading tone right? I’m trying to learn as well
@nemesisbeatz49725 жыл бұрын
Sorry but what you've said is incorrect, but pretty close and shows your getting on the right track! The natural minor scale (aka the Aeolian mode) that Nick is using is played the same going up as well as down. The melodic minor (natural minor with a #6 ) is played differently going up the scale as opposed to going down, when going down the scale you just play the natural minor (Aeolian). The harmonic minor scale(natural minor with a #7) is a completely different scale which was designed to allow composers to incorporate a perfect V to I cadence as the Aeolian mode has a minor v chord, it is also used to build chords under the melodic minor as due to it's #6 the chords don't sound right. The reason the note that was out of scale worked is because it is only a half step away from the note played previously therefore it functions as a passing tone, the chord also worked as the whole chord was exactly the same as the chord played before it but all the notes were raised a semitone so it functioned as a passing chord. Confusing stuff!
@avationmusic5 жыл бұрын
Nemesis Beatz Well I haven’t actually touched on music theory in a good few years as I only really need the basics for beatmaking :) thanks for this tho i’ll keep this in mind! Could the different ways it’s played allow you to modulate to a different key? If you know what I mean by that - not 100% sure if that’s the right term but that’s what I hear a lot, and not with regard to modulating in a synthesiser like an LFO or a cutoff envelope.
@nemesisbeatz49725 жыл бұрын
@@avationmusic Not sure what you mean by the different ways it’s been played, but yeah you can modulate from different keys regardless of what scale you are using but there are a few things to consider and some tips to make it easier! When modulating to a different key you should give the listener enough time to get familiar with the key you are in so for trap music I wouldn’t advise changing keys within a 8 bar loop (which is essentially 4 bars as it’s in double time) as it doesn’t give the enough time to establish a tonal centre. I would save key changes for different sections of the track, eg have one chord progression based one scale for the verses then a different scale used in either the hook, intro, or bridge. The easiest way to modulate is using the circle of fifths, and looking at scales close to the one you are in, the closer they are the less the notes in the scale differ for example the track in this video is written in A flat minor or g sharp minor it’s the same thing, so an easy modulation would be to c sharp minor as there is only one note different but the chords function differently (eg the c# minor chord is the iv in the scale of g# minor, but is the i chord in c# minor) so ithe chord progression will give a completely different vibe despite having mostly the same notes and therefore chords.
