I love this scene. The robots don’t think it’s possible because they were built by people and are bound by certain expectations. But since they’re able to learn, they’re slowly learning from Cooper that sheer will and determination can go a long way. It’s funny how Case tells Cooper not to be so cautious because that’s a direct reference to earlier in the movie when Cooper said being too cautious can get you killed. Case and Tars are both awesome characters and they feel like real people.
@Enderborn2726 ай бұрын
Honestly I never thought of it that way. I always assumed they were built to be closer to human reasoning but when cooper accepted the increased risk they reverted to running the numbers and thinking like machines and saw that they, The Endurance, and the shuttle could take the stress and it was the human element that would suffer most they allowed operation outside of normal parameters. Basically they said "you want to kill yourself, that's fine, I'll run the numbers so you actually succeed instead of dying like a fool"

The robot's know it's possible. They can do the math better than Cooper. What they doubt (it's not possible!) is that the average human can withstand the necessary forces to remain effective to complete the manoeuvre. Brand - clearly a high performance human to get selected - passes out under the forces. Whereas Cooper gambles on himself to push through it, because he believes he is not average. It's a modern version of old tales of humans doing things that aren't believed possible. In the classical Greeks retelling of the Battle of Marathon, over 2,000 years ago, the storytellers claimed the Athenian soldiers ran fullout to charge the Persian lines. This was clearly impossible for average humans wearing the weight of hoplite armour - to run that distance and then fight in close quarters the hoplites would have been physically exhausted. And the audience were themselves largely citizen soldiers - they wore the same armour, they knew how heavy it was. They knew it was bullshit. But the point was the Greek storytellers wanted to assign heroic qualities to the first Greeks who dared to advance on the previously invincible Persians, and having defeating them in the morning rapid marched back in the afternoon to save their home town. These men - often the father's and grandfathers of the guys in the audience - could do the impossible against all the odds. Their children and grandchildren could do the same. This is an old story about ourselves that we like to hear about ourselves, retold many times. But robots...it's just maths.

The shot of TARS' robot arm calmly and steadily controlling the stick to line up the ship with the station amidst all the chaos in the most crucial moment gives me chills. Many centuries of evolving human ingenuity led to the development of that arm and the AI that controlled it, and despite Cooper's great personal skill, the feat would not have been possible without that technology. It's as if the great human minds that created that technology were there with Cooper to help him in humanity's darkest hour. Humanity's savior was itself.

Every second Cooper delays the approach means one second closer to the Endurance burning up in the atmosphere and taking Cooper and the doctor with it. Matthew McConaughey is a genius. You can see that split second where he perceives the explosion on the Endurance and instantly realizes what it probably meant (basically: death. Not just theirs, but of all mankind as well) and the immediate decision to "just do something about it" and not give up. Hence the absolutely powerful and spot on delivery of the now famous line "no, it's necessary". It shows bravery and resolution in the face of absolute oblivion. Stuff of what heroes are made... Mike Douglas i actually think TARS was saying there aas an extremely low possibility of docking successfully and even if they did they would burn too much fuel to be worth it. But they talked about his honesty level not being 100 percent and TARS said “with humans, complete honesty is not always the best course” so he knew it was possible, just highly unlikely

How to paint the perfect scene. Nolan just makes you feel everything that is going on here, the rush, the adrenaline. The score matching the intensity of the scene. This scene in the theater was just incredible!

I seriously wish that I saw this in theaters when it first came out, that probably would have been my best movie theater experience ever. When I actually first watched this, my adrenaline (like you said) was rushing fast during this specific scene because I didn't know if they were going to be able to dock on to the endurance and that music composed by Hans Zimmer gave me serious goosebumps.

About eight years ago a buddy of mine asked me if I wanted to come and watch this film be screened with a live orchestra in a beautiful arena in London called the Royal Albert Hall. Of course I said yes. We rocked up in our everyday student threads and found ourselves surrounded people in evening dress. To give you a sense of the crowd this event had attracted, Johnny Marr of the Smiths was in the queue next to me at the concession (he got Minstrels if I remember rightly). My buddy had neglected to tell me that this was a gala affair - Michael Caine would be acting as the evening's MC, introducing a panel discussion on the physics of Interstellar led by Brian Cox and featuring Chris Nolan, Nobel laureate Kyp Thorne and Hans Zimmer, prefaced by an introduction from Stephen Hawking himself, right there in the flesh. It was a fabulous, elegant and edifying discussion that made it clear what a marriage of thoroughgoing artistic principles and commitment to scientific (or at leas theoretical scientific) realism this film is. And all that was before the movie itself was duly put on before us, with its superb score delivered by the superb orchestra. For this scene, the hall's great pipe organ took centre stage. The sound, amplified by the space, was immense. The docking was the most scintillating in-cinema movie experience I've ever had; it had absolutely obliterating intensity. And on the stroke of what would be 4:15 in this video, the entire crowd burst into a spontaneous ovation. Cheers and applause like I've never seen in a theatre. I'm convinced both Nolan and Zimmer anticipated that the scene would have this effect - that's why those sections of crucial silence are bedded in after it. Unforgettable. Cheers to my buddy Yoan for giving me the chance to experience that.

Notice how Cooper is leaning his head into the spin and remains conscious, while Brand lets her head go with the spin and passes out. Sad that he got so much right but also sooo muich wrong in this scene. 1) While docking they get pushed to the left. But the ship is rotating around their head axis. 2) While they push out of orbit (shot outside the ship with the engines running), you still see debris floating around, that is not "accelerating" away (of course it's the Endurance that is accelerating, but still). 3) The energy of the explosion would never ever be enough to make the orbit cross the atmosphere that quickly. I mean you will never park your ship in an orbit that is almost in the stratosphere. And even if... the Endurance would have been significantly pushed towards them. So from a cinematic perspective I absolutely agree this is a masterpiece, but scientific correctness... nah, sadly not.

Please don't compare the two. Gravity isn't even in the same league as this movie. I was really excited when it came out. "Finally a good high budget space movie that is supposed to be very realistic" I thought. Then I watched and in the very first scene... The very first minute of the movie my thoughts changed to "you gotta be kidding, wtf is this shit??!?!!" As George Clooney's character (name not even with remembering) was buzzing around the ISS in an EVA suit like a freaking moth around a light bulb at night. I facepalmed at the absurdity of that manouver, but kept watching thinking I could get past it. I couldn't. It got worse. Had I facepalmed much harder, or more often at the rest I would have faced in my skull. Then I watched Interstellar and it made Gravity look like something a two year old came up with. My largest regret is that I can't find the part in my brain responsible for sitting my memory of watching Gravity and remove it... somehow get those two hours of my life back to do something more productive and rewarding... Like watch paint dry.

I was 19 years old when this movie came out in germany. I met a girl in hospital and after a week getting out of there, we decided to go to the cinema for our first date (I don't recommend it for a first date btw). However at first we had to choose between this masterpiece and "gone girl". I can remember watching it without ever seeing any trailer, any clip on youtube or even knowing anything about this movie. Every scene, every dialog, the acting, the music, the emotions, and the depth of this movie gave me goosebumbs. This movie was the first to make me feel emotional watching it. Seeing a father, watching her daughter over a screen getting older and older and not being able to hold his promise, while being almost alone in space. When the docking scene began I already forgott that I was on a date. I didn't even thought about her anymore. After the movie my mind was just somewhere else but not with her. I said to her this was probably the best movie I've ever seen in my entire life. She looked at me and said, "eww no". I never texted her again. If someone asked me for a piece of perfect cinematography, I'd present this. The eerie quiet of the explosion, while scientifically accurate, somehow amplifies the severity of the situation, and the camera angles make you feel like you're right there with Cooper and Brand. On top of that you have the soundtrack, which perfectly matches the intermingling of chaos, focus, and precision involved in caputuring the endurance. Every time the music changes rhythm as the two ships syncronize their spin, it makes a lump drop through my throat. I've watched this scene at least 8 timss and it never gets old. To Nolan and Zimmer, I give you my most roaring applause.

I love the fact that the stakes were so incredibly high in this moment. If they didn't save the ship, humanity was literally doomed. They NEEDED that ship to accomplish what they set out to do. Cooper risking everything for an impossible maneuver to save humanities last hope is amazing. Certainly one of the most epic moments in modern cinema I've ever seen. And theres no evil villain, no great enemy, no war or major conflict... It's just the reality of space, human nature and our will to survive and save those we love no matter the cost, regardless how impossible the situation might seem. Love truly does conquer all things. Time, space, gravity, even the universe itself can't stand against it.

Love how CASE went from "It's not possible" to snapping Cooper into action with the "This is no time for caution" line. Love the AI/Human team up of this scene; without either, it would not have worked and the mission/mankind would be done for. CASE was needed for rotation and speed calculations, TARS was needed to attach, and Cooper needed to be there to come up with the crazy plan in the first place and insist on going for it despite CASE's conclusion that docking was not possible. It really showed the advantages machine has over man and vice versa, but in a scene where they are working together flawlessly.

It’s been 5 years, and let me tell you, the explosion happening before he can finish speaking is truly scary and manages to jump scare me every. Single. Time.

And then the silence, I swear I can fucking hear my heartbeat at that moment. That was an experience, Holy shit

It’s so unconventional too. No screaming explosion, you see it first and then it’s all shown in complete silence. Very novel.

I rewatched the movie last week in the cinema (they were re-releasing old movies). I knew what would happened, but I was all cramped up and tensed for that explosion to happen.
