The list of requirements is long: Compact, light and with high energy density. At the same time, they must be ethically and sustainably developed. Christian von Koenigsegg talks in an exclusive interview about the battery development and the batteries of the future in hyperel cars!
Were it not for the fact that batteries are heavy, expensive and have a low energy density, electric cars would have dominated motoring since the start. But the oil proved to have superior benefits and we got fantastic internal combustion engines.
But now the pendulum is swinging towards electric cars due to climate and environmental reasons, and batteries are still the weakest point of electric cars.
This is part two of our interview series on electric cars with Christian von Koenigsegg - here you will find part one!
We have received an exclusive interview with Christian von Koenigsegg, who is increasingly interested in electrification. First out was the plug-in hybrid Regera, soon another will come in the form of the mega-GT Gemera, and later also pure electric cars…

Otroligt intressant att lyssna på Christian som vanligt! Jag har i princip aldrig haft några idoler under mitt hittills 43-åriga liv, men Christian är absolut den som kommer närmast i hela vårt avlånga land.

Verkligen. Otroligt intelligent och kunnig och ligger i absoluta frontlinjen, före alla andra, gällande revolutionerande tekniska idéer. Högsta respekt åt honom. Just därför är han så intressant att lyssna på - så kunnig och så vänlig!

Christian was just as great in this interview as always. Such a great guy and an epic company with Koenigsegg! The interviewer was for my taste too hard trying to get Christian to say that batteries in cars are bad and it'll take a long time to be better then ice cars. I think the interview could've been way more interesting if the promise that we're already in good enough land for normal cars is the case and go from there to more then just "yes better tech will benefit us if there is a breakthrough"!

Riktigt intressant att höra vad Christian har att säga om vanliga bilar. Han har både djupa tekniska kunskaper och är samtidigt en del av bilindustrin utan att vara partisk. Ger ett djupare perspektiv.

Jag gillar CvK skarpt, men det såg roligt ut @2:05 när han visar en "gradvis förbättring" genom att göra en handrörelse som planar ut nedåt, gillar han inte förbättringar? 😁

Svåraste omställningen lär ju ligga på logistiktrafiken på vägarna. Vad blir räckvidden på långtradare? Hur ofta behöver dessa laddas upp och hur lång tid kommer laddtiden ta kontra tiden det tar att tanka upp idag? Hur tunga blir dessa fordon egentligen? Tyngre fordon ger mer slitage på redan dåliga vägar.

Ja där finns rejäla utmaningar, men kanske också vinster med lägre driftkostnader och mindre service. Staten skjuter till stora summor till den tunga trafiken, för att få fart på utvecklingen. /alrik

Till sportbilar absolut, dvs det är dyrt och tillverkningskapaciteten är låg, så tyvärr lär det aldrig bli ett "massbränsle", men tillverkningen ökar. /alrik

Syntetiska bränslen eller ej. Man har fortfarande samma problem med utsläpp som med ett vanligt fossilt bränsle.

All I could think about is how Tesla has been planning for these issues for many years, and due to that foresight, their ramp will be much smoother to 10 or 20 million cars then anyone else, while diverting a big chunk of cells going to grid storage also

You must have missed the part about materials. Even with Tesla's foresight, it's still battery constrained. Hence, no CyberTruck, no Semi, and no roadster. And this with a multi-year head start where only Tesla was sucking up raw materials.

@@jghall00 it takes a long time to design and develop a new battery from scratch while trying to optimise every step for cost and performance. I assume they didn't plan from the very beginning to make their own batteries, but over time they saw there wasn't the motivation for suppliers to ramp as hard as Tesla, which forced them to start their own battery program. It sounds like this year its chip donstrained, then next year its cell constrained again, which means its on them to make enough cells for what they want. So a cell constrained excuse won't cut it since they control that them selves from now on. Let's see how they go at securing raw materials/mines, but I believe they have planned sufficiently in those areas. But time will tell:)

Lite småfel i översättningen, såg bland annat att översättaren skriver "Morse's Law" istället för "Moore's law" (med gement l i law). I övrigt en intressant intervju!

nope! Batterier bliver ikke synderligt meget bedre. Problemet ligger i at man allerede bruger det mest hidsige metal man kan bruge. Ren lithium brænder i atmosfærisk luft. Der er derfor ingen mulighed for at finde et bedre metal. Cellen kan ikke holde en spænding over 3.7 volt. Grunden til at man synes Li-ion batteriet er så godt er at man gik fra Ni-MH på 1.2 Volt. Dette spring kan ikke gentages.

Tillgång på el omöjliggör en snabb övergång i Sverige. Finns ingen anledning att forcera en övergång till el. Låt det ta den tid som behövs för marknaden så inte allmänheten drabbas av onödiga kostnader och problem.

Fast det finns ju redan? De kommer garanterat inte lägga ner den tiden och pengarna när de kan köpa grymma batterier (Rimac). Det finns fortfarande en skrälldus med komponenter och lösningar i en bil som kan utvecklas ytterligare.

We need 4 times the energy density or 1kWh/kg in batteries before they have the range and handling of gasoline cars, i.e. not having heavy EVs as we do today. I'm not saying that this is a hard limiting barrier today, but to get the same acceleration mass and range as gasoline cars, this is where they need to be, before they will be indistinguishable in performance. This will require 2'nd or 3'rd gen solid state batteries or something entirely different. This means that in 10-15 years, if gasoline is still around, there will be no difference in perception of EVs compared to other types of fueled vehicles. My battery pack is from 2017. Can't wait for the upgrade in 5-10 years.

@Zuurker U It was about cars like the Königsegg. I drive a 20kWh neighborhood EV with a 30kW motor, Fiat 600 elettra. Batteries weigh 125kg and vehicle weight is 900kg. It is quite spiffy at city speeds even with such a small motor and it uses only 100Wh/km average, so my range is 200km. By the numbers; a model 3 uses 180Wh/km That is 1/3 the material used for chassis and because it doesn't weigh 2400kg like a model 3, the lower power consumption translates to longer range. So Had I batteries with 3-4 times the energy density, I would preserve performance and have the range of a Tesla. This will translate to cheaper EVs, even if next gen batteries are slightly more expensive as such a vehicle can be manufactured with fewer materials.

@Zuurker U Indeed Price per kWh is the no. 1 cell metric. However the compound effect, of lower battery mass and by that lower vehicle mass, leading to lower energy consumption, equates to "free" extra range, so as cell energy density goes up, the range increase is larger than 1:1. That means that lighter cells can be slightly more expensive, and still be cheaper per vehicle and per mile of range. As an extreme example, just think of how lead-acid batteries work: To have 60 mi range required 500 kg batteries. However putting the same capacity Li-ion in the same car saves 350kg, this is the same as 5 passengers, so there is a range increase of maybe 15% for free! I'm not saying that LFP is wrong. Likely they hit the right price point in the tradeoff between range and cost now, but that doesn't mean that a higher energy and likely more expensive chemistry won't be the most cost effective solution in the future.

EVs correctly built with TODAYs technology are already in total superior to ICE and soon cheaper too (some Chinese model have already hit price parity) Of course I can remember once upon a time I just had to charge my Ericsson once a week or less…but keeping things charged is a habit now and in many areas, the density of charging opportunities are way higher than gas stations.

@@automotorsporttv Det är bara väl bara så att batteri är mycket mer energieffektivt än vätgas. Skall du producera vätgas med el, och sedan distrubiera det, kommer det att gå åt c:a tre gånger så mycket el, än om man laddar batterier.

@@ellbegot Vätgas eller syntetiska bränslen kommer säkert vara viktigt i vissa applikationer. Skogsmaskiner, skördetröskor, snöröjning etc. diesel är svårt att ersätta med batterier i dessa.

In the past 10 years that Tesla has made the Model S, I have not seen a 5% improvement in energy density. Cumulatively that would be 63% due to compounding. From Tesla's criminally vague or even misleading 4680 cell demonstration, it might be 360 Wh/kg but not super powerful. Insufficient for a Koenigsegg or Rimac/Bugatti. 6C or so, peak. Rimac uses 16C. Tesla Plaid is at 10C, but 4680 6C pack would be made bigger than their present 10C ones.
