(Also check out my music video: "Cost of Doin' Business" • FIFTH - Cost of Doin' ... )
In this episode I sit down with Joy, a former bethelite, regular pioneer, "need-greater" and elder's wife. She describes bethel before and after the failure of the 1975 prophecy, how she became disillusioned with the organization and what eventually led to her split with the religion.
Joy's Recommended Reading List:
Crisis of Conscience - Ray Franz
In Search of Christian Freedom - Ray Franz

Excellent Job! I left the Witnesses 30 years ago while I was the Presiding Overseer of the congregation I was attending. So Joy and I shared some of the same experiences of that time period. I was also raised as a Witnesses, but after extensive research on religions and their origins as a hold, along with identifying erroneous information coming from the governing body, during one meeting as I looked out at the congregation which included my family and many friends, I felt that I could not continue to support these lies and untruths anymore. So right after that service I called a meeting of all the elders and announced that I was stepping down and disassociating myself from the organization, and I never looked back. I started my deprogramming right away and started working on my college degree in the next 2 months.

Great video. I was baptized for 2yrs but around the organization for 8ys. My wife at the time my girlfriend was disfellowship introduced me to the Jw organization. I got baptized in 2015 really thinking this organization was God's organization. My wife who got reinstated in 2014 left the organization and me in 2016. I was miserable at the time only advice was given to stay busy in field service. Being new in this organization I didn't understand most stuff they was saying. I started to wake up when a Watchtower study mentioned that Jesus Christ know when he returning to the earth. I don't remember which Watchtower stated this but is was in 2017. Also, I noticed fear of men was mentioned when disfellowship topics was being discussed. I wrote my letter of dissociation back in January. My wife who faded away told me I was crazy for leaving Jehovah. I'm a peace with my decision. It wasn't easy at first. A lot of Jw don't read nor do research. This is definitely a cult.

Interestingly Ray Franz said his one major regret was denying his wife a family, as she too deeply regretted not having children, feeling lonely in her older age. I always thought it was one of the cruelest of the Watchtower edicts, not to have children. Particularly as Joy mentions back then, and more so I believe in the 40s etc. Fantastic video Fifth, As always. Many thanks to yourself and Joy.

A wonderfully helpful interview, fifth! Can I say this is a standout interview among many great interviews you have conducted. Your respect and compassion for women is exceptional and I love that you sit back and allow Joy to tell her story, never intruding but simply drawing her out and noting points of interest and shared experience. Joy is such a clear-minded, no-nonsense speaker who also comes across as fair-minded and caring. Thank you both so very much.

Rody Withers That's what I love about Cliff, it's never about him always his guest. As you say he politely and I'd have to say pretty humbly draws them out, encouraging them to express themselves and to show appreciation. I love his lack of ego. He honestly should do it professionally on TV as its not a skill just everyone has!

I had a new born baby when a special pioneer called at my door, I studied and was baptized at age 30. My husband, a good man said “when are you going to get it through your head “ I AM NOT INTERESTED”. Speculation was, the end would come in 1975, I thought I will be 45, that’s not too bad. I will be 88 in a few weeks, yikes !!! Looks like I will have to swallow the bitter pill of death after all...My two children are witnesses and are still in this mind controlling cult...I have not officially quit...I will not run the risk of losing family and friends...but just do minimum to get by...I am heartsick now believing that if this system ends it will be because man has blown up the planet...

I left the organization about 7 years ago and I got married in 1976 and baptized at the age of 15. My 3 daughters are all out. I am so happy and so are they. My husband is still in he got baptized about the age of 10 and I cannot convince him that the organization is not it.

Join the club. Im out, my husband is still in. It's a personal decision to leave when your ready for your own reasons. My family on both sides r also in. I have one close friend out n a few friends who r also out. I I grew up with n she left 20yrs ago. I'm much more recent. Many witnesseses don't know what's going on bc they r told to only look at jw org. Everything else is false n lies n an attack on gods org. So it's worse for our husbands bc they hear the real truth from us. I've never been happier leaving. Sadly so many that leave need deprogramming. My friend n I didn't. It was easy n we both r people people n made friends easily with our respective interests. Loved telling my hubby about no longer needing to report his hrs mthly. I knew that would make him happy. It did.

What a lovely lady..I’m going to look into those books...very well spoken..thank you for this video..my experience with this group was during the same time frame that she discussed..I just lost my last uncle that was in the JWs...I’d been away from my family that was in this for years...moved to another state..remarried,..etc...he reached out to me..I was a disfellowshipped person too..he told me he loved me. Did the same with my cousins who got out of it too...I went home for his funeral..and the ones still in the JW...very rude to me..I’d been away so long, I’d forgotten all the pettiness...so glad I got out and got my kids out...thank God there are things like this available...I’m sure the JWs call all this persecution...

You ask broad, open-ended questions and then patiently allow your subject to take his time to answer completely in his own way, without your interrupting, leading him, or projecting your own slant unto his experience. Joy’s experience, like that of each one of your subjects-male and female, is invaluable for any who struggle with doubts about the Watchtower corporation’s claim of having “the truth.” You have found your niche, son. Thank you for doing these interviews. I was a Witness in the 70's so this interview really resonated with me. I visited Bethel and the Farm in '78. Being female was a dead end in the organization. How I saw the role of females even as a little girl was unsettling and as a teenager in the mid seventies during the women's movement I was frequently in trouble because of my opinions about our female potential. The blessing of "the truth" was that hell was not a burning place. If Jehovah could read our hearts then I knew that he knew I was not as "bad" as the elders inferred. It's taken a lifetime of counseling to settle into my worthiness that is the birthright of every human.

THANK YOU for this wonderful interview Fifth and Joy. That ex Witnesses are networking, sharing, and supporting one another now that the internet makes it possible means that fewer will sustain permanent psychological damage once they exit. DF'd in the mid-80s, I am just now--finally--unraveling my programming with a professional and feel much less alone with my 'secret' than in all the decades since I left. Sharing stories like yours makes a real difference to people whose gut tells them something's not right but whose mind is still under the WT spell.

Amazing, can relate to the Jw running away. One of the Best Book I ever read. Very much a mind control group. I still have my family, so it isn't as hard on me not have your relative, but even if I had to lose my relative I can really be happy that I learn that it is an occult. I have left over 4 yrs ago. Truly Happy, what a Blessing to learn that people are really coming into there own mind.. They're really not nice people, they only love under condition that you do what they do, real love is unconditional. Very hateful people.

Re: healing time post-cult - I think 2 years is a very optimistic estimate. Right after I got out, I remember reading somewhere that cult recovery takes approx one year for every 7 spent in. I also remember feeling so heart-sick at the time thinking that meant 3+ years for me. I really wanted it to go faster than that. Healing and recovery continue as long as we live, but the "one for seven" estimate proved true for me for getting over the worst part of the grief and getting a good foothold in building a new life. It's been 20 years post-cult for me now. It's good to see the Internet freeing so many folks now. Thanks again for all your excellent videos, Fifth.

Pixilate U - That sounds about right. I'm in the 30 year club. 1982-2012. Between 2012-2016, I still had the skunk scent in my clothes so to speak. I didn't believe it was a cult after I left. That came about in 2016. Now I view YT for ongoing encouragement - giving and learning.

Joy, Great Job! We were young wives together at Bethel! Our lives ran similar patterns. I was raised a JW from a baby. I joined my husband in 1974 and we left in 1978 to have our family. I am not sure I recall you and your husband. That was a bit of a booming time for Bethel with many couples coming in. Yes, the buzz at Bethel shifted when 1975 came and left. "Whispers" in rooms and huddles began, which my husband and I found ourselves in questioning how this happened and to grapple with it. Plus the factions among the Governing Body began to show up when we had our morning worship, which was often shocking. One of my first moments of clarity was one day I said to my husband " I think we are serving men here, not Jehovah, because Jehovah would never be this hard on us." also the witch hunt began and fear erupt. Yet, it could not stop. I saw the beginnings of discrimination of Ray Franz and knew something was not right. Like you, I had such respect for them and had been able to be friends with them as they were so down to earth. Salt of the earth people. Anyway, we left too thinking once we were in a congregation and having our family, we would be fine. But not to be. I began to see "through" the Watchtower articles and could not quite buy into it. By now we knew many on the writing staff and began to know of "politics" of what was going on. When Ray was ousted, I was so disturbed. Leaving the Org takes time. It still took 2-3 years to finally leave. We mostly did the "move and don't connect" method. We have been so brainwashed to Not have anywhere else to go to. I would have persistent teachings running through my brain that would not let go. In 1983, When Rays book, Crisis of Conscience came out, I was finally free! Free to leave and move on! Like all of us find out, it still took several more years to understand what happened and to deprogram. I feel it took me 5ish years. AT LEAST. I went to college and did a Psychology class and did my paper on "Coming out of Cult" which helped me too. It emphasized to go through the mourning process. It actually is a loss, in our case. We also did have some fun and helpful network support groups that met and helped us, in each others home that we found in the area.Today, there is so much help Online, that we did not have then. But we desperately networked with each other. I am thrilled to death my children were not raised JWs! Now I am a grandma and here we all still here! I read all the books back then that you suggested Joy, and I AGREE TO EDUCATE YOURSELF to really become free, and not just out. I thank my God that somehow I wanted to really find "Truth". To this day I seem to be a seeker of truth. Thank you Joy for sharing.

That's something I always thought about. An elder who spent his teens and twenties in the "world" back in the 60's and 70's, doing whatever he wanted to do sexually, who later became a witness and married immediately after or before, is going to sit down, counsel, and brow beat me as to why I should've been able to control my sexual desires as a 20 something man who was raised in the truth and baptized at 11. And after going 24 years with remaining chaste, has to now be disfellowshipped because I had a "moment of weakness" and gave into my completely human, normal, sexual desires that Jehovah himself put in me. Complete BS

Excellent video; with great gratitude I listened to Joy's story, a very profound and insightful detailed events of her past with the "organization". In my opinion these are historical moments, in the sense that we are living and observing the beginning of the imminent fall awaiting the watchtower; is interesting that Joy described Ray Franz, I believe that "history" will recalled him as a catalyst that awakened thousands and unmasked the corrupted "governing body".

The importance of every event in a JWs life is measured by how close one views Armageddon to be. I remember a JW sister once mentioning that her dentist as a preliminary to jaw pain treatment advised her to have braces on her teeth for a period of two years. "Two years!" she said "Armageddon will be here by then." That was 20 years ago.

Man, I thought I was bad in the kingdom hall for not following along. I would go off on complete journeys whenever I heard an interesting scripture, checking references, and references of references and references of the references references, and be completely lost in it; it's only of the few ways I could maintain my sanity in the utter boredom. Or sometimes I would have my songbook open and be trying to figure out how I could change the written chords to make the music sound more jazzy, jotting down chords and musical notes. I was always uneasy doing that for fear of getting caught. But there was Joy, reading Crisic of Concience wrapped in a bible cover, right there in the middle of the meeting... WOW. She was destined to leave the organization.

Loved this Interview with Joy and thank you for sharing! Joy, I'd would love to connect with you; and Like you, I had the wonderful honor and privilege to visit Ray and Cynthia at their home (and stay in contact with them for a little while) not too long after leaving the Org. As a 3rd generation Witness, the "deprogramming" was an overhaul that seemed so daunting, but like Joy said there is a wonderful life outside! It crazy to think how - with disdain- we looked at other mind-controlling religions (like the LDS and Scientology) and yet the JW Org is the "exact" same boat! And that took me a long time to admit it. So YES, there is a long road of healing - and it will take some time: the time to unravel the lies, accept it for what it is, then rebuild your self-identity back up where you can trust again and have a true "relationship with GOD" without the filtration of men. Thank you Fith for your interviews, this is sooo helpful to all of us!

The 1975 issue disappointed some and devastated others. The impact on those lives has never been truly acknowledged by Watchtower. To suggest that " some brothers " gave rise to the imminence of this system, at that time ,is disingenuous to say the least. The older generation that experienced living during that time must be dispirited and question the integrity of the organization and wonder just how far they are willing to go to preserve their credibility . Regards.

The way the Society hinted at it and tantalized the rank and file by being coy about it was disgraceful. Then denying any responsibility and deflecting the blame.

Wonderful interview! I could relate to everything she said being from same generation and age group. My husband and I became inactive about two years ago after the ARC. Just couldn’t take the hypocrisy anymore. Is there a way to contact Joy? Would love to talk with her. No one around here to talk to and our kids are starting to shun us. Thanks

You totally are describing me. Ive been gone since 1993......was disfellowshiped then but JUST NOW IN MY LATE 40s are feeling like I can look at what my beliefs have been. I was abused sexually by 2 diff people within the congregation when i was young and have suffered emotionally for years because of this. My parents are still very dedicated YET i care for them physically in their older age. But we do not speak of spiritual issues but i do hear this daily that i need to return to jehovah and leave the issues of abuse behind and leave it in jehovahs hands. Thanks for posting.

dude, your videos are amazing. i saw your story on leah & mike's scientology show, & you seem like such an incredible human being. your heart shines thru you & the good you put out into the world. i sincerely wish you the best of everything. thank you also for understanding "ummm what on earth were they doing with women & children in this billion dollar organisation?!? where are their rights?" i mean, you haven't said that outright but i've watched quite a few of your vids & it comes thru. thank you for that, because it's my biggest question about JWs & i don't think it's ever really been asked let alone answered: why do the male JWs allow their partners, wives, sisters, daughters, nieces, etc, to be treated as second class citizens? what good man sits back & thinks "yup, this all looks fine to me. keep your mouth shut & go make dinner." i hope one day a male JW will explain to me why it was ok in his mind to treat women as slaves, there only to cater to the men & never step out of line.

I admire Jehovah's witness ,for spending time helping people the fundamental truths found in the scriptures! But what I don't like is the Control or power it gives to men !! WHO don t deserve this control ! Jesus spilt his life blood for me and he is the one who deserves the love and respect !I know they say that elders deserve double honour ! And show it from the Bible , but I know this is talking about the apostles not twenty something's high fivers ! Patting each other on the backs
