Interview Red Flags: Signs of a Toxic Work Environment. 7 Interview Red Flags to look for to ensure you don’t end up in a toxic work environment. Sometimes a job might seem like a perfect fit the way it is described, but the reality can be very far from it. How can we ensure we don’t end up working in a toxic workplace? No matter how much pressure there is during your job interview, you can STILL notice certain signs which translate into interview red flags. Meaning: the company is NOT a good fit for you. Some people decide to accept the job even after the obvious interview red flags. They worry they might not get another job. They feel pressured by their financial situation. So they take the job and, of course, they regret this decision. Because soon they are back to the job market, searching for a job but with their confidence completely shaken, doubting their skills and capabilities.
I always tell this to candidates, you are not the only one who is being interviewed. During your job interview you should also be gathering as much information about the company as possible, so you won’t end up in a wrong place. These are the interview red flags which warn you of a possible toxic work environment:
1. Your first impressions were negative
Whether you are interviewing online or in person, pay attention to how the employees interact with you and with each other.
If you are visiting their offices, are you greeted nicely by the reception?
Look around, do you see anyone, people in the meetings? Take note of the atmosphere you see in the building. What does the environment feel like? Do they seem happy and energized? Are they comfortably talking with each other?
If all you see are tired faces, no one smiling, in fact quite the opposite they are all looking miserable this is an obvious red flag. From the way you were greeted to the interactions you witness between employees, you should look for people that seem happy, energetic, friendly and comfortable...

Another red flag is the employer repeatedly saying it's a "fast paced" environment. I've found that's another way of saying it's an environment where people dont plan and are reactive versus being deliberative and strategic in professional environments or they are generally understaffed so you have to work faster.
@myemmotion
@myemmotion 3 жыл бұрын
Now that you are saying it, it could be their way to "phrase" it. My former company used to love saying that they are "fast paced" and they indeed are. Which also comes with some disorganized way of working.

@Coily Queen. When my sister went for the interview for the food service position, my sister told me that she waited an hour for the interview, I told my sister why did you waited so long for the interview, her response was that she was desperate for the job. I told my sister you’re not desperate for someone to treat you that way, but she took the job anyways. My sister was working in food service, and the employer, boss and manager wanted my sister to work “fast paced”, if not they will let her go. And that’s what they did, they actually let her go because the boss told her that she works to slow.

HIGH TURNOVER, yes, huge red flag. I work for a small business (small office w. only 5 employees + the two owners who are also married) and red flags are everywhere. I've been there three years and tried to hang on and get through it for the money, but the pattern of abuse has taken its' toll on my mental and physical health. I don't have another job yet, but after the most recent demeaning episode, I gave them my resignation. REASONS: 1) The Dumpster - that's how they've treated me. Dump as much work as they can on me and only me. Unreasonable amounts and deadlines. And they don't do it to anyone else. They SCAPEGOAT me. 2) Boss who has ZERO office experience: inconsistent policies, constantly changing them or forgetting what they are. Unorganized and procrastinates. Does NOTHING, delegates everything. 3) FAVORITISM 4) Turnover: Within a 2 wk period, 3 out 5 people quit (a repeating pattern, no one stays more than 1-2 years at most). 5) EMOTIONAL OUTBURSTS - BOTH BOSSES: Impatient w. employees (nothing is ever enough, good enough or fast enough) 6) QUESTIONING is NOT ALLOWED - no discussions allowed, just do it 7) NO BREAKS - they even watch how long you take to go to the bathroom! Must eat at your desk. Yet the boss/owners wander off constantly (so do their "favorites"), close their office doors and talk endlessly to their friends on the phone, surf the web, etc. IF they get a phone call, on the business line, rudely bark at me if I ask them if they would like to take the call (ie - "interrrupt" their private closed door bliss). One of the unhealthiest places I've ever worked. Counting my final days and hoping my next job will be in a kinder, gentler, more fair and humane environment.

I am really sorry you've been going through all that. Every single aspect you mentioned screams toxic and unhealthy. @clarasiewwl

Omg my experience is quite similar to yours. The bosses were married and I didn’t know till the husband had an outburst at a colleague and shouted “show some respect to MY WIFE!!”. Also had no breaks and had to work till way past midnight on Christmas and New Year’s. A colleague that simply asked about annual leave was fired for being a “slacker” just for asking. Sick leave days are deducted from salary. Full of rage tantrums and no direction. Everyday is fraught with threats at every turn, with passive aggressive put downs, threatening emails, gossiping during meetings. The bosses were into illegal practices. Workload was extreme. I’m still struggling with the effects of burnout and anxiety months after leaving that toxic place. It has made me dread the idea of going back to work and has shaken my confidence in my ability to do what I do. Toxic work culture should not be normalized

I once had an interview with a textile firm. I noticed during the interview the Manager was sitting with the man interviewing me. He was constantly looking at his watch. He didn't speak much at all. It seemed like they both weren't interested in getting to know me as a person. They would often cut me off whenever I did answer the questions. When it was my time to ask questions, I noticed the manager kept rolling his eyes and he didn't even answer them properly, just one worded answers. I left feeling quite upset, they didn't even shake my hand or say thankyou for coming. They just ushered me off. I knew I didn't get the job. I have a disability and I feel like it could have been due to that. But who knows. I noticed overtime, loads of positions were opening up, the Company has closed down now.

I used to believe that the gut feeling was an irrational reaponse based on no real evidence. I ignored my gut feeling for a certain job I took thinking it was nothing. The pay amd benefits were good so I took the job. Come to find out that work environment was the most toxic experience of my professional life. Management took all autonomy from workers, no transparency, blatant favoritism, and fear and anxiety pervaded the workplace. The gut feeling I ignored was me picking up on those little details that weren't right. My gut was not irrational at all, but was busy in the unconscious collection of evidence. I wish I listened.

It's impressive how strong our instincts are when it comes to such situations. It's like the first impression caused by certain people, we can get a certain "vibe" from people but we never give it any importance until there are actual facts for better or worse. We tend to build our evaluations and decisions based on facts, which most of the times are necessary but they can't be a substitute to our gut feeling. When my "toxic boss" started at the company, I immediately felt he'd be a nightmare to work with. But I kept convincing myself that with some time and hard work, I'd be able to build a good professional relationship with him. NOT! So I do TRUST my gut ever since.

When you have been on a bad interview, had a bad boss, left a bad company, PASS IT ON by naming and describing them on the internet. Warn other people, do the right thing. NAME The names of the bad boss, bad company. PUT THE REAL NAMES of shitty companies / bad employers on the internet. Name them. I see your social security number is missing from the application, why? Because NO ONE has the legal right to require that for any purpose but tax deductions, and only AFTER hiring. Well, we need your social security number. Ok, tell you what. You are a fair person, right? You believe in equality, right? You open your wallet and give me YOUR social security number, right now, and I will do the same. That's fair, isn't it? Your application doesn't say where you live. Yes, I value my privacy. Do you? If not, will you give me YOUR home address, right now? Do you have a criminal record? Well, has this company ever been fined by the government? How many times has the company filed for bankruptcy? Has the CEO personally ever been indicted for fraud, yes or no? Have you ever been arrested? Where do you see yourself in five years?> That depends. Where is this company going to be in five years? We need to see your credit report. No problem, I'll give you that just as soon as you give me the personal credit report of the CEO. We require you to do the work of three people on one salary. No problem, just pay me three times as much money. Why should we hire you? Why should I work for you? Why did you leave your last job? Why did the last person to hold the position you're offering leave? What are your weaknesses? What are YOUR weaknesses? How about my future immediate supervisor and co workers, what are THEIR weaknesses? Do you have any questions for us? 1. What are the worst aspects of this job? 2. Why did the last person leave this job? 3. What are the exact personal relationships between the boss and my future coworkers? 4. What is the turnover rate in this job? How many people fired/ quit in the past three months? 5. How many times have customers or former workers sued this company? 6. Can I see exactly where I will be working and talk privately with future co workers before I accept the position? 7. How long has this job been open?

But some red flag words and phrases for me are, family orientated usually means no boundaries and dysfunctional, fast-paced means chaotic, unstructured and disorganised(perfectionist), numbers based- they only care about money and quantity and couldn't care less about you, you are just a machine to them, 'hungry' usually means they want their sales staff to be desperate( means the managers aren't the best sales closers to begin with). I was ghosted after the written job offer. The Hiring Process involved a phone interview, a Skype interview with 2 managers, reference checks, credit checks (a pre-employment credit check stays on your credit report for 5 years by the way) , and criminal checks. Which I passed all of them. When I finally got to read the final contract 57k plus health insurance, it forbid workers from finding/working a second job. I then ask if it was ok for me to work at my local charity for 2 hours a month (as that is my line of work). The HR Talent Acquisition Manager emailed me saying she was more than happy to support that type of secondary employment but had to ask my potential future manager that if they were ok with that too. Then at that point I was ghosted.

Hello?" - and my Ping = 1 at 89mbps on wifi, not even on my ethernet cable yet. 2) "How do you deal with stress? Will just leave like the previous candidate complaining that he could no longer handle the pressure?" - Yikes! Looks like the interviewer painted a picture of how they handled the previous employee. 3) "If you make it to the next level of this interview, the client is a really busy person. Are you sure you will be on time for that interview? We don't want to waste her time, okay?" - Uhm, this is the part where my gut could no longer take it. The red flag that I seen from an interviewer was that I was not "passionate" about computers when I told him that my goal was to further expand my career. Also, he was too casual in the conversation by talking about Overwatch, a video game, which caught me off guard because I taught that we were talking about the job not a game despite the company being a gaming hardware business. It just gave me a bad impression of the company overall. Never heard an employer of some sort to say that you're not passionate enough in your field because the interviewer did not like my approach towards solving issues. Also another company had a small quiz basically testing your knowledge. There was a reference sheet attached to it, and I was filling it out just to hear the lady saying that I'm cheating because I pull out my phone to write down my references. Gave me a bad impression of the company overall that does not think thoroughly about their procedure. I think it's good that I did not get the jobs because I would have a terrible time at those jobs and could been making less money on top of it.

In that first interview, what do you think the interviewer based their opinion on while telling you that you were "not passionate" about computers? Because you didn't know enough about the video game you mentioned? That's a very rude thing to say to a candidate. In addition, I believe he had a bias that you should follow what was a better product and he was heavily leaning towards AMD than Intel. To where I wasn’t biased on the products as long one or the other were at their best for their value. He didn’t like it that I thought Intel was better than AMD, and this was prior to Ryzen 2 series release. I was just waiting for results from public information for Ryzen to prove itself rather than jumping on board with it when it first released. I just think that’s where the two connects, he wanted someone that had a perspective like his that followed up “what’s best” because others said so without thinking further or questioning it because “common sense” that it’s so good. I knew that the company pretty much built gaming computers, but I think the final verdict was when he talked about the manufacturing about the keyboards and how they sell for less than Razor branded keyboards. I wasn’t well informed about manufacturing keyboards or manufacturing industry at all which turned him off. I have had my fair share of red flag interviews. The one that stands out to me the most was when I had an interview where not only was the interviewer late, but whilst I was answering the questions, he kept looking down at his phone. I stopped speaking and just said "I am clearly wasting my time, thank you" and left. I've also had: - Unable to answer the overall culture within the workplace - What flexibility means to them and answering "staying back passed 5pm if required" - Being asked if I have kids or a husband or how old I am because I look too young (I was asked this at 30 by someone 26) - this is actually something they cannot ask in Australia as it's discriminatory - Dancing around the topics of promotions, bonuses, pay rises and not directly answering (to me this means they don't do any of these) - Saying they think WFH is lazy (bonus when they include "I like to see what everyone's doing") - Advertising salary between $xx per year and $xx per year then saying it'll be the lower amount until proven "worthy" of higher amount - Interviewing you for one position, then upon hiring stating they will start you off in a lower role until proven "worthy" of interviewed role (this happened at a job last year I was POACHED from another company into. Big mistake) Plus many more.

All good points but another very important thing to ask is who you'll be directly reporting to and is there a structured chain of command. There is nothing worse than having multiple bosses, being pulled in different directions, with each of them wanting you to prioritize their tasks. The high turnover in a position as you mentioned is one of the biggest red flags. Even if it's a new position it's good to ask how long other people in the company have been in their current roles. Arriving a little early and asking the receptionist (or whoever greets you) how long they've been in the company and if they like working there is always a good idea too. Being early also gives you a chance to check out the restrooms and time to watch people coming and going and see if they look happy and the type of people you'd like to work with.

If I don’t work fast, the teacher will get upset. Back in August, I was written up because I was absent while I was on probation, HR told me if I don’t fix my absents, I will be terminated from the job. When I told my job that I have a family emergency, they told me I could not leave, and that I had to stay at work until 6pm. The job doesn’t care if I have family emergencies, or doctors appointments.

Wow, I am so sorry you've been going through that. Unfortunately these situations have become so frequent, which is why we need the right support system to deal with them. And something there is actually no point of dealing with them. Loved the part about "working “fast paced” basically I have to work fast until they burn me out." Which is 100% truth and which means you should stop listening to it. Not feeling good at work can only be handled during some time, if it becomes chronic and persistent, it's time to leave!

I'm a 40-year career veteran of the IT industry and I have to say, the problem I keep encountering is that potential employers rarely tell the truth. A job candidate really needs someone on the inside to get a fair and realistic assessment of the potential employer, management's competence and the workplace. Yes, you can ask searching questions, but if you are dealing with an experienced interviewer, he or she is going to be pretty adept at dodging them, or outright lying to you. No hiring manager ever responds to questions like "Describe the manager's leadership style", "how effective is management?" or "what are the other team members like?" with "Well, I'm an authoritarian asshole, management are incompetent parasites and your potential coworkers are complete imbeciles and morons".
@meekoosh

Many years ago I interviewed with a company who decided that having all candidates come in to interview at the same time was a good idea. Talk about feeling like cattle. This was supposed to be a professional level position. During the multiple interviews there were constant interruptions by others involved or not even involved in the process. The main hiring manager started up a conversation with some coworker passing by right during our interview. At the end of roughly 3 hours of this ordeal, the HR person asked what I thought about their new hiring process. I was young and remained polite, and lied saying it was ok. I wish I had walked out in the first 30 min when they held first interview all in one room with all candidates explaining why they should have the job. Horrible & glad I didn’t get the job

Another one is when the interviewer asks you illegal questions. There are questions that are off limits in a job interview setting. Questions about ethnicity, religion, nationality, political views, age, gender, disability, health conditions, finacial background (vehicle ownership and living situation), sexual orientation, current marital status, current family background, marriage planning, family planning, arrest record because an arrest is not a conviction, military background and in some states previous salary. All questions must remain job specific and you shouldn't be rejected employment because of things your personal life. Now let's not assume the illegal questions are always out of malicious intent sometimes the interviewer didn't know it was illegal however if you notice a constant pattern of inappropriate questions then there's malicious intent.
