In the past two years I have left three jobs because of toxic workplaces. Sometimes I think that I might be the problem. Then, I stand up for myself, in my heart and in my head and tell myself that something better is out there…And I deserve it…

Look deep inside you and trust your gut and the chance is very small that you are the problem. Write down what you saw at that job and say to yourself: would you find this normal for someone else to happen to? Gaslighting is real. On top of tap, employers love it if they can put the blame on you. They want you to quit, so they don't have to pay severance pay!

The biggest problem in today's corporate world is that companies expect you to have this weird cult like devotion to them but they don't hold themselves (or their senior employees) to the same standard so when we start working there and we see a very obvious difference between how they treat us and how they expect us to treat them that's when problems arise. I'm a professional with many years of experience and rare skills, and whenever I go to work for a company I tell them that they are hiring me for my skills and experience. I'm not a robot and I'm not there to boost anyones ego, I'm not a "yes" man. If you don't trust me and you want to micromanage me I'm not the man for the job, if you're paying me the amount of money you're paying me then you need to treat me like a professional and not some junior engineer that just got out of college. Finally, I'm a very friendly person and I'll back over backwards for my co-workers and managers but I think alot of people see that as a weakness to be taken advantage of and thats also where I clash with people because I treat people the way they treat me and unfortunately alot of people like giving abuse but they dont like taking it and that's what the toxic work environment is really about. We have a short time on this earth, don't spend it in a place that makes you unhappy for no reason, you work to live, you dont live to work.

Totally normal and especially today as the society is so much more distracted from our own intuitions and humanity - the industrialized grind (before sunrise and still going after sunset) mindset is not in our evolution with rates of anxiety and depression undeniably revealing such. Dark triads getting an unnatural advantage to less well rested and thus less mentally bulletproofed and grounded overall employment to set boundaries and defend their needs (greater stress and energy required - less fluid and natural as it should be, more pent up with less exercise too). A big one is morning exercises even a quick walk everyday to bring back that natural fluidity to advance through the job market to a greater fit and tolerate less of what's only parasitical to our growth and health and authentic self. It's weird when some conventional wisdoms say work requires complete self sacrifice - why? Raising a child should require most of the sacrifice of personal needs for those early years - hah, I think a lot of corporate industries have essentially exploited this caregiver part of our instinct for their own gains... for their baby! It's harsh and probably inhumane for the economy to have evolved to a state of needing most mothers of very young children to still work fulltime for a family's income to meet basic needs - that's a huge problem and the mental health of younger increasingly daycared and absent parent (absent father) generations is increasingly revealing that for sure....things more important than money and resources, the healthy bonding, attachment styles, and humanity of our future generations. Seeing employees and management boss each other around and refuse to accept that varying personality types, speaking styles, cases of mental health exist is madness and fueling turnover rates for sure.

I worked for an abusive boss for almost two years because the pay was good and I lacked confidence in myself. I had a "nervous breakdown". I found the phone number of the employee who had worked for him just prior to me and I called her. She too had left for the very same reason. Since then, I won't take one ounce of abuse from anyone at a job. I've left four jobs this year in a matter of weeks when it became clear the abuse wasn't just a one-off event (it rarely is!) Got down to $200 and I was panicking but I start a new job tomorrow and I'm getting better vibes from it. Less money but that's okay! Life is too short to let others mistreat you period. You'll pay a price for it and it isn't worth any amount of money.

The main reason why I clinged to some toxic jobs is the shame of having a short job stint on my cv. I had 10 jobs in 5 years, not all toxic, but it's 10 and not 6 or 7 because of the toxic jobs. It also made me think that something was wrong with me, until I did a lot of research. I read a lot of labor psychology books, I joined a union, I re-evaluated my capitalist mindset (although the problem is more corporatism), I read the Antiwork subreddit, I wrote messages to people who did testimonials in the union paper on their toxic jobs because I'm a lawyer and sometimes I give them my legal opinion or information, and it's so eye opening. I never thought that as a lawyer I would be struggling with this myself. The worst types of jobs are where there is a lot of money involved.

I always left when my job compromised my morals and values, which is very much of healthcare nowadays unfortunately. There is so much greed in this industry it is revolting and disgusting. It’s a very sad state our country is in regarding healthcare right now. As a healthcare provider, I don’t even have health insurance. The "donuts and candies" can show up as spaghetti thursdays, (empty) fitness rooms, literal candy in the lunch room, constant pies that everyone brings for any birthday to constantly try to get some serotonin out of your brain and to make you fat and slow, they do "bring your partner to the company party" to fade the line between work and private life,... every candy is poison at work. I worked in customer support/sales/care and eventually managing tech support employees (in a way), which summed up to 12 years of experience in 3 different companies. The last spot was a top 10 IT company in its field. If you watch KZbin, chances are you saw the ADS with it at least several times. The thing is, it was fun the first year or two when it was developing as a company. Once it got to bigger level, that's where the real face of the management showed up. I did not have raise for more than 1.2 years and the last raise was around 10% of my salary. Several people I managed went to another company and started making 100% higher numbers than I did with at least double of their experience. Everything ended up with landing to a very toxic team that by the way consists of women only (it is quite rare in this company but happens). At this point it really challenges my mental health but I cannot leave cause of economical situation in my country. In simple words there's almost no job now, and on top there's a warfare here so most companies either leave or don't hire people from my country cause, well, we can die at any point.

I agree on all the points except the responsibilities. The society doesn't dictate the moral responsibilities we have towards our parents and our children. We're the support for our parents in their oldage and we have to raise our children to the full potential. Both of these require steady money and certainty. I'm not sure about the U.S., but in our country, most people cling to the worst jobs only to feed their families... the people he/she loves the most. Here, many of us live with our parents and our children together as a one big happy family. So, naturally, the earning members have certain fear of the breakdown for even the simplest living needs minimum money. Moreover, the pandemic scared many into believing that your family may get destroyed within a few months if you lose the steady money. I don't think most people has an option to overcome that fear. After all, happy family keeps us happy even in the worst of times. And I think that people cling to that certainty for this. It's better to see a smile on the faces we love and cling to a crappy job than to pursue our own happiness risking the fallout of everything. Most developing countries may understand this scenario. Again, I have no idea how it is in the U.S.

I became a lawyer because I love giving legal advice. But after working as an attorney, and as a jurist at a bailiff and a notary, I realised how all these worlds are only about one thing: how to steal as much money from the client and the system as we can. There are barely any good people in this world, because you literally have to have no morals or heart to do this job. You do have to have brains, but even that is not that spectacular. They're not even happy! They are always cursing, nagging, speeding with their ugly BMWs, cheating on their wives, complaining of burnout and weight gain, and they are ridden with mental disorders like schizophrenia!

At occasional stoplights, we will see a person with a sign, or a person soliciting help...I gave the person one or two dollar bills. My boyfriend at the time asked why. My reasoning, as a young person, was, "if I were in that situation, I would hope that someone would think to help me" and his response was..."but you'll never be in that situation". I found that interesting because I didn't place that confidence or reasoning or trust in myself, whereas that boyfriend did.

I believe a lack of being selective with work, people, and communities we "actually" resonnate with and merely "settling" with what's thrown at us is part of the toxic jobs problem. It seems like for the longrun, there's only a fraction of these things out there that truly resonnate with us. Going through 7-10 jobs, relationships, friends, communities, etc with many ups and downs before finding a great one with overall exponential growth and alignment with our self and self-respect seems pretty normal these days, and especially these days with so much distraction from introspection and really doing the self work and learning what our real values and goals are that don't magically appear from birth nor become mostly clear by our 20s either. At-least in America, there's this notion of the "grind" requiring a sacrifice of our self and soul... corporate sacrifice ... amazing benefits but a servitude of the soul and going home to merely Netflix and a nap of a slumber. It's only encouraging of an early demise with dozens of toxic stress ailments if there's only settling for toxicity convincing the self that this it is and life is meaningless. However, it's not exactly the stress itself, but the "type" of stress that counts. The stress of the gym, the stress of the learning a new language, the stress of building a masterpiece you believe in. The productive stress that creates health, strength, mental backbone is the real grind that matters. Excuses like "well, we need money, just do anything" - no, make wiser choices and do what pays not only money but personal growth - don't sacrifice the soul. Our fears need gradually callusing into wisdom, the barrage of harassment and exploitation of our fears is hardly the way to strengthen them (in the long-run that is... short-term can still provide growth) and must either be confronted or simply moved on from as life is very short, 70-80 years average.. that's short and not something to worry about but simply is and must be stoically embraced with a smile at all the potential to explore and engage life - make it meaningful and keep it going in the growth direction over the settling and shame directions. It's a number, the life matters more, the living and feeling a motivated, curious, excited, intriguing, goal fulfilling drive to live is certainly one purpose.

I have been working more than 30+ years in Retail/Merchandising/Customer Service related roles, some managers pushing you to do jobs or tasks that your not interested in doing, the lack of tools and resources to do the job properly. Is it time to leave after 20+ years with time invested in a company not knowing if things will get any better? Now I tell people that I know to keep learning (online education and certifications courses) and if your young to keep your skill level updated and not to stay with one company more than 2 years, explore your options, add value to yourself.

What if it's not the job itself that is the problem, but one's mindset? I have a job that is, by all appearances, pretty amazing. But I still feel unhappy, and I don't believe a different job would make me any happier. I think it's my own mindset that's making me miserable.

Yes but also know you can't just blame yourself for that sadness. Empathy will heal that issue, but also a positive work environment could influence it as well.

I too worked in a toxic medical clinic as a provider. I stay too long because I thought I wasn’t going to be able to secure a job that was as flexible. Nevertheless, I was out of work several times for very serious medical problems while working there. All the while I knew it was related to the stress from the toxic or environment. Looking back at it now, I regret not leaving sooner, but I just didn’t want to go from toxic job to another

Although, I was not a provider...our stories have some similarities to it. If I wasn't as strong as I am, by the grace of god....I might've had a nervous breakdown, after what they put me through. Mistreatment...for a very long time, until I got the complete boot, and they did the unthinkable. Nothing but cruelty and vile individuals. The providers, the professionals, and those that carried themselves that way....were the only semblance of normality I was able to find solace in. Best of luck in your new endeavors.

It is a story we tell ourselves that we need to be “responsible” for our children. What about the responsibility to have the adult capacity to make intentional life decisions? Children would be much better off with a dad that knows how to use his heart to make holistic, life-affirming decisions than one who is constantly angry and stressed due to a “responsible” job. No wonder so many American young people have felt abandoned by their materially focused parents and chose to be soothed by drugs and alcohol. So many social repercussions of these toxic jobs. Not to mention they are mostly entirely corrupt and destroying the planet. Yea, real responsible.

The company I worked for didn’t care who they hired anytime I worked with someone it shouldn’t be the same pattern I’m here to walk not babysit a grown man are woman about your problems are what you know I’m here to work I refuse to be antagonized by my coworker with their bullshit I’m trying to work leave me alone bye 👋 it didn’t pay me enough it was hard labor that didn’t pay enough! So I walked out out with not feeling bad and I have a job now that works for me!!!!!

I worked with an interim manager who was an arrogant narcissist and liar. This person simply felt better and smarter than everyone else in their mind, especially minorities. That person would say things to me like, "No one wants to work with you." A gaslighter deluxe. I can't stand the thought of that evil manager. The presence of that person made many people miserable, and the work environment hostile. I would also see the cursor hovering over my screen, remotely, when I was writing reports. A work colleague had notes changed, in a way he didn't write. Just because it's on an electronic record or written by someone who doesn't like you, doesn't make it true when someone has control of your screen like that. In my section, 3 people quit, including myself. We were all minorities. The work commission and EEOC did nothing. I was told, "Oh, you just didn't like your job." What a joke.

Regarding schizophrenia, analyze what kind of food has been a common thread throughout the family's history. I believe what we eat can heal us or make us sick. For example, a high fruit raw vegan diet has slowed, hopefully reversing, my psoriasis.

Here's my situation. I am also stressed out. I needed to request a transfer. I could not handle the site anymore. Waiting for my boss to find me a new site. I had to leave the lawfirm account. Too much drama, too much politics. Putting a dead mouse inside my security blazer with an attached threatening post-it message is the straw that broke the camel's back. It is a toxic environment. I worked there for almost 2.5 years. The silent treatment became unbearable but the dead mouse and threatening note did it for me. Monday night was my last day. I am now a man without a site anxiously waiting to start working at a new location. People are really mean which is the main reason why I love to be alone. Thank God I have enough sense to save money for a rainy day. I hope to be at a site in the next few days. You say?

My job is really toxic, they've accused me of things I never did. My managers are terrible, the school cares more about the test than the student's education. I reqlly hate my job!!

When you're ill, especially mentally ill, you often don't work, or work less or in a (toxic) place below your qualifications - how can you pay medical bills with that? Public, semi-free medical care is a great achievement of civilization. It's sad that in US, as well as in other parts of the world, it's unavailable.
