Tihs lady (I have just leaned that her name is Rupa Ganguli) was so busy giving poses and showing off her "beauty" that I had to close my eyes, to avoid being embarrassed by her mannerisms. I was hoping she would ask some relevant questions of Vilayat Khan Sahib. Unfortunately, she did not ask a single useful question. Like millions of others I am a life-long fan of Vilayat Khan Sahib, but he himself never gave a brisk sincere interview to anyone, and I never enjoyed listening to him speak either. But the fault chiefly lay in the inability of interviewers to ask brisk to-the-point questions. If I had interviewed him, my question would have been : "Your father Inayat Khan Sahib's Sitar baaj was based on the tantkari ang. Can you elaborate on the characteristics of the tantkari ang which is no longer in vogue, and why has it disappeared out of our musical tradition?" The only time I ever met him, I said, "Vilayat Khan Sahib, I listen to your Bhairavin Ragmala recording often, and it seems to me that you had used the Kharaj dhaivat as the base note instead of the regular Sa note. He immediately said, "Yes, I used to call it ragmala from this note, now I call it Sursagar". In that particular recording, he had explored at least 7-8 different ragas, but always came back beautifully to the Thumri he had established as a point of reference. But if he had wanted to, he could have explored 20 other ragas for his ragmala. He was the greatest ragmala artist ever to have graced Indian classical music, and the reason lay in his genius which could see connections between various ragas, and he knew how to slide back to the original theme everytime without effort.

Rupa Ganguly, with her irritating mannerism, coyness (Nyakami) is definitely not the desired interviewer for the Maestro.
