I had a squad leader who spoke fluent Spanish, German and English. When he spoke English and Spanish, no problem, but as soon as he would speak German, I would get this overwhelming "ill" feeling, a visceral pain to my core as if my guts were shaking and I couldn't handle hearing him speak German. I have heard countless people speak German with no adverse effects, so I don't know what it was about the way he spoke it that gave me that reaction or why when he spoke the other languages, I didn't have the same reaction. An extreme case of having a different timbre and tone while speaking another language, I guess.

Love this interview. I'm so honored to have had a 20 minute conversation with Edward back in 2000 in Trolley Square SLC. Our kids were playing video games and he was playing Skeet ball. I walked up and whispered, hello Eddie?, so not to draw attention. He turned slowly and said, yeeees. Lol. Then we sat at a table and talked about Holland and my time stationed in Germany. The body is a Boogie Body not a Fender. That particular neck with the black headstock is a Charvel neck he took off of the Bumble Bee Charvel strat. You can see he covered the logo/Charvel name because he was mad at Grover Jackson who owned Charvel at the time. Grover was selling stipped strats like Bumble Bee without Eddies consent. That's why he painted Frankie Red. I believe he got a cease and desist on Grover to stop.
@solarismoon3046
@solarismoon3046 5 ай бұрын
@@JR-to8sn No - Eddie painted that Frankie guitar red because ESP was copying his guitars in JAPAN and he wanted "turn the corner on them"! He even said so in a Guitar Player Magazine interview. That Bumblebee Strat was painted for Eddie by Wayne Charvel who also made the neck and body for that guitar as well as the Frankenstrat . Grover Jackson simply owned the company and the only guitars that he made were the prototypes for certain guitars. He left everything else for Lynn Ellsworth and his crew including Wayne Charvel. Boogie Bodies was a line of guitar parts that was available for Jackson and Charvel guitars at that time. They were a certain model unlike the argument that they were a separate company. These were a Charvel exclusive when Grover Jackson left to start his own company by himself.

This isn't directed towards you personally Michael, but i feel i have to get this in the commentes. Alot of people comment on these dutch videos with them. All this "I can't believe they STILL KNEW dutch!? Wooow". Ok? That assumption is from people that only know one language and have a small frame. The fact that Eddie has adapted a more american accent, that it shows, does only mean that he has an accent, not that he forgot the language. LOTS of bilangual people, or second generation immigrants speak their native language with an accent adjacent to the country they're currently living in. It's a sign of devotion if you ask me. Move from Texas to Nevada and tell me you wont shift accent at least a little bit after a while? 😀

What's interesting is the Van Halens are actually Dutch-Inodonesian. Many Dutch-Inodonesians left Holland in the early 60's for the US because of the very cold reception they received in Europe after being expelled from Indonesia following the revolution. Nothing like success to change people's minds about who is welcomed.

When Eddie passed away i went over there and layed some flowers at the entrance/doorsteps of the apartment building (it's pretty small, one entrance leads to 6 apartments). When i got there, there was a single rose with a card and a couple of candles. I wrote a letter for the occupants of the apartment building explaining what was going on and if they would be so kind and not remove the flowers and all the other stuff. I put my emailadres in the letter and only one occupant replied me with a very nice email. This happend to be the occupants of the aparment the Van Halen family lived in. The apartments are mostly occupied by students these days due to the fact that Nijmegen has a large university (i'll get back to this later..). Over the next couple of days there were more flowers, candles, some signs and the (local) tv network (you have to understand that local tv means jack shit in The Netherlands..) came and did a piece. Some asshole was interviewed, made it all about himself and tried display his awesome Van Halen knowledge . It barely made the local newspaper. It made the news on national tv. But Ed died the same day that Johnny Nash died. Johnny Nash is was songwriter from the 60's and 70's and had a hit with "I Can See Clearly (now the rain has gone)" wich was a hit in Holland by some hack (Lee Towers) who covered it. 8 o'clock news.. Eddie van Halen died, Johnny Nash died.. 9 o'clock news.. Johnny Nash died.. 10 o'clock news.. Johnny Nash... You get the picture. That was basically it for ol' Ed in the Dutch media. A couple of years before he died someone started a petition and tried to get a street or a square named after him or the band here in Nijmegen, no dice.. I'll bet they are gonna try again and i'll bet they are gonna fail. You know why? The Netherlands doesn't give a shit about Edward Lodewijk van Halen nor the band. There are a handfull of fans and that's it. Van Halen (the band) has always been shunned for some reason. Within month all the stuff outside the apartment was gone, turns out that those students didn't give two shytes either. And let me remind you, this is not a very nice neighbourhood and it's always messy there so it's not like the flower and the signs was bringing down the property value. By now y'all realize that i'm kinda pissed.. Well, i am and i ain't dun yet.. At the end of each year there's a very popular music show called the "Top 2000 a-gogo" . Very popular as i said and mostly it's fun to watch. Almost every episode they have a live band that play major hit songs in a different style and the guests have to geuss the songs. In this perticulair episode they had some thrown together band with a well known Dutch guitarplayer called Leendert Haaksma and they had a guitarplayer called Lucas Hamming as a guest. Mr Haaksma is not a bad player but compaired to the great players he's mediocre at best. Mr Hamming on the other hand isn't even good enough to change Mr Haaksma strings and i'm being very nice here... Why am i telling you this? Well, they chose this episode to do a little segment about Eddie van Halen.. And as always it's Running With The Devil, Jump and Why Can't This Be Love as if that were the only 3 songs they wrote (And those are the only 3 songs you'll ever hear on the Dutch radio).. Yada yada yada, tapping.. Yada, yada, yada, the guitar technique he uses on Cathedral. That was it.. Mr Haaksma, reluctantly i might add, tried to show the technique used in Cathedral. He got it totally wrong and it's really not that hard. You turn up the amp with a fair amount gain, switch on your delay pedal, turn down the volume on the guitar, hammer on a note on the guitar with your left hand and turn the volume up with your right hand and Bob's your uncle. And when they asked Mr Hamming what he thought about Eddie two hand tapping technique he said the he thought it was tastless.. That really pissed me off.. In all fairness i don not have a problem with people not liking Eddie van Halen, his music, his playing nor the band. It's okay for people to not like something and to express that. But for the people who put together the tv-show.. Is it so hard to get a couple of guys in the studio who liked Eddie and had something nice to say about him? Adrian Vandenberg from Whitesnake is Dutch, he's a contemporary of Eddie, he likes Eddie playing, he knew Eddie personally and he lives in The Netherlands. Anyway, sorry for my rant but i really had to get this of my chest.. The Netherlands should be ashamed for the way they treated Eddie.. And truth be told, the way i feel now, if i ever meet Mr Hamming i'm gonna kick his boney little ass and make him cry.. Have a nice day! (Edit) The show that this segment was taken from was shown on a channel that nobody really watches and it suck too.

I went to Nijmegen to play 2 cover gigs in bars there in January 2019, really liked it. I went to the Van Halen family place, and tried to pay tribute to Eddie, did a video where I butchered Eruption and Ain't Talkin' about Love on my travel acoustic guitar, but at least I took the time to go there as a pilgrimage, I knew I wouldn't be goint to Nijmegen everyday, even though it's a lovely city... Until I found out a friend of mine lived there, so I actually might go back lol!

@@gokhanersan8561 You're right. Europe, in general, didn't appreciate Van Halen neither. But it's a real shame that the country he was born in never took him seriously. Well, it's one of the many reasons I'm not very proud to be Dutch.

If you are a guitar player you know what I mean. Mean streets, on top of the world, Panama. Need I say more? People,don’t know how ground breaking -young chain smoking and alcoholic Eddie. Wish he would have stopped the cigarettes, it’s what killed him and 2 of my family members too. When we are young we feel invincible-yet we are not.
