Allen played a key part as the kind and thoughtful Alvah in the best most ambitious book on the search for alternatives to the materialist faith , Kerouac's Dharma Bums [1958]. I think the harder drugs were mistake, a blind alley that sidetracked people, and were not helpful to anyone and I wish drugs had not happened.

at 15:08 he mentions "regaining our own senses" which is the opposite of one of Lucien Carr's 3 tenets comprising his New Vision (derangement of the senses) which undergirded the contributions of the Beats. I wonder what accounts for this change. Was it to integrate the political activism he undertook in the sixties? Something else?
