TRIGGER WARNING:THEMES OF SUICIDE
Laura was a teenage girl in the '60s when she found out she was pregnant. With no support from the father of the child and feeling the shame of her circumstances from her parents, Laura found herself in a home for unwed mothers, feeling forced to give her baby up for adoption.
Laura wrote a book about her experience called "You’ll Forget This Ever Happened", and according to Laura, one of the most rewarding things about writing her book has been readers reaching out to tell her how much her book has helped them as well as increased their knowledge of women’s lives in the 1960s and the Baby Scoop Era.
Laura L. Engel, an award-winning author, is originally from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She moved to San Diego, California over 55 years ago. She lives with her husband, Gene and their beloved golden retriever, Layla. She is the mother of 5 adult children and 10 adored grandchildren.
Two scenes from Laura’s book have been performed live on stage at the San Diego Memoir Showcase and she is published in four Shaking the Tree anthologies as well as many online magazines including Writers Digest.
Today finds Laura’s life-long dream to write a book fulfilled. Her award-winning memoir You’ll Forget This Ever Happened was published May 2022 by She Writes Press. It became a Best Seller on Amazon and finalist in the 2023 International Book Awards and in the 2023 National Indie Excellence Awards. In August of 2023, Laura was honored to be selected as the Local Author for San Diego’s Downtown Central Library.

I am 72 years old and I am an adoptee. I read your book a couple of weeks ago and loved it. This last summer I went on vacation to Louisiana so the location of your story was relatable to me. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you so much for sharing your powerful story Laura. This is such an important series Melissa 👍🏽. My birth mother had another baby less than 2 years after I was adopted. I had a good adoption but the wound was real, who knew ? Me my mother and I. Sadly my mother took her life before I met her. So.much loss shame and pain. Thank you for your wise advise. Thank God we have each other and are speaking out now❤️

Thank you for this episode. I started the search two years ago for the baby my grandmother had in 1959 that she was forced to give up. She passed away in 2001 and I found out about my aunt. I’m now 33 and have done dna tests and have tried finding answers. Laura’s story gives me a perspective from my grandmother that I will never get. My grandmother died with this secret. I’m just hoping I can find my aunt to let her know my grandmother loved her and didn’t want to give her up. My grandmother was 16 at the time of birth and the bio father was Filipino and my great grandfather was very racist. My heart breaks for my grandmother and the women like her and the babies that were taken.
