The colonel did NOT deserve 50% of Elvis' income. Elvis sang, performed, and did all the work. What a shame all these people who used Elvis. It seems like everybody used Elvis and still do by living off his name and wannabes. There will never be another Elvis. I sure wished I could have seen him in person but I was too young at the time. I was just a kid recall watching Elvis in the movies on tv thought he was the most handsome man ever then when he sang I was in love. Elvis the most handsome man ever, golden vocals, charisma, set his career aside to wear an Army uniform, given the Medal of Freedom which was long overdue, the greatest entertainer ever "The King!"

It truly is the sad fate of many big stars... who trust others to run the business end of their affairs. @Flora Braswell Do you know that there are only a few of your kind? Elvis had a hard time getting into the NBC TV special because Parker didn't like it! Elvis could not go to Europe or Japan to give concerts because Parker most likely had problems with laws. Parker was only interested in Elvis giving him a stable and steady base of earnings, innovation was a risky threat to Parker because if it didn't work out, those resources would be lost. Elvis nevertheless kept trying new things until maybe he didn't feel like that anymore.

The "Colonel" was the biggest sponger in Elvis's life and death. No manager is worth 50% of their client's earnings, regardless of how good they are at their job. There's no denying that Parker was a smart man, but he was also a very selfish and ignorant man. He effectively stunted Elvis's growth as a performer and Elvis unfortunately knew it. Elvis was such a smart man too, but he put up with Parker's selfish behaviour for a long time. What a big dichotomy. The day Elvis signed with Parker was unfortunately the beginning of the end of Elvis's professional life. Those who say that Elvis wouldn't have been big without Parker are purely speculating. It's like saying Andy Gibb wouldn't have been big without his brothers. Yes, Andy's brothers, Barry in particular, promoted Andy, but Andy, like Elvis, had the talents and personality to make it. If not for the "Colonel", Elvis would have pursued his dreams and made an even bigger impact on the world. Say what you want, but it was a combination of things that killed Elvis, including the incessant greed of Parker. RIP, Elvis. You will never be forgotten and your legacy will live on forever. Your music is immortal. RIH, Parker.

@@johnsmith-wc8gs, that's debatable, John. Elvis was easily led by the Colonel and was the Colonel's own cash cow. Elvis was too soft to tell the Colonel to eff off. However, near the end of his life, Elvis began to realise how detrimental the Colonel was for him and his career and was going to sack the Colonel after the tour in September of 1977. Elvis wasn't an idiot.
@alexcarratu5554
@alexcarratu5554 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsmith-wc8gs, John, at best, Elvis was led easily by the Colonel and had mixed emotions about him. Firstly, Elvis may have liked the Colonel in the sense he may have felt a sense of financial security once he met Parker in 1955. Don't forget that Elvis came from poor beginnings and then suddenly had a shit load of money. Secondly, however, the Colonel was a user and Elvis did know that, more so towards the end of his life and had plans to sack him after the tour in September of 1977. Thirdly, Elvis was too much of a softie to boot the Colonel out of his life. Add to this, Vernon had no backbone, so Elvis didn't really have a positive male role model in his life. However, Gladys did have her suspicions on the Colonel. She didn't trust him and rightly so. Gladys Presley was a good character judge. Had she not died back in 1958, she would have convinced Elvis to sack the Colonel. Gladys was probably looking down in horror at the way Elvis was being treated by the Colonel after her death. Elvis wasn't dumb though. He knew many of his so-called "friends" were sponging off of him and the Colonel was too and made plans to sack people who were using him.

Elvis was a fabulous actor. A couple of his movies were very good, it was the scripts that didn’t show his true talent. Elvis was adorable in GI Blues but it wasn’t an Oscar worthy script. The Aloha concert via satellite was the pinnacle of what Colonel Parker could have done for Elvis' career. After that, Elvis should have ditched that dirtbag and found another manager. For that matter, he should have ditched him even after getting out of the Army. Times change in a long career, so does an artist as they grow. Under new management, Elvis could have done more of what he creatively wanted to do, took better control of his path and got his life back. He was with the Colonel for way too long! It was a business only relationship and the Colonel took Elvis for everything he could. When he first saw Elvis, all he saw were money bags, that's it.

If Elvis's mother hadnt died, his life could have taken a different turn. Without his mother, Elvis should have allowed Priscilla to cooperate in his professional life, instead of keeping her like a doll at home. She was no ignorant. She proved it later, by saving Elvis' entire legacy and keeping him well alive over 40 years later. ´ Elvis was completely influenced by the Memphis Mafia dudes. Also thanks to them their marriage did not survive. They were jealous of Priscilla. They were constantly taking women to Elvis. They didn't want Elvis to marry. They wanted Elvis at their disposal

“Elvis said he wanted to do more shows” What utter bullshit. Parker would scare Elvis into performances by exaggerating his finance problems. Sure Elvis said I want to do the show but only after Parker manipulated him into it.

Elvis probably did say that. He had to do more shows because Priscilla had gutted him financially in divorce court.

This guy was an illegal immigrant and that is the reason Elvis never performed outside the U.S. Ironic really - I'm sure he or Elvis could have said on going to the White House - "we have this small administration problem" and the president would have waved a hand and the necessary documents be noted. So the world was deprived and also the Presley fortune because the "Colonel'' was too naive too think that being manager of the biggest name in the world would not have got him his permit to stay.

Elvis was at his best fifties and early 60s that's when Elvis was Elvis he had great acting and singing talent and first class charisma that was squandered misused and over commercialized Parker was the king of bad artistic direction it was terrible and definitely not good for elvis Elvis has so many gifts and talents he did not get to use in a proper manner Colonel Parker was a terrible man and promoter have a great day the true essence of Elvis and all his gifts and talents definitely was in the wrong hands Elvis demise was for that reason but Elvis had his best moments in his could touch him Colonelprime nobody Parker three thumbs down

@@seanfitzpatrick4730 probably should have gotten a different manager either early - mid - or late career - if it wasn't working out. Why didn't he? don't think it would have been easy but there's something about responsibility when two people have a relationship business or otherwise. very difficult and tragic.

Could he have been a great actor? The director Michael Curtiz said yes and he directed Elvis in a movie and earlier Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. Elvis didn't get better songs because the Colonel wanted a percentage of the songwriting/publishing. (Just ask Dolly Parton). Elvis didn't get bigger roles (though he was offered) because the Colonel would never allow Elvis' name to be second on the bill to any other actor (John Wayne -- True Grit, Barbra Streisand -- A Star Is Born, Jon Voight - Midnight Cowboy, Hal Wallis' production of The Rainmaker with Burt Lancaster). This information from a reliable source. The Colonel kept Elvis out of foreign concerts because the Colonel didn't have a passport. Illegal immigrant. The Colonel almost sold Elvis'management to a conglomerate in the '70s and almost moved from RCA to Atlantic records -- when the Colonel's gambling debts got serious. Elvis' income taxes were always done by the IRS itself. His only investment/tax shelter was racketball courts franchise but that never materialized. Hill & Range and Gladys Music (and some others) were Presley's two major music publishing firms. Many songs submitted to him and those he would sing would ultimately be owned by them. This was nothing new in the music industry. Elvis was one of the richest entertainers in the industry despite those who screwed him over. Yet -- he could have been even richer if he had a financial adviser and a good marketing planner without the Colonel involved. But...who knew? This was all new to a star of his magnitude. There were no other stars demanding the money Elvis got for a single performance. All of that with no social media, no major interview shows (Barbara Walters, Johnny Carson) or appearances on other network entertainment programs, no interviews in Playboy, etc. He was solely an entity unto himself. Who in the entertainment business can do that today?

Todd claimed there was only a 50/50 split between Elvis and the Colonel when it came to licensing and merchandise, insisting: “But it was never a 50/50 split on his earnings.” Todd has been the president of The Elvis Presley Fan Club and met Elvis as well as the colonel in person.

Col. Tom Parker was old school. Elvis got hooked on amphetamines back in the 1950s, before he met Pricilla, before he went in the Army. No one could of saved Elvis, but Elvis himself. No one could tell him anything, no one could cross him, he was everyone's cash cow. Elvis died just when music was about to change drastically. His time was up...
