Hm....I doubt that. Nice yes, but I also got the impression he was a great actor and good at personal PR. I doubt he was horrible though, but as nice as he came across? Please. His daughters would not be the kind of person they've turned out to be if he was that keen on being nice. Neither one of them strike me as being the same. Both seem spoiled and self entitled.

It’s very funny about Benmont Tench’s dad. Those 70’s dads really liked their Walter Cronkite or Dan rather. My dad and my grandfather also even at holiday functions. That was it , shhhhh, the news. I’m planning on playing Tom Petty Music all day Tuesday , October 2nd. My sister passed away the same way June , 3 2009. I tried so hard to help her ............anyway I named a tree after you , beautiful tree it’s on Kennesaw dew West , I walk for exercise and the first time I ever really got caught in the rain. I was a mile from my house so luckily I saw this wide , very strong tree and ran under it squared down for 20-25 min , although it seemed that long and it totally protected me. I was so thankful and I thought of you and how gracious you seem to be and the great music you post so the tree’s name is now Allyn Kessler. True story. Thanks for everything, I will be checking out all the newest stuff you send me from Tom Petty.🙃🧚🏻‍♂️♥️

Let's just remember one thing Tom Petty was not a f***** up dope head drug user, he put all his energy into making great music but what he did do when he should have rested and not finished out the tour, he worked through the pain and suffering and using these messed up pain pills so that he could make it through and it killed him, that is awful and sad and I can truly say but he will be so missed, he was an awesome person, musician, and a friend to all that new him and ever work with him.

To be honest, Tom did have an issue with drugs (a heroin addiction in the 90s to name one). But, not for a second do I believe that it takes away from his character or brilliance as an artist and an overall amazing human being. Tom had his demons, but they were never greater than himself.

Ron Carter I know what it's like to be in constant pain. I had an accidental O.D. In 2012 from my RX! The paramedic in the ambulance saved my life. It's hard to find a balance, especially when you're over medicated. Tom Petty was a great song writer/entertainer. I was so sad to hear of his passing I've always loved his music! I went to H.S. with Dana & my heart goes out to her at this time. I know she misses him terribly. God bless her! I'm glad she's putting out his music!

Same for me...I sincerely have spent more time with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ music than with anyone or anything else...I miss him tremendously...I navigated through the jungle of life swinging from vine to vine in the form of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Albums. Ever since this set has come out it’s been beautiful I listen to it non stop just like I used to when a new Album would come out. They were fairly consistent throughout their career and put out an album just about every 2 years and that would fill my soul with joy to hear that new music and enjoy it and loved to listen to Tom speak about well just about anything really!! I still love all those things and out of of anybody that’s a famous person Tom was my guy!! I was in high school when Kurt Cobain died and besides him I think Gerry Garcia and SRV were the first big musicians I had been old enough to see how people reacted at the news of their deaths and not just something I seen as just rock music history in general. Although I liked that music I had no attachment to the artist or the music like Tom and the band and every member of the Willbury’s. Life’s not the same now that he’s not here...It never will be....My best friend is gone...I thought he would have been one of the last Rockers standing, living past Rober Plant, the Stones, Bob Dylan etc etc...Sad and Shocking but Sadder is that it could have been prevented!!! I don’t know what to conclude when I gather all the circumstances of his death...I’m not sure why a man this important and being rich would not have had medical care professionals around to help him or just have an assistant around to take care of his wants and needs and not leave him unattended. 66 almost 67 year old Legend who’s not been doing good medically and nobody around him knows basic CPR even. On the 911 call she doesn’t even mention that this is Tom Petty and she apparently knows no first aid at all.

Hi. I lost my mom (aged 77) to Alzheimer's about 4 months after Tom passed away. I feel your pain. Alzheimers is such a terrible, terrible disease. My mom single-handedly raised me and my brother and sister. All good kids. Lucky kids really...lucky for my Mom. I love Kings Highway (I think Into the Great Wide Open may be my fav TP/TPHB album) and I know why you feel that song. I often think of my Mom when I hear Something Good Coming from Mojo. Thank you!!! 💕💕This NPR radio piece from today is so beautiful! To hear Dana Petty share moments from Tom’s last day was deeply moving. “You and me, babe and the road ahead.” It’s clear that he was thinking deeply about their future together. In the audio of the LA Times interview that was recorded a week before his death, Tom talks a lot about the years of making music with the Heartbreakers and how much he has always loved performing. When the interviewer asks about future projects with the band, he shares a few thoughts and then reveals that he fell before going on the tour and put a “pretty good crack in my hip.” Then he says “I’m probably looking at getting a (hip) replacement” before doing new projects. He also says something about how he believes that the band will always make music together, “unless one of us were to die, God forbid.” Tom Petty was enormously fulfilled in his long career and he didn’t plan to stop making music. I believe that he had an incredibly happy marriage with Dana. He loved his daughters, Adria and AnnaKim and his stepson, Dylan and he adored being a granddad to the darling Everly. He was in an unbelievable amount of physical pain and had to use the drugs prescribed to him to at least take the edge off. I believe that he knew he had serious health problems and that he had to make each day count. Rest in Peace, Tom Petty. Deep gratitude and love to you for all that you (& the Heartbreakers) gave us over 40 years.💘💘💘 Deep love to your family for sharing you with us.💘💘💘 May you all find that the next year brings meaningful healing and much love and peace. 💖🧚🏽‍♀️💘🔆

We just bought our first house after 16 years in condos and apartments. I wanted to get the "Runnin Down a Dream" movie poster for the living room but I found a hardly used copy of the "Echoes" record and framed it. It's a haunting picture of the band with no words, kind of a almost spooky black and white picture. It's the first thing you see when you enter our house, and Tom Petty's music will always be a huge part of my life

Mr Petty, was a great big soul filled with amazing music he offered to the heavens... we all shall pass, so lets remember the greatness of Tom. His ability to harness angst, passion, pain, joy and all things rock and roll is more than mortal.. his music will live forever and shine down into the future. We need the good things in life, the things that make us happy, that make us forget for a while the shit that is out there.. and Mr TEP gave us that in truck loads, whether in in his bands, backing Dylan, in the Willburys, supporting Stevie Nicks, or his solo records.. Never forget the greatness. Listen everyday to a tom Petty song and understand how great life is. Tom it better.. reflect it back to him, and honour his talents. God bless his wife and family.

Thomas Earl Petty 1950-2017 On October 2, 2017, I lost a best friend. My best friend passed away from a cardiac arrest at the age of 66. My best friend was Thomas Earl Petty. I became a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers music in the fall of 1996. I had won a CD player in a raffle in 7th grade at my high school and my brother had all of these CD’s to listen to. I listened to a few before putting in a CD where parts of the cover of the CD itself had been torn off somehow. I pressed play eagerly awaiting who or what was on that CD. When I heard the first 5 notes of “Free Fallen’”… I was sold. I still have that CD along with most of the band’s catalog of music; 282 songs to be exact. As well as both of their concert DVD’s. When I listened to their music, I felt happy. I could always count on the band to make me feel better. I would hear a song and sing it at the top of my lungs. Since Tom’s sudden and tragic passing, I have heard 5 songs of theirs; “Running Down a Dream” and “Saving Grace”, from my IPOD, “I Won’t Back Down” which was sung by the crowd at last week’s UF-LSU game and “Learning To Fly” from my local classic rock station last Thursday morning, which wakes me up, and finally, I posted the song “A Mind with a Heart of its Own” on my Facebook page last week. When I first heard Running down a Dream, I started welling up. Same goes for all the other songs that I heard. I never did see the band live, but I wish I had. I will never forget playing “Last Dance with Mary Jane” for my high school English class my senior year. The song had something to do with my mid-term at the time. It’s the only song that I know from beginning to end. In 9th grade my guitar teacher, Mr. Glen McCarthy, taught us “Free Fallen” before class ended one day. Now when I listen to his music, I’ll cry a little. All of his songs will take on a more metaphorical approach to me, especially “Flirting with Time”, from his Highway Companion album which was released in 2014. The chorus of “Flirting with Time” is as follows: “You're flirting with time baby flirting with time, and maybe Time, baby, is catching up with you” He certainly did flirt with time. Rest in Peace, Tom.

Lori, I am totally with you on this but I listened to the interview and what I heard was Benmont Tench furiously backpedalling on his sulks over Free Falling not specifically made the way things used to be; he blamed Tom for being heartless when Howie Mendel died of a heroin overdose, which was simply not true; ganged up on him with Stan Lynch when there was a time in the band where solidarity was crucial; I profoundly admire him as a musician but in all the podcasts I've caught over time he never stands up to the plate and defends Tom when someone is gunning for him. There were worse interviewers than this one; what did Dana do to dispel the myth of continual abuse of painkillers (except when he was on the road). She could have clearly said what everyone now knows; he fractured his hip just before the 40th anniversary tour after it was sold out; everyone said; we can wait; you can have surgery; the audience will be back and his reply was, typical Tom; I'll go on even if I'm in a wheelchair, which is what he did very often on others' behalf when confronting adversity; would not back down. And she was with him day and night -- what exactly did he do ever that escaped her attention? Her emotion was real, but she was already re-writing history. Out of guilt? It was my impression that she was the iron maiden, interceding on Tom's behalf when Tony Dimitrades (sp?) wasn't available to deal more harshly than Tom was capable of when difficult decisions had to be made. And Mike Campbell would have nothing to do with the Hunt for Red October carried out exclusively by Dana and Tench to produce this posthumous album. If anyone showed true unadulterated grief it was he. Like so many of TP's admirers I, like you I am assuming, think of him as the Unmet Friend, and grieve. But loyalty counts for something -- don't get me started on Jeff Lynne -- it reminds me of that Yeats poem that begins, Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold, the best of us keep silence while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

I was so apprehensive about the build up to the release of this posthumous album; thought the Company Boys had hijacked it. Dana moved me to tears. Benmont the professor and also a guy who I am not convinced ever grew up, but loved him with his whole soul. Thank you Dana, you were so brave; I was glad that things got sorted out musically; if anyone is an American Treasure, it should be you as well as Tom. I know you are no stranger to loss; and a very strong woman not afraid of emotion. As I know you already know, it starts to feel like treachery when you can laugh, when there is a moment when they are not with you, but they are. For always. So so glad Tom found you.

Such a workaholic, but lucky us! I wish he would have taken better care of himself so he would be still be with us. Is that selfish? Im sorry he was in so much physical pain at the end, that makes my heart hurt. His music was interwoven into my life and millions of other peoples lives too. He will always be in my heart. I wish he had known that a hip fracture has to be taken care of, surgery and rehab, not continuing on. It's just makes me sad today thinking of it. I had heard he was stubborn so I do get it. He seemed like a genuine person...and of course a good musician.

This comment in 2019, Backing up Lori Madrid for what we all know but with the current scandal over irresponsible prescription of opioids let's get this straight; a life--long instinctive champion for the cause of correcting injustice, and given his renowned stubbornness which dictated in his brain In 1978 when he was almost mauled to death by out of control fans and bloodied but unbowed, clothes in shreds, that not only must he get up and finished the set, but take responsibility for the insanity of the fans turned into mob …. lost control of the sentence. Despite his reservations he never lost his feeling of ultimate indebtedness to his audience; one year on a broken hip? This is not Jim Morrison, this is a stubborn beloved artist who put his audience first. NOTHING anyone can do or say will ever take away that visceral loss that Dana Petty experienced. My opinion of the posthumous release of American Treasure is of no importance; I know, having had the great experience of a Dad who loved me and my sister and encouraged us to not only do well, but be good people, that the current court battle between Tom Petty's widow Dana and his perhaps ruthlessly devoted older daughter would have astounded him. It has to stop and without a lot of information I am not qualified to comment but Adria, you are doing yourself harm trying to hurt someone whom your Dad loved without measure. Just fucking stop it.

Tom Petty was deeply addicted to opiates since the 1990s and there's no way he'd not be surreptitiously at the least using constantly. I get that as opiate addicts we conceal, hide, omit, and sometimes outright lie but she's not describing the way opiate addiction really works and either doesn't know/understand or is trying to protect his legacy

I have already heard the music and there was a brief shut down this morning that seemed peculiar to me. If indeed Dana and Benmont Tench are responsible for this release I would love to know why affection and misplaced loyalty took precedence over the quality of music. Where are Mike Campbell and Tony Dimitriades in this decision-making process? I concur with the critic cited in Bogdanovich's doc Runnin Down a Dream, who, in contrast to Dana, did not deem Echo his best work (and by the way I thought Paul Zollo's Conversations with Tom Petty has been vastly neglected), but he said something that resonated with me: If he had written more confessionally this could have been a better album; but he would have been a lesser man. I have heard released tapes where he was completely out of his mind on booze or drugs and I don't think that would been the way he would want to be remembered or thought of by his daughters. I thought it was an industry ploy; now I am truly angry.
