For a lot of us, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the soundtrack of our lives. To me, The Last DJ, MOJO and Hypnotic Eye are the culmination and best of their career. I don't think I have heard one track on the radio from any of these albums and yet they are some of the best emotionally and artistically by this band. So much passion, heart and soul. After seeing this 13 minute video, I now know why this is true for me. I miss this band so much but very thankful I have their music to enjoy.

Springsteen rocks, but Tom Petty and the heartbreakers are definetly the greatest American rock band ever. No doubt about it!!
@scottsodyssey24854 жыл бұрын
I considered the Eagles the greatest American band for years but when they didnt follow up Hell Freezes over with an original album immediately and just became a regurgitating tour band ($$$) for the next decade plus they lost my interest. And when they finally came out with the dumpster fire of Long Road Out of Eden I was done with them. Id been a Petty fan for years but that's when I put Petty and the Heartbreakers past the Eagles in my opinion. And looking back I don't know why it took me that long. Tom Pettys body of work far surpasses the Eagles. I don't get ga-ga over celebrities very often but when the news broke that Tom Petty died that was a truly a sad day. Still listen to him daily 2020.
@aammdj4 жыл бұрын
These guys are among the greatest but sorry, nobody owns the title of "greatest American rock band ever" more than Aerosmith. They have remained all original for a half-century...minus the one record and tour in the early 80s. They remade themselves to fit into the MTV era. They broke ground with the melding of rock and rap with RUN DMC. Sold 150+ million records...almost twice Tom's commercial success. They have remained relevant (as did Tom) through every musical twist and turn of the last 5 decades...and they're still going strong. I will admit their end of career output was nothing close to as strong as Tom's was but they are truly the kings of American rock.

It’s been 5 months now and I’ve gone from listening to everyday to listening first thing in the morning. Of course, I’ve loved Tom & really just thought of the “Heartbreakers” as Tom’s band, but Wow! NOW I am always going to think of Mike Campbell as one of the BEST guitarist’s of all times. And Benmont Tench... Can’t think of the Drummer’s name but Stan Lynch also. I LOVE how Tom says he just comes in with a song (or basically a concept) & then let’s it firm as each member contributes! They REALLY ARE SOMETHING ELSE.

Such a true music legend and it's the really only the greatest musicians that have the kind of longevity and talent that he had when it comes to making so many hits over the years. The world definitely needs a better taste in music and I hope that people can find an artist that resonates with them like Tom Petty has resonated with me, because he was such a unique talent and should be celebrated as one of the greatest musicians of all-time. I've listened to the Heartbreakers since '76. They've always been very good (like in the mid-eighties when lots of seventies rockers "lost their way")...but quite often they've been excellent. And since basically "Wildflowers" ('93), they've done whatever they wanted, not worrying so much about making hits, as Mike Campbell comments. And since then, they've become very probably the best band in the USA. Bar none. When I got back and listen to their 70's and early 80's stuff, which is great, I cant' help but feel that somehow, Petty and the Heartbreakers have actually gotten BETTER with time. Like a fine wine. I am actually the very proud owner of #97 out of 1OOO Produced to the public... it’s a Mint condition 1991 Rickenbacker 66O 12 String Tom Petty Limited Edition.... Ive never really been blown away by any signature guitars, however this is by far my very favorite guitar ... very low action also Rickenbacker set the string spacing as close as they could without the strings vibrating into each other ... giving the effect that the two string pairs begin to feel like one string ... seriously... I could play the 12 string RIC the day I got it, never ever played a 12 in my life, friends in the neighborhood and family Actually can’t believe I’m as decent a player as I have evolved into.... huge Thank You to TOM PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS.... FOR INSPIRING ME TO LOVE VINTAGE GEAR.. LEARNING TO FLY F - C - Am - G (Repeat over an over and over until end). No other chord changes at all not even the choruses... if you don’t have a 12 string use a touch of Chorus to try to achieve that octave overtone Rickenbacker Sound it comes fairly close, close enough to play this song .... chords are easy lyrics are as well and Fun as hell to play once you get into the groove of the strumming pattern... jangly RICKENBACKERS. Tom and Mikes love affair is Rare Rickenbackers.... anyways the guitar is patterned from Mike Campbell’s Rickenbacker that Tom is wearing on DAMN THE TORPEDOES. That particular 12 string belongs to Mike ...

Well, compared to anything about Prince, for example, who held the world at arm's length, that's for sure. Petty really let Zanes hang out at all kinds of things, and gave him hours and hours of one on one interviews over many months. But he only read over the final draft, gave a few comments, and held to his promise that the book was Zane's. The result is good. To me the interviews with Tom's daughter Adria were the most interesting and revealing. Rock on.

@@marimbadearco There was 1 thing he asked Zane to change. It was back from the '80's and was about Bob Dylan....so he did go back on his word once and he explained to Zane why...Zane took it out. TP was friends with Dylan and even though Zane said it was really nothing "bad" or even negative in Zane's opinion, TP didn't in any way want to do anything to tarnish his friendship with Bob Dylan. Their friendship was more important, so Zane took it out without any problems. This info came from an interview with Zane.
