For a lot of us, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the soundtrack of our lives. To me, The Last DJ, MOJO and Hypnotic Eye are the culmination and best of their career. I don't think I have heard one track on the radio from any of these albums and yet they are some of the best emotionally and artistically by this band. So much passion, heart and soul. After seeing this 13 minute video, I now know why this is true for me. I miss this band so much but very thankful I have their music to enjoy.

As usual, Petty's instinct to let Campbell loose on this record was the right move. Man, Mike is just a RIDICULOUS player. Incidentally, Scott Thurston is a very undervalued member of The Heartbreakers. He can do a little bit of everything but his harp playing really opened up this record.

I’m just now learning about the different members of the band, and I feel bad that this clip is the first I’ve heard of Scott Thurston. It’s been 5 months now and I’ve gone from listening to everyday to listening first thing in the morning. Of course, I’ve loved Tom & really just thought of the “Heartbreakers” as Tom’s band, but Wow! NOW I am always going to think of Mike Campbell as one of the BEST guitarist’s of all times. And Benmont Tench... Can’t think of the Drummer’s name but Stan Lynch also. I LOVE how Tom says he just comes in with a song (or basically a concept) & then let’s it firm as each member contributes! They REALLY ARE SOMETHING ELSE.

I considered the Eagles the greatest American band for years but when they didnt follow up Hell Freezes over with an original album immediately and just became a regurgitating tour band ($$$) for the next decade plus they lost my interest. And when they finally came out with the dumpster fire of Long Road Out of Eden I was done with them. Id been a Petty fan for years but that's when I put Petty and the Heartbreakers past the Eagles in my opinion. And looking back I don't know why it took me that long. Tom Pettys body of work far surpasses the Eagles. I don't get ga-ga over celebrities very often but when the news broke that Tom Petty died that was a truly a sad day. Still listen to him daily 2020.

These guys are among the greatest but sorry, nobody owns the title of "greatest American rock band ever" more than Aerosmith. They have remained all original for a half-century...minus the one record and tour in the early 80s. They remade themselves to fit into the MTV era. They broke ground with the melding of rock and rap with RUN DMC. Sold 150+ million records...almost twice Tom's commercial success. They have remained relevant (as did Tom) through every musical twist and turn of the last 5 decades...and they're still going strong. I will admit their end of career output was nothing close to as strong as Tom's was but they are truly the kings of American rock.

I remember reading one time how Jeff Beck wouldn’t even ride in the same limo as the band; had his own separate limo, no hanging out ....That’s not THIS band! I LOVE the doc where Tom’s driving a car loaned to him by MTV, he looks like he’s maybe 19 or barely 20, and giving a tour of Gainesville with the guys in the car, no fan belt for AC, and showing the gator farm he used to work on. What a RIOT that one is!

I've listened to the Heartbreakers since '76. They've always been very good (like in the mid-eighties when lots of seventies rockers "lost their way")...but quite often they've been excellent. And since basically "Wildflowers" ('93), they've done whatever they wanted, not worrying so much about making hits, as Mike Campbell comments. And since then, they've become very probably the best band in the USA. Bar none. When I got back and listen to their 70's and early 80's stuff, which is great, I cant' help but feel that somehow, Petty and the Heartbreakers have actually gotten BETTER with time. Like a fine wine. Thanks for posting this!

Such a true music legend and it's the really only the greatest musicians that have the kind of longevity and talent that he had when it comes to making so many hits over the years. The world definitely needs a better taste in music and I hope that people can find an artist that resonates with them like Tom Petty has resonated with me, because he was such a unique talent and should be celebrated as one of the greatest musicians of all-time. I don't want to call them "hits". That's degrading to Tom and his bands. Tom wasn't about hits, and then just pumped them out one after the other. Love all of these guys forever. Sometimes, peeking behind the curtain can be a dangerous thing. You may see something you wished you hadn't seen, you may feel different about the subject. Not in this case...if it was any more possible to love TP & The HB's, this documentary has done it. What an honor to see true musical genius at work...all of them. This should be required viewing for any fan of music, especially musicians...from beginners to lifers. This is what real talent and real players look and sound like. Guys that could have phoned it in from a successful 30+ year career but the love of music and each other compelled them to work for something bigger than themselves. Not having to chase the next hit but at peace with where they were at in their career and lives. Thank you to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers for sharing their music & talent with us.

I am actually the very proud owner of #97 out of 1OOO Produced to the public... it’s a Mint condition 1991 Rickenbacker 66O 12 String Tom Petty Limited Edition.... Ive never really been blown away by any signature guitars, however this is by far my very favorite guitar ... very low action also Rickenbacker set the string spacing as close as they could without the strings vibrating into each other ... giving the effect that the two string pairs begin to feel like one string ... seriously... I could play the 12 string RIC the day I got it, never ever played a 12 in my life, friends in the neighborhood and family Actually can’t believe I’m as decent a player as I have evolved into.... huge Thank You to TOM PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS.... FOR INSPIRING ME TO LOVE VINTAGE GEAR.. LEARNING TO FLY F - C - Am - G (Repeat over an over and over until end). No other chord changes at all not even the choruses... if you don’t have a 12 string use a touch of Chorus to try to achieve that octave overtone Rickenbacker Sound it comes fairly close, close enough to play this song .... chords are easy lyrics are as well and Fun as hell to play once you get into the groove of the strumming pattern... jangly RICKENBACKERS. Tom and Mikes love affair is Rare Rickenbackers.... anyways the guitar is patterned from Mike Campbell’s Rickenbacker that Tom is wearing on DAMN THE TORPEDOES. That particular 12 string belongs to Mike ...

I'm still waiting for them to release the full Heartbreakers version of Help Me. As far as I know, it doesn't exist except in this video... Come on guys, I need it! I love that thing.

Excuse my cynicism, but In this day and age where the bar has been lowered to the lowest common denominator-disingenuous, manufactured, manipulated, fraudulent crap-it gives me the best feeling in the world knowing that TP and the Heartbreakers still put out great works like MOJO-genuine, sincere, real and with soul. Keep fighting the good fight Tom!

This is both great and sad. Tom Is in too much pain to stand and he is flying on opiates. A testament to how much we are missing.

These guys have MOJO and maybe a little voodoo cuz they have put a spell on me. I cannot stop playing these new songs - at work, at play, at home, in the car. And when I heard them at Red Rocks it nirvana. These guys only get better with time. When you think they can't get better they do. No one comes close to em.

A record centered around Mike Campbell's new guitar. A very, very good idea.

Tom Petty is such a modest composer. Wildflowers album is a wonderful example of his ability to compose with the orcestra the the background. Absolutely love it. It's what sets this band apart from so many, the detail and complexity in the melody. Like Dr. Dre, they 'perfect the beat.' Doesnt get much better than a heart felt Heart Breakers song!

I see now musically why Stan Lynch was "criticized". He was great at 'jamming' and creating..........but the guys, or Tom, wanted more of a machine-like drummer = Steve Ferrone.

One of my all time fav bands - Ferrone is a killer player - I do miss Stanley's deal though - he made this band swing better.

Mojo is an old African word that means "magic." The old French movie "Pepe Le Moko"- which inspired the old cartoon character "Pepe Le Pew"- used a variation on the word, and inspired Al Pacino's wide ties in the "Godfather" movies and - some say - inspired the whole "Noir" genre of films. But most people today know "Mojo" from the old Muddy Waters song. It means "magic." And Man, does it fit. The band, the album, and Tom Petty, all are magic. Fortune passes everywhere.
