I got so excited when Gerard said how Smashing Pumpkins weren't grunge because they weren't grimy loud mixtures of sludge rock-thats-almost-metal and thats what grunge is.

So many similarities with Kurt and Gerard and while it is heartbreaking that Kurt was murdered at 27 (yeah I don't believe in the official suicide story), I am glad that Gerard was able to pull away from his music for a while when he felt that it was too toxic for him. Gee is now in his 40s and we are lucky we still have him. I'm a fan of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain in the 90s before I heard and loved MCR music in 2000s. And yes, I agree that Kurt is the music god of his generation just like Gerard is with his during the time MCR records came out. Similarities: 1. Kurt hated that his band is being identified as grunge as much as Gerard hated that MCR is being identified as Emo. Kurt said Nirvana is a punk band and Gerard has always said that MCR is a rock band. 2. Both liked wearing costumes and had crazy (but artistic) videos. 3. Both had raspy voices though Gerard has other ranges tio. 4. Both sang about teens/teenagers and the music videos were both about a band playing during a pep rally that has gone crazy. (Btw, I don't think MCR copied Nirvana's concept. The song was about teenagers so of course the easiest location to see teenagers would be at school) 5. Kurt said that his band has a "mission" implying that their music helped people. Gerard said that MCR is an idea and has always encouraged people to love themselves and to follow their passions. 6. Kurt and Gerard are both articulate and when they like the interview and the questions, they gave answers with depth. 7. Follow up with #6, both really hated their popularity at a certain point. 8. Both "ended" a certain music era because their music was really good and disruptive. Nirvana ended the glam hair rock era and MCR, while there were other bands like them, ended the tshirt rock/alternative bands and became the band that "started" guyliners, make up, and costumes of their generation. I'll add to thks when I think of more reasons.

I love my chemical romance's music and they seem really nice and down to earth people, however, I dont know them, so, I cant really comment on who they are, i just hope they continue to be true to themselves and their music. Keep up the fantastic work MCR.

The lucky lady was reportedly Eliza Cuts, a stylist for the band. So is Way now attached to a person, if not a place? "No I'm actually not. So . . ." he pauses, the noise of the Chili Peppers taking to the German stage filling the silence. "Sometimes things don't work out," he eventually says.

I have nothing against MCR or Gerard, and to his credit he didn't seem to agree to the comparison, but MCR was never on the level of notoriety and fame that Nirvana hit. For that matter, emo as a whole never had a band as big as Nirvana or Pearl Jam, who were the biggest things around during their time. Even post-grunge had much bigger bands, like Creed and Matchbox Twenty, which seemed to be the last era of rock musics domination. It's not MCR's fault - everyone was so focused on rap in the 00's that there's no way any rock band could've hit the level Nirvana did. The 90's were just a different time.

Very much agreed. Emo was the music that was popular when my teenage angst was just starting to take shape, but I quickly discarded it when I got into Nirvana. It's hilarious to me how people are now looking back at the music of my teenage years and contrasting it with the music of today. I did the same thing with that music and the 90's music I was diving into. What turned me off of Emo was that it just felt like a knockoff of other cultures like goth and punk. I never understood the glorification of self harm either.

Smells like Teen Spirit came out 30 years ago and has amassed over a billion views on KZbin. Has even one MCR song done the same? Secondly, I am well aware of the origins of Emo. It started in DC with Rites of Spring and Embrace and then evolved in the 90's with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Cap N' Jazz, and American Football. The bands that then went on to incorporate pop punk influences (like MCR) brought the genre into the mainstream in usually cringy fashion. Ultimately, this is all subjective, so like what you like.
