I actually think Ruth was the saddest character in the whole film.Yes she kept two people who should have been together apart but I still think it's really sad she died without love and then eventually she died alone. The scene where they take out her heart and then she dies and her body is just left alone is one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in film

I know this comment is old but in the book there is a scene where Ruth pretends one of the guardians gave her a special pencil case, she just wants to be loved. It's so sad.

I adore interviews like this. Where the actor or filmmaker just goes deep into the story.

Love you Keira, you're one of the best actresses we have today. And when you describe Ruth, gosh you sound completely right but I totally missed these aspects in Ruth when I read the book. Brilliant insight indeed!

Film is depressing AF! But it's brilliant and I've watched it over and over.

+txmoney Watched only once and it is enough... I happy that I saw it that one time, the movie is good, Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan are some of my favorites actress - but really, is too heavy - this movie made me feel like I was drowning and could not breath or do anything about at all. So I will not watch it again.

The MOST!! Usually when I see a dystopian future movie( or in this case alternative present?) I can detach myself from it, because after all, it's sci- fi. But this one it's actually believable, like what if society went down a different path and this was present day reality? It's believable because there is no futuristic technology in the movie. If anything it almost looks a little retro. Forced organ harvesting is probably happening somewhere, it's been said that's what happens to people executed in China. But to be raised knowing your fate is to die young and accept it? Crazy if it happened like that

I agree with Keira actually, when I watched the movie I got the sense that Ruth was in love with Kathy, definately, not in a creepy lesbian way, she wanted her to herself, i dont think she really understood her feelings, but by taking Tommy it meant she could stay close to Kathy, whereas had Tommy and Kathy been together, Ruth would always be the gooseberry.

I do not think Ruth was in love with Kathy... YES, their friendship is very complicated, but what does this have to do with what Ruth feels in general? If there is any sort of feeling they have it is never complete or as strong as it is for normal people. In the book, even Kathy and Tommy do not show an overwhelming flow of emotions when they get together in the end. Kathy doesn't even get to be with Tommy during and after his last donation, upon his own request, because he doesn't want her to see his deterioration towards his completion, and they are both Ok with not being together in Tommy's final days. These "clones" were treated with caution and never given any sort of emotional support at any stage of their life. They love but in a cool manner. they hate but with no genuine malice. they feel afraid but they do not panic. they have no excess of anything unlike normal human beings. And maybe this moderate and neutral sate of mind is what makes them never think of running away or trying to find an escape.

Ruth in the film is a bit more likable and her intentions towards Kathy are different as well. I wouldn't compare film Ruth to book Ruth.

Am i the only one who hates Tommy? i mean why the hell he didn't reject Ruth if he likes Kathy more -.- i just...fucking boys, ruined both of the girls friendship, Ruth is also at fault but Tommy the most cause he didn't do anything at all, just went with the flow and it made me mad.

***** Kathy was with other guys in the book? It would make sense if the guy she likes is dating someone else...tho I haven't read but only watched the movie, is the book more different?

I think you're looking at this story from one very simple and elemental aspect - the love interests between these 3. However for me it wasn't just about Kathy and Tommy getting together and pushing Ruth away from themselves, this is a story about three people trying to find their purpose in the world, trying to grasp the idea of living, because they don't have much time. I agree with gorboy, Tommy was all heart, and kind of animalistic, in terms of not thinking really, he rather acts instinctively. Ruth obviously would do anything to keep Tommy, and Tommy's only purpose was finding happiness and peace in my opinion, which he could have with Ruth. He might've wondered why he always felt closer to Kathy, but "breaking up" with Ruth wasn't really an option for him. These guys weren't thinking like a "normal" person would think, they weren't raised to find true love, to break up and get together and have fun, through their lives the only thing they were supposed to care about was remaining healthy and becoming successful donors. Sorry for the long post x
