One year ahead of European elections, the leading MEP for tackling disinformation and foreign interference explains what the European Union is doing to ensure a fair and transparent suffrage whilst strengthening free speech.
Sandra Kalniete drafted Parliament's two sets of recommendations on how to deal with the thread posed by disinformation to democratic institutions.
In this interview, she looks at how algorithms and social media networks have changed the way we consume information and asks for more support to independent media and investigative journalism.
Kalniete also calls Europe not to remain silent in front of manipulations of historical facts, a practice she says is widely used by Russia. "History repeats itself if we do not take a stand for the truth", she alerts.
