Hi Sylvia. I worked there in Korean town for 6 months in 2018 and I'm quite knowledgeable about what's going on there. Yes, what you said is true that the Koreans there are very different compared to South Korea. There are many reasons why they don't want to do an interview. They are afraid of being seen by the government. The others are living in the country illegally and don't pay taxes and the others have pinay wives and are afraid of being caught cheating. the others are in debt because of gambling or there are pending cases in your country and now, the Philippines has become their hideout and above all, the others are involved in illegal prostitution especially the other victims are minors. I hope you are fine, but next time be doubly careful in the places you go, especially if you are not familiar. The Philippines is beautiful but like people it is not perfect.

If it's true then PAMPANGA'S KOREAN TOWN should be under surveillance or be investigated by the authorities. And maybe the LGU allowing them should be investigated too. I think there's corruption going there. #DILG

There's also this stigma that if a foreigner goes to Pampanga, they go there for sex tourism. Maybe they just don't want to be seen on camera because that's not what they went to Pampanga for - or maybe that's what they went there for and they are avoiding getting seen/recognized by friends/family.

I've been there many times. We actually conducted a thorough investigation of that area. The "Korea Town" in Angeles is like a city run by mafias. Over 70% of people there are either criminals who are hiding from the government/immigration or Koreans who have pinay mistresses (they told their wives they are on a "business trip"). The police car you've seen there is actually the one who accepts bribes.

Maybe on the next interviewing session, you have to promise them that you will cover their faces, and their voices hidden by a Voice changer. Maybe you'll get more Koreans in Pampanga to accept an interview. You know, some top local media people can interview criminals here in the Philippines and even make them to confess why did that, or why they did this. But these media people always deliver their promise to hide the faces of these criminals and change their voices with a voice changer.

I suggest you try first searching history about the area or location where you are about to conduct the interview so you may know more how to approach them. I grew up in that area. not anymore now. originally the area is a red district for Americans and Japanese. there is Filipino slum area just across the bridge, Anunas, but they dare not do crime to Koreans. Filipinos in the area need Korean investors for jobs. they have a dedicated police force just for Korea town. It's not 100% safe. assassinations and robberies happen BUT most are organized, also they have power over the police, like mafia or Triad type. Friendship or Korea town Koreans are taught to be cynical, skeptical, etc. They survived in the area with that mindset. not all are bad. some are even evangelists. Koreans have their own bus system. they take them to malls, tourist spots, etc. That town is continually growing FAST. It's a safe haven for Koreans and Filipinos welcome them.

Sylvia and Moy, always get a few male friends to accompany you while filming. Watching kdramas from 15+ years ago, when the storyline is of Koreans who get involved in criminal elements, they flee Korea and settle in the philippines or China. But now, with younger Koreans, I think it's more of business opportunities and English education. Still easier to evade legal problems in the philippines because corruption/bribery is rampant. Just please be careful.

I'm Half-Korean Half-Filipino from Koreantown in Angeles - interesting to see this is weird for you since this is what's always been normal for me of Koreans. It's understandable how there are people who'd get the idea of illegalities and women from this video, which aren't completely false, but Koreans around here are just really more serious as I've observed. In contrast, what I got from this video is the realization that Koreans from other parts might not be the way I've always deemed them to be.

I guess its best to interview younger Koreans if you see them in Korea Town in Pampanga and in the morning, noon or just past lunchtime, most likely they are just there living for school or having fun in the area. Others who are rejecting might be either for their privacy or involved in some operations, businesses or things that are perhaps hidden haha. Maybe wrong timing lang and wrong type of people to interview during those hours you went there most especially at night. We don't know the real reason but in foreigner frequented areas with bars and the like at night whether in Pampanga, Manila etc may not always be the best place to do an interview. Better luck next time 😊

That area especially, is basically a s*x tourism spot, not just that neighborhood, but the entire city of Angeles (it was originally because it was close to American bases). Which is why no one wants an interview. A lot of the people on the streets are just short-term tourists. They're probably married, or have girlfriends back home. On the more dangerous side, some of them are gangsters. Which is where the unfair stereotype of the Philippines comes from in Korea. Which is ironic because the gangsters here are mostly Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. You'll have better luck in other "koreatowns" in other cities in the Philippines. Which don't have that kind of widespread red light districts.

My former employees are some normal Korean dudes with Korean family and their children, some are restaurant business owner, others are members of Korean Yakuza who one of them said he had a girl cousin that is a kpop idol lmao.... Those Koreans are different from typical South Korean you see. Most of them afraid being known or trace by your government or local government not paying taxes, doing illegal activities, some are running because of big debts the acquired when still living in South Korea, others had some illegal business and using some frontman, many are members of syndicate especially the Yakuza Korean branch, the last ones are the businessman who cheated on their wife in Korea who had another wife here in Philippines 😹😹😹 locals/foreigner/same Korean.... But don't worry most of the person you've encounter are mostly Korean nightwalkers who can only go outside whenever it's dark. To be frank, Angeles is well-known for its prolific red light districts😅. So, most probably a lot of them (especially the men) refuse to be shown on camera for reasons which are pretty obvious. In the case of Korean business owners, they are careful / mindful of sharing information in interviews to avoid being possible targets for crime (kidnappings, robberies, etc.). You could maybe get better interviews in other major cities around the country with a sizeable Korean population like Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, or Davao

Aside from the things going around there that some shouldn't be privy of we must also not normalize that we can just shove down cameras on private people's faces. It is a fact that people who lives in PH are very friendly and accomodating but please dont get frustrated if you're rejected. It just comes across that people owe it to you to be interviewed for your content then assume bad things if they dont allow you to. I understand your frustration but it also leaves a bad taste that you look upset that you didnt get what you wanted because people just dont want to be filmed or interviewed. It's just a friendly concern because there are places in the PH who are not used to this especially in Sagada. They have restrictions about filming locals there. To each his own.

So sorry that you were a little disappointed that it happens the way it did,but don't lose heart Sylvia, you're a nice human being in and out and I know you'll have a jovial convivial good humoured interview coming in the future, right there ,the first one was a disaster I believe..why don't you do reverse psychology, interview Filipino instead, you'll find it completely different and conversational. .I would love to see you doing that..take it easy and stay sweet....

Pampanga isn't just a haven of Koreans that wanted to stay hidden. It is also the one of destinations of Filipino sydicates, druglords and other criminal minds. Families in government office of Pampanga and those in power are sush over those facts since they are benefiting from them.

I think they have alot of things to hide. Like for their businesses and such. Just like my korean boss, he doesn't give much information to people, even ids if asked by a customer service or banks and taxes. There are so much things to hide. Sometimes it's hard for also as an employee of a korean employer here in Ph. I also need to keep so much info of my boss in business related stuff 😅

I used to live there for 4 years. The reason why people don't want your interview is because it's red-light district. Meaning, it's a known place for prostitution, drugs and alcohol. Hence, as your suspicion some of them might be cheating or there because of those reasons and they don't want other people to know about it. You're correct with the vibe, it's a rated PG area.

Sylvia maybe the Koreans that move to the Philippines are the shady characters, I'm just speculating, I hope their intentions are for the prosperity for the local Filipinos and honest dealings, not criminals with jail background from korea. I hope they are not North Koreans.. There's bad and good people all over the world, I just hope the Philippine Government will be aware of what's going on in our Country On the other side of the Province like the Southern Visayas the Koreans there are peaceful and mostly educated and want to retire in the islands like Cebu, Bohol and other affluent rich Provinces.... just my opinion..☺
