Good unbiased review... For those who feel that this amp is not suited for gigging.... Well you are right if all you use is the amp as is, but I use my CODE25 for gigging with no problems. I will admit that I use a DI Box and feed it through the soundboard. No need to "blast" an amp on stage with this set-up. The bass player uses a small 30w amp with the same DI Box setup as well, All the different soundtechs we have had just loves this set-up over mic's as it also helps reduce the risk of feedbacking which happens now and then due to the mic's picking up the drums... This also allows frees up a drummer from being imprisoned behind those plexi-shields... Sorry for my ramblings, but out of the 35 years of gigging, it sure is nice to have an amp like this that delivers a great sound and not killing my back during load-in's and load-out's....

Probably the best CODE demo I have seen/heard. You actually make it sound decent. That can't be said for other demos. You can still hear the digital toy-like nature, though (no fault of yours).

I 've had one since they came out. The 25 is for home practice, not so much for "beginners." I have the 50 Watt and I'll tell you right now: Ain't nothing beginner about a 50 watt Marshall that'll chase roaches outta the room when on 3! One could easily use it for gigs in a good size room. What dude didn't mention is the company that helped develop the software for the amp: Soft Tube. They created a Marshall plugin, that won all types of awards for their spot on recreation of a Plexi. So Marshall did the smart thing, and got together with S.T., went into the Marshall vault, and used the tech to clone some of Marshall's most iconic amps. The only thing I don't like about the amp is the line in feature, so for recording I slap a decent mic in front of the amp, turn up, and go to town. Great amp. Great review by the way.

They're good amps, I have the CODE 50. People just get angry because it is (because it is sometimes) a little hard to create really good sounds, but once you get the trick, you'll be alright. I only hate 2 things about them, one is that on 25 and 50 versions there is no fx-loop, and the second thing is the compressor is really bad (for someone who likes 80s tones like me, you'd want to buy a compressor pedal instead of using amp's). Trust me, you must work with it for a while. I have created presets inspired in Rush's "A Show Of Hands" tour, Def Leppard's "Live In The Round In Your Face" tour, Starship's "No Protection" and "Love Among The Cannibals" albums and other 80s inspired presets. Once you get the trick, it will become pretty easy to get great sounds from it.

Good review. I sent my first Code 50 back thinking something was wrong with it. The second one was the same. So I decided to spend some time with it. I selected the worst channel, channel 23 Virus and completely altered it to my liking. It took 3 entire days. Now it's close to being my favorite clean amp. For $250 ($299 2019) and three days of learning and adjusting I now have my go to non tube amp for cleans. I adjusted the Tremolo and Reverb and noise gate and well just about every setting. Not really all that difficult. Ha! I made my own MFR Name for this amp, I call it EDOC JAZZ! I put this on the grill so every time I look at the amp I read EDOC JAZZ. Which it is, a fairly good Jazz amp. -Peter

Probably not. These things were not made for that, they were made for home use and beginners. And for the price these things are perfect for exactly that. My first ever amp was a solid state 15w ashton and this thing blows it out of the water in every aspect. These amps are a lot of fun and sound good, some models sound great and some not so great.

Honestly most people love the tone and sound till they find out that it's a modeling amp.

@@survivor1155 I have gigged with my CODE25 in fairly big bar venues using a DI Box to feed it to the soundboard with success. I was seriously looking into these Marshall Code amps (the Code 100H actually) a couple of months ago until I found your channel. It seemed nobody had anything nice to say about the Code series, so I basically started looking elsewhere. There was a good deal on a basically new Fender Mustang V v2.0 through a friend of a friend and I still wasn't sure about it until the guy agreed to come to my band's jam space to let me take it for a real-world test drive. Bought and paid for within 30 min of playing and I couldn't be happier with it after downloading some of your presets. I've since played 3 gigs with it and Fender nailed it on the head. I can see why Marshall decided to get into the modelling game (it likely has a pretty hot market vs true tube amps based on price) but I truly can't believe how badly Fender screwed up the Mustang GT series; all they needed to do was take the V2 Mustang series and add bluetooth/USB mobile device support, an app to make things easier and a wider range of effects and they would've been cleaning house. Anyhow, sorry for the long-winded comment; I wanted to thank you for steering me towards the Mustang. Your demo of the Code series definitely sounds better than the others I've heard, but I have no regrets as of watching this haha. Cheers Shane, thanks for everything!

I have the Code 100 Head paired with a Laney 212 Cub Cabinet. When playing through an extension cabinet (or through the combo speaker if you have the combo model) the "CAB" should be left off. The cab simulation is only for headphones and playing through a digital interface. Marshall doesn't make that clear in their manual and all factory presets have it set to "on" in the default mode. So to get a good sound I think you need to start with the cab model turned to off and check the noise gate setting (too much gate makes it sound sterile with no "character" in my opinion). Still trying to get a "natural" and "full" sound out of the amp...it's been a tedious task as I'm a bit new to this stuff and apparently the resonance and presence can make a big difference so I need to mess with those. All I really want for now are five kick-*ss pre-sets so I can jam rhythm: 1) Clean (w/ a bit of chorus) (as if I EVER play "clean" lol) 2) AC/DC (Back in Black song/album) 3) AC/DC (Highway to Hell song/album) 4) AC/DC (High Voltage album) 5) A generic heavy metal guitar tone. Finally, I want them all to sound as good as when I play through my Engl Rock Master lol.

Thank's for sharing. I've got the Code 25 and it's a very good little amp for home training. Easy to use and edit presets. Some glitches with Blustooth. Most of all => the Marshall sound (You like it or hate it). I like this sound but imho Fender clean are more smooth and sweet. At least Marshall is constant with this sound and they do not try to emulate all the world's amplifier like some other SS cheap amp.

I'm glad you had fun with this amp, i've got one and i think it's fun. It's only a little modelling amp for home so it does have some shortcomings, as you mentioned, but it's easy to use and easy to get a good sound. Some of the ridiculous presets are fun to try just for a laugh, for entertainments sake. It's loud enough to be a problem at home (!!!), but as you mention, not meant for use with a band. I think younger players will embrace the controls and output of this amp but if you have a history of valve amps it's not really suitable. Good one Marshall and thanks Shane for your outstanding demo!

Sounded better than Ive read it does. I try to steer clear of most modeling, but recent amps have been showing that modeling has arrived. This generation especially ( should I use the "Katana" word? ) has been hitting home runs. Given the pace that technology makes advances, one can't help but wonder how they will sound in 4-5 years, especially when the manufacturers start taking it seriously instead of making it a low end bottom barrel product. Hold that thought... Then consider the effect those amps will have on the tube amp market. : ) ... Maybe not run out and buy that stock huh? Thanks Shane! This was a very enlightening review.

I have the 100 watt 2x12 and it is stellar-with tweaking. I also use a MXR equalizer in the effects loop which really helps dial in my tones. Some of the amps a shine more than others, in my opinion. The JTM 45, Bluesbreaker, and Silver Jubilee are my favorites but I have found really cool sounds playing with all of them! For comparison I own a mustang 1 v2, Katana 50, Spider V 240 as well. They are all great in their own right. I think the Spider series gets the worst rap overall, but the “V” series is really impressive when you take the time to dial it in. I have to breakdown and just buy a Helix or Kemper next, lol! Anyway, thanks for the great video, Shane!

I got one of these for 60 bucks at a pawn shop. Maybe because I paid so little, I didn't expect much, but it exceeded my expectations. Had a Mustang III and the Marshall tones sucked. They rock on this. The highs are a bit too high and the lows are a bit too low. But that can be dialed out as Shane said. Presence is more important than treble for removing the ice pick. All in all, a nice little amp that I use for going room to room and in my TV room. Use it much more than I thought I would. My Katana mini doesn't get much of a workout anymore.

I think the Marshall tones on the Mustang actually sound better then on the Code...and the Fender tones on the Mustang are terrible. But overall, I prefer all the models on the Peavey VYPYR, and I have the VIP3. It has a lot of bugs though. Too bad! But it responds better IMO, and the dynamics knob is sweet and adds a lot of spongyness to the feel which is cool! A lot of people complain about not having a DI, but it does if you utilize the headphone out. But it does add speaker IR, though can be bypassed by pulling the plug out halfway, or using a mono jack I suppose? I haven't actually tried that. I prefer the speaker IR. Then I see people say..."turn the speaker IR off", but if you record and utilize speaker IR, what is the difference between that and using it through your PA? That makes no sense to me, to say turn it off when you play but use it when you record. If you like the way it sounds, keep it on...that's what you will hear when you record anyway so why not use it if that's what you like? Personally I prefer it. It gets harsh without it. A lot of times they put in too much sub bass tones in the models, so I go into my Soundcraft ui24r and tweak the EQ till it sounds and responds the way I want. Kinda wish the T. Dynamics knob was part of the patches...but I suppose that may not be possible? Anyway, I had to switch to a silent practice space so this was the route I went for a while. Now I use a pedal with IR's and am impressed with how far the digital stuff has come. A whole lot better then the stuff I had back in the 90s. I mean, night and day!

Had one, sold it cause it is too digital and too trebly no matter how you set the treble and presence and the most important factor that made me get rid of it was that it is impossible to use any OD pedals with unfortunately. So for now I'll stick with Amplitube 4 (cabs only) and my flat AKG headset that sounds better than any of the presets and settings the Code provides. Could you point me to a one trick pony amp, small wattage with headphone output that actually takes pedals well? I already had my Ods (Miab Fiab Viab) type that just need a good pedal platform for them, home practice only. Have it in my list Yamaha Thr10 or 10c, Boss Katana, Vox Pathfinder 15r, Fender Blues Jr, Roland Blue Cube, Marshall DSLc, Blackstars and that little Bugera, but there are so many out there it's impossible to make up my mind. Love to hear your opinion. Thanks, great videos and awesome playing!

I'm looking to buy a new practising solid state amp. I came across a lot of advertisements for Positive Grid Spark Amp. How is the Marshall CODE 25 Modelling Amplifier compares with Positive Grid Spark Amp?

I think it sounds fine but with the phone app it is possible to dial in your tone.... Great review and I have to say it's not bad. Would be just fine in a small tight venue.... Thanks Shane!

I think katana is prefereble, cos it has 12' speaker which is more suitable for guitar sound

Great video as all you do. I have an Amplifi 75, which seems to be kind of abandoned project at Line 6, the tones that people publish on the net are always first versions, so this is a huge handicap. I've seen the Fender GT to replace it. This one is great, you've done a great job, but I'll stay on Fenders.

This one with the footswitch? Or a Fender Mustang III v2 with the 2 button footswitch?

First of all...Tone/good sound...is what the audience is hearing, but for someone who actually plays the guitar knows it's more about feel/ touch sensitivity....I'm a power tube fan and speaker dude, if you can't stop playing then stick with what you have.i own the Code 50 combo and set my personal sounds, all my guitar player buds are buying them,...once you play the Amp you will know what I'm talking about

Marshall code 25-50 vs Spark ?! Which one do we should buy?!
@andrewl51276 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of competition but its not bad in any way and good in many. I have one which I use at home and fortnightly with the footswitch for jams (with a LOUD drummer) and it copes okay and is very light and easy to carry. I bought it to replace a 5Watt valve amp which was lovely but much too quiet on clean to be heard. I initially tried the 50Watt Code (which is probably the one I should use) but I wasn't using much of its volume at all so traded down as I find the 25 cuter (the cheap finish on the 50 is somehow more obvious). I find when jamming that I only use about six presets but tweak them to reduce the jump in volume between a lead and rhythm tone. Also I need to use the footswitch - the App is easy to use at home but isn't really usable when playing in other peoples time.

So, I’m looking for a small bedroom practice amp and found this video. I know you’ve been critical to Fender Mustang GT-40, but what about the LT-25? How does the Code 25 compare to a LT-25? Right now I got a Blackstar id:core 20, but it sounds like crap when played through headphones (which I do quit a lot) and I’m thinking of changing it out for something else. Could this be the upgrade I’m looking for?

Great playing as usual, but not a very pleasant sounding amp imho. Overly compressed on the overdrives, and brittle on the cleans.
@PayneMaximus6 жыл бұрын
It pumps and grinds like a Marshall's supposed to do. I think I might give this one a shot to have in case I need to take an amp with me, because my big Marshall is heavy.

how does it compare to the mustang for a bassman or super reverb sound? also if you use the fender patch and use class a preamp it might sound blues jry cuz i think they use el84 tubes like vox

There is such a love hate relationship with the code amps. I have the code 50. I'm fascinated by finding good tones on it. By far my favorite setting is dsl clean really deep and full sound.

carlos casabianca I’ve been thinking about buying a code amp and I wanted to ask if you think code 50 is unnecessary loud for kind of basic home practicing amp and I should consider code 25

I have a 50 most of the time I use headphones because in in an apartment. One thing I did do is since I have a bunch of pedals. I took all the amp styles make them clean, then pock the power section you should experiment until you find the one that sounds good. This is the trick of the code slot of the presets sound. Very shrilly. Its definatly an amp that you need to play with. I liked the dsl setting so much I ended up buying a 25 amp dsl head
