For centuries, the “Well of Hell” has been a mystery for many locals in Yemen. Folklore says the giant hole in the Al-Mahra desert is a place where demons live. But no one has ever explored the hole in depth to learn about this little-understood natural wonder. On September 15, 2021, a group of cavers decided to reach the bottom of the hole, where they found snakes, dead animals and cave pearls formed by dripping water.

This looks like a natural sinkhole, caused by a collapse of the ceiling of an underground river cavern many many years ago. You can find similar formations in the Yucatan area of Mexico. I'm sure if they do some ground-radar analysis they may find an underground cave or cave river system...

The drone footage made it look like a big dark abyss that you can’t see the bottom off but in the videos at the bottom there was plenty of light to see. I’m surprised no one could make out what was done there by looking over the edge.
@jonathantan2469
@jonathantan2469 3 жыл бұрын
It's because the outside where you're in is quite bright, so your eyes adjust to the brightness. While you can see what's in the bright side, you can't easily see what is in the dark area. This effect is even more pronounced for video & photo cameras, as they have a lower lighting range than the human eye.

Basically its the above but also dark objects in a bright environment can look really bright in a dark environment. For example the moon looks bright in the night sky but its really the color of coal. It just looks that bright bc the night sky is black.

When light enters but is unable to escape, that place looks dark. In holes like these where light strikes the ground deep down but is reflected back only on the walls of the well inside. So from outside, it looks dark as the light is not reflected back to us. But when you go inside, the light that couldn't escape, is reflecting and illuminating the surfaces of the walls inside. So you can see the walls of the well when in, and you can see the light source too. Optics is a fascinating subject to be honest. This phenomena is the same for Black Holes. Its the same for small rat-holes. Whenever light is 'lost' in a hole, this happens.

This is fantastic and, despite it being an obviously very dangerous place, it is quite beautiful. Now the local people Know what is in the hole so they don't have to worry about bad spirits but still need to stay away from it so as to not fall in. I hope the cavers show the locals video footage as well as photos of the bottom if the "well" to reassure them. What a wonderful and exciting opportunity this was for the caving team.

And it also doesn't look that deep. But when you see the aerial shots it looks like it's a really deep hole.

The cave looks like an attempt to drill, like one of the movies of going to the center of the Earth, but it didn't get very far. I can't think much of what naturally could have made it. Then there is the idea of water could have done it, but even that is sketchy.
