I have been busy helping make the set for the West Jordan Youth Theater. It was a lot of work. I wanted to make a giant version of the hand that I used to make with my students. Science Toy Maker has a video that shows how to make the small version.

What are the dimensions of the hand?

I cut the hand and 4 fingers out of a 4x8 sheet of plywood. The thumb was from another sheet.

I started by tracing my hand on a regular piece of paper. Then I folded where I thought the joints should be until it made the fist shape that I liked. I then enlarged this onto a piece of foam core and doubled it in size. I used straws and other simple things to test how it would work. After that I used the original paper one and used a projector to enlarge it onto the sheet of plywood. I cut out the shape of the hand and then cut off each joint and reattached it as I went. All of my dimensions were based off of my enlarged copy of my own hand. Use a small prototype to see what work. Don't forget the joint that goes across your palm, or you wont be able to make a fist. If you want more instructions on how to make hands try sciencetoymaker.

Can I know the budget?

As a small community youth theater the budget is very small. For each play I tried to stay under $800 for materials. I was able to get small discounts or even donations from Lowes and Home Depot. I always try to reuse as much as possible and just repaint things. After helping for 4 years It has become better each time. The theater website is www.wjyouththeatre.com I helped with Tarzan, Willy Wonka, Beauty and the Beast, Into the Woods, Mary Poppins, High School Musical, Fiddler on the Roof, and Peter Pan. I have also helped with 2 plays at the Alpine Community Theater. I was a helper for Beauty and the Beast, and I was then put in charge of the set for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. Alpine gave me a $2500 budget which is how I was able to afford to make the giant 8'X10' Sphinx out of fiberglass. I just uploaded a video showing how we made it.
