I think if you compare FIF to a lot of "similar" bands from the period (Supertones, the W's) they are a very different breed. They're definitely ska, but they brought in a lot of other influences and you can listen to them become more and more their own style as their albums progress. They even mention people not liking that they mix punk with ska in Cool Enough for You.
