The zuma and gupta saga always infuriates me. It shows how the legal system and loyal south africans tried time and again to protect the country, but corruption and greedy politicians hamstrung every effort. The Scorpions had flaws, but between them and the Public Protector we at least had SOMETHING to have faith in for a while. No longer Oh, and a shout out to our media at the time. They fought, exposed and investigated a lot of this nonsense so well. To no avail, but they did their duty.

A very good summation. It’s worth noting that the current president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa , has been sitting within and influencing all ANC senior decision making bodies since 1991. The ANC has to date presided over at least $75 billion of corrupt gains (from taxpayers money) for its cadres and business associates. ‘State capture’ goes way beyond Jacob Zuma and corruption is still entrenched across all levels of government. Most of the ill-gotten gains now sit in Dubai and other offshore centers.

The scary thing (as a South African) is that there is no reason any country cannot be “captured”. I am a citizen of 2 other “ first world countries “ and there is no reason that those countries cannot also be captured ( in fact I would suggest that many already are). At least South Africans took action in the election … None of us expect any “ criminal “ actions but we at least have learnt NEVER to trust a Government again. The economy and Rand have rebounded … things are not as they should be but they are better. Problem in the first world is that people still believe their governments are there to serve them … they are not … the pain is still to come.

Not many people know the implications of how Zuma's administrations affected our country for a decade after he left office, and even right now, we are still suffering from those corrupt decisions. As much as I would like to believe that the Gupta’s and Zuma were the problem (and now they are gone), it’s not true. Unfortunately, it is the South African people who are the problem. At a fundamental level, a large portion of the South African population simply don’t care about the damage that is being done. If they did care they would vote for ethical political parties and politicians (they do exist). But they don’t. They complain about the issues, bemoan the crime and electricity problems, protest the corruption that takes place etc. But when the population as a whole has an opportunity to change the direction of the country at the ballot box, they show their true colours and side with ineptitude, corrupt politicians, and lawlessness. Zuma and the Gupta’s are the symptom, but the South African people are the ultimate cause of their own problems. Just like an alcoholic can only get sober when they recognise their addiction, South Africa will only improve when the people start to take accountability for their own shortcomings individually and start to make decisions that are actually in the best long term interests of themselves, their families, and their communities. Until the majority of people of South Africa start to live in a civic and productive way, this mess will continue. I truly hope that this can happen in my lifetime, but the odds aren’t good.

Hi Simon, you rightly pointed out that Zuma failed the job seeking people of SA. However, during his time in office there were scandals in the education system. School books being dumped in rivers and not delivered to schools. Local schools, in my area, sat 6 months of the school year with no books to work with. So in my opinion, Zuma has failed those kids even MORE! Then again one needs to bare in mind. Ramaphosa was second in line to Zuma. So he knew exactly what was going on and should be charged as well for state capture. The ANC is rotten to its core. Only if they the EFF and the MK disapaer form SA politics we have a future in this country.
