It might just be a small cluster of INTP's who do it, but there's also "the stare" where you just completely zone out and barely notice that you've been blanky staring ahead of you whilst you process new things. It's really annoying when people then feel the need to snap you out of that!

If you're an INTP, you'll find that you can grow a lot as a person by practicing extroverted traits. The chameleon face is exactly how I communicate with large groups. I can come off as extremely confident and self assured, I can also be cold and machine-like, even goofy and neurotic. It just depends on the situation and my mood. The INTP traits do show up though. I was once called a black hole by a friend in class. This is because INTPs have a bad tendency to ignore things that are outside their sphere of interest. This unawareness of our surroundings means that we don't really notice when our friend is talking to another friend, if we're excited we'll hijack the entire conversation. And people will let you most the time. I very much follow rules of engagement with most my relationships. Unfortunately, this does make genuine connection difficult for us. Our minds are more vast than an ocean and few people can even stare into it's depths. Even though we're attentive to the people we care about, our difficulties understanding our own emotions makes us ill-equipped to understanding the thought process of those who act with both thought and emotion in tune. Our attentiveness can also backfire when we notice pathological behavior in people. Because of this, we feel the need to point out the behavior if it becomes a problem. Unfortunately, when we do this, it's a weaponization of words. INTPs aren't going to waste their time explaining it in a nice and sugar coated way. I can't tell you how many times I've inadvertently made someone insecure with a single sentence. It's not intentional though. We do have feelings, but the feelings are more observed than experienced for us. We bask in the sight of our friends' smiling faces. We enjoy the wamrth of our mother's concern. We relish in the banter with our lovers. We assume since the emotions we observe are so strong, that it must be obvious to the one's around us that it's there. In reality we appear distant and cold to those closest to us. On the inside though, we do everything in our power not to express the whirlwind of emotions that can sometimes overwhelm us. We appear to suck in the warmth, but we struggle to radiate it. By the way, I was never offended by the black hole comment. Flattered actually. It's nice when someone understands you.

Ok, admittedly, I didn't read you full post. But just wrt the part pf taking on a chameleon role: that is really dangerous to you psyke if you are doing that constantly... You will start to feel sad and depressed. I admit that being a chameleon at times can be beneficiary, but not every time you interact with people...
@SpockTheExtreme5 жыл бұрын
aniokay Actually, thank you for saying that. I’m an INTP and I do a bit of the chameleon thing. I try to connect with people in a way that seems fitting. For someone that is fairly new, I’ll take a guess on how to interact with them, which may actually be more random and eccentric than an actual guess. So I end up interacting with different people differently. I think I overthink trying to connect with people, and feel like I have to have most of it planned out. I’ve been happiest when I feel completely loved and accepted, and I can live in the moment instead of planning my conversations. Those times in my life are rare. Not knowing how exactly to interact with people and the outcome leads to this kind of overthinking and planning. Add on to that a relationship where I had to walk on eggshells with my words, and I am back into overthinking. I am healing and constantly working on myself, learning better social skills. I am trying to rediscover the real me and find people that are ok with that. I feel like people wouldn’t like the smarter, nerdier Josh, and I try to dumb that down to connect with people. I’m letting go of that a bit. I do struggle with depression and loneliness, and this may be part of the reason why. Thank you, again.

Looking at the cognitive functions of ISFPs you may think that they are the most different type from INTPs, maybe this "polarity" in their functions results in some similarities between the two types? I have watched quite a few "understand an INTP" videos by non-INTPs lately (KZbin algorithm gods?) but yours is the first one I've ever seen through lens of facial expressions... and to be honest I think you're on to something, or at least I would never bet against you in poker without grabbing my temples and screaming "Get out of my head!!!" for a few minutes first. = p *I'm speaking from what I've personally observed, it may not be true with all. Over-generalizing to the point of inaccuracy is a problem I've seen in nearly all of these videos.* By the way one trend I've noticed in these videos is it's like we're revered for johny-on-the-spot confident snap mid-conversation conclusions. I don't know about all INTPs but from my experience, and especially younger ones, we can spout some BS. I also have two siblings, plus my dad, that are INTPs (conversations in the car or around the dinner table are great). So speaking as one, and as one who has to deal with more than one, unless your INTP is well disciplined, the ideas coming out are often more like clay mock-ups, like prototypes, presented in order to find defects, fix, and improve. TBH wild-ass assumptions can come out sounding just as confident as not... we can spout garbage with the idea we'll fix it along the way. *(Reminder of earlier disclaimer.)* It's not obvious to others what we're doing, and not obvious to INTPs that nobody else talks like that, so you'll see an INTP getting into trouble if they're never asking questions, and especially if nobody openly contests their claims. *(I just realized I'm stating all of my observations as though they're concrete facts. This was not done intentionally to prove a point but, true to form, is an example of exact behavior I spent all of this space trying to describe up till now.)* With your ability to read facial demeanors that wouldn't be an issue, but thesaurus.com should link the terms gullable and INTP, so when someone says, "wow that's great," but thinks an INTP's claim is BS, they can fulfill that little prophecy by politely ignoring the inconsistencies.. Ok, that was my little present for you, I hope it there's some value to it... now, may I ask where did you get that trait? Is it a function of your personality type? If so that would mean a whole sector of the population does that, but I've only ever heard of one person who can look at a picture and tell you volumes about the person's personality, and I believe that was in a latter chapter of Malcolm Gladwell's book 'Blink'* under, I think, "mind reading" or something like that. *(If you haven't read that book, go to the bookstore and read that chapter, you'll absolutely love it.)* If you're different, was there a heavy environmental factor in play? Like you had a proclivity, but then you were also partially deaf, or didn't speak the language, or were raised by gypsies, or wolves, or mentalists. I must know. If you explain it in another video, or could link to another video or article explaining it, just point the way and I would be eternally grateful.

So as an INTP, I notice that many of the characteristics we have are almost indistinguishable from what was referred to - until quite recently when the DSM issued its latest revision - from someone who has Asperger's (or "high-functioning autism" as it is now called). It is almost as if a personality type that is natural for us has become a disorder. I am sure there may be some subtle differences, but so far I haven't found any. Erik, I find your work astoundingly on point and I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Other INTPs - what do you think?
@ErikThor6 жыл бұрын
Carol, yes, INXXs are prone to autism, but there are other important factors necessary, such as the inability to process and manage your attention and to process sensory stimulation appropriately. Most healthy INTPs can access and use Sensing to a reasonable degree but it is when they feel completely unable to do so or when it starts causing them major challenges that it begins to be worth considering a diagnosis. A person with autism will have such difficulties that they struggle to have many normal elements of life, like touch, , handling busy school environments, dealing with normal life changes, being in unfamiliar environments. I think we may need to also look at enneagram combinations and development variations within an INXX type. Perhaps introverted intuition paired with Self Protective instinct.
@carolschiffler62716 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik, This is quite useful information. I do see a subtle difference in the realm of sensory perception. While overwhelming environments are unpleasant to my INTP self, I can handle them if I have to, (although I'd much prefer not). I have not looked into the enneagram very much, and I will have to take off down that rabbit hole now because it is just what INTP's do :-). I continue to find your videos very enlightening and your observations very astute. There are many people who do videos on this subject, but you have a depth that they seem to lack. Thank you so much for your response.

Indeed I have made that same observation myself. But it's more of an outward appearance than anything else. There are certainly major differences in the how and why. Now I'm not a medical professional so I don't feel like it's my place to talk about these differences (there's enough information to be found on the internet anyway), and I wouldn't wish to offend anyone with autism by claiming that I knew exactly what it is that goes on in their minds. And Erik already did a fine job highlighting some of these differences.

So many people say that INTP's show no emotions at all, but when I am happy or amused, it shows a whole lot. If I'm showing any other emotions, something is likely very wrong, but it takes almost nothing to make me smile when I'm happy. Like, I usually smile a lot when people are making announcements (and no one else is smiling - because there isn't actually a reason to, they didn't say anything funny - so I'm just looking like a complete weirdo), just because I am receiving information. I will start smiling when people are talking, *just because I'm being told things*. I get so exited over knowing something new, no matter how insignificant it actually is.

I'd seen results of 2 studies done last year where the testers tried to see if there were strong correlations btwn MBTI & RHETI types. And--out of 50,000+ participants in each case--approx 56% were, indeed, INTP. The INTP 5 & ESFJ 2's were, interestingly enough, the only two fairly strong correlations conclusively found in both studies. (~89% of all the 5's were INTP, INTJ, or ISTP.)

This video kind of ties into one of the big issues I have to deal with as an INTP... I’m a terrible multitasker. Example: I’ll be watching a show with my wife (INFJ) and she will start talking. Well, I’m already focused elsewhere. It takes me a second or to to register that “oh, she’s talking” and redirect my attention. By that time, it’s too late and I’ve missed half of her opening sentence. It drives her insane and she things im ignoring her or being rude. In reality, my brain really does need that clear break to shift attention. Anyone else deal with this? I’d love to see a video about this, why it happens, and how others see it.
