Nice one Dave. It’s a shame when you think about it as most wouldn’t have had the chance to race (or track, for the track day peps) the real RS250 from the 90’s. Same engine displacement, just more than 3 times the amount of power (old vs new). Progress? Hmmm... I have very found memories of pit bays firing up the old two-strokes in the morning on race days... just that intoxicating smell and sound as they all warmed up before being let out to do what they were designed to do. I guess this 4 stroke has similar intentions, just not really comparable... 👍😎🇦🇺

I'm actually surprised Aprillia went with that naming convention especially in that displacement. Having said that maybe just justified it because atleast they manufactured this 4stroke engine vs the old tweeked Suzuki RGV engine back in the day. But you're right, I really miss that 2stroke smell. Everytime i smell one now i remember my mornings in early 90s going down stairs to start my RGV250N going back to brush my teeth while it warmed up cackling and coughing, then off to work having just entered the work force, eagerly awaiting watching Doohan in the GP500s the coming weekend. Seems like yesterday. I wish I never sold that bike in hindsight , it's still more flickable fun to ride of any bike I've owned including than my 2019 Fireblade I have today...

@@Timetofly8888 Nice! I actually started out my road racing journey in the Australian 250 cc production class. I had 2 RGV’s that I raced. Still have one in storage (with everything drained) and it hasn’t even been started in over 20 years.

Does the new version come with a suzuki engine as well?

The new SP version is a single cylinder 4 stroke with 30bhp. Aimed at small bike markets like Asia and Indonesia it will do well. For purists it is the same controversy as the R7. Use a different name as the previous iteration was iconic.

@@catalystreactionsbw it's shocking to think that the modern day equivalents of these bikes are nowhere near where the old versions were. I remember my old 1987 Yamaha TZR 125 with fully derestricted operational power valve (UK versions were pegged closed) would easily do 100mph and was a fantastic bike. I did 65000 miles on that. I had port matched and gave a mild porting with different squish band on the head. The TZR 250 not quite as good because it kept seizing (once at 70mph) so I got rid for a new R6 in 2000. But anyway, it's sad that there doesn't seem to have been any power progress in smaller capacity bikes. I think they could have made two strokes more efficient and environmentally friendly.

@@catalystreactionsbw i think even the rs125 with a rotax 122 will be faster than the 4 stroke 250 and should be might lighter too
